I totally agree. 2001:Space Odyssey has to be Kubrick's masterpiece, in my opinion.

Definitely! I would love a Criterion release just for the sake of a new transfer (the current one is very good, but still). 2001 is one of those films that is perfect in every way. Each segment has inspired unbelievable amounts writing and critical analysis, so to add mine would be pretty superfluous. In short, I've read a couple books on the film and Stanley Kubrick and still find there are still riches to be unearthed from the film.

I think Tabu and Post Tenebras Lux alone are enough to make 2012 a stellar year, but there were many great films, so much so that my 2013 list is full of belatedly released 2012 films.

Once they're off the moon and HAL shows up, we're in Kubrick territory, and no more Strauss till the end. Can't say as much about the first half, though. And no, nobody could figure out the ending (or the lightshow) back then, either.

I've got the Criterion DVD, and the BD - not the trilogy, not fond of the others. For me, Starship Troopers is the real sequel to Robocop. (And the Startship sequels are also dead to me.)
I used to say that Robocop was the "real" Judge Dredd movie, until I found out, in the appropriate thread, that...Ed Neumeier had tried and failed to get the comic movie rights from DC and had to go make up his own.
And still better at protecting the innocent and upholding the Law than Sly Stallone or Karl Urban.

My favorite 2012 film, by far, was The Grey.

My favorite 2013 movie is Malick's To the Wonder. My second favorite 2013 movie is Oblivion. Those are the only two new movies that I've seen so far this year, so it was rather easy to compile this list.
We must have very similar taste in films. The Grey was by far my favorite of 2012, and To The Wonder and Oblivion are #1 and #2 for 2013 for me as well

The best part was that it was my first time seeing it. Truly magical. I had planned on watching it for a while, but then they announced the screening months in advance and I just held off a little longer.

I've been dying to see PTL. It looks as though I'll have to wait until the UK BD release, unless my arthouse announces it for their summer line up.

After watching three-and-a-half hockey games Tues night I decided I needed a little more time on the couch before heading to bed so I popped in The Man Who Knew Too Much.

It wasn't great but it was surprisingly solid throuhout. I say surprisingly because I'm not a huge fan of early (pre-Rebecca) Hitchcock. Even Foreign Correspondent (my previous fave from that period in his career) tended to lurch about a bit.

This was pretty tight though. And it looked great. Not Shadow of a Doubt great but some of the exteriors showed definite signs of things to come. And to be fair, he didn't exactly have Hollywoody budgets to work with yet.

Overall I was very pleasantly surprised. A very nice way to kill an hour and one I'll be going back to at some point.

Can't wait to dig into Band of Outsiders this weekend. It's been a while since I've seen it. I may go with a Godard themed weekend and re-visit Pierrot and Weekend, too.

The Criterion Blu-ray of The Man Who Knew Too Much rocks my face. I love the gunfight at the end. I also love how the movie accentuates the fear of heights that Hitchcock's later films so brilliantly convey.

I watched the first half of Notorious last night, and will be finishing it up after work. I had not seen that movie in ages, so it's great to revisit on Blu-ray. Was there ever a better-looking actress than Ingrid Bergman in Notorious? Wow.

Thanks, but it isn't in my hands yet. I've been involved in too many snafus over the years to take it for granted that all is well, until I actually have it.

Congrats on Mafioso!

EDIT: Now I can rest easier. My copy arrived in the mail today ... complete with a blue sticker.

Another 20% coupon from Barnes & Noble was in my inbox. They're really pushing this whole Mother's Day thing.

I already have a gift for Mom when I visit this weekend, so I'll use this coupon for the Blu-ray of Band of Outsiders.

I watched about 3/4 of Solaris last night with the commentary on. Very insightful and they pointed out a lot of small things I'd never noticed with the imagery before. I was able to focus on the small things going on in the film since the subtitles were shut off and I didn't have to spend time focusing on the dialogue. I tried watching this commentary on the DVD many years ago found it mundane and too academic for my tastes...maybe I've changed ???

The one with this particular email was for in-store only. I reserved a copy of Band of Outsiders at the store down the street, and will pick it up later.
