Here's what I want for tomorrow's announcements...
Le Samouraļ The Vanishing Tess L'Avventura La Notte L'Eclisse I know that this is not Burger King, and I cannot have it my way. I'll keep harping on them until Le Samouraļ is upgraded, though. |

Any Thoughts on what classic Hollywood film Criterion might release next? You always get at least one every couple of months, On The Waterfront, Swell of Sweet Success, 12 Angry Men etc. Haven't heard any rumors or hints about one in awhile.

Billy Wilder's Stalag 17 or Witness for the Prosecution would be fun Criterions.

One of my most wanted titles for sure. I would think Paramount would release this on their own especially with its 60th anniversary this year and all but I would certainly welcome it to the criterion collection. Ever since I saw a fan made Out of the Past cover I have been wanting this title to have an awesome criterion release. I think it would be a great addition, not only because I want it but also because it is a pivotal noir. Some other great titles I think would also be The Lady Eve, Murder My Sweet, Gilda, Gaslight, Mildred Pierce...well I could go on and on so I will stop there. |

There is a thread in the Movies forum where everyone is listing their Top 25 Favorite Movies for a collaborative ranking after a deadline.
I made good use of my lunch break and compiled my Top 25 off the top of my head. The Criterion Collection (titles in bold font) is well represented, of course. 1. Le Samouraļ 2. Dr. No 3. Army of Shadows 4. Le Cercle Rouge 5. Casino Royale (2006) 6. North by Northwest 7. King Kong (1933) 8. Stand By Me 9. Escape from Alcatraz 10. The Shawshank Redemption 11. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 12. Paris, Texas 13. The Vanishing 14. Badlands 15. Blade Runner 16. The Night of the Hunter 17. Pulp Fiction 18. Jaws 19. Raiders of the Lost Ark 20. The Birds 21. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 22. Touchez Pas Au Grisbi 23. Alien 24. Casablanca 25. Seven Samurai I had to flip a coin between Seven Samurai and The Wages of Fear for the 25th spot. Ouch. |

I finally watched Kieslowski's THREE COLORS trilogy for the first time over the past couple of nights and was really impressed. The three individually and together are wonderful character studies and philosophical exercises, yet each has an engaging plot that is masterfully interlocked with the other two films. I loved BLUE right away for both its use of color and the depth of emotional character development from beginning to end. I enjoyed WHITE quite a bit as a darkly comic change of pace and peek into early 1990s Polish life as they moved from a former iron curtain country into the European mainstream, although I agree with most people that it's not quite up to the other two of the trilogy. When RED began, it was interesting but seemed far more random and experimental as it slowly set up the main characters, and I was wondering why so many people preferred it out of the three. However about a third of the way into it I was hooked on the way its characters and plot began to show the film's deeply philosophical implications and the way the various separate plot threads quickly began to overlap. The ending was a very effective way to tie the three films together, and made me immediately want to get into all of Criterion's bonus features (although I've only gotten through a few of them so far).
