Really, the only reason it goes for that much money right now is because of the Criterion logo on the cover.
I think the film has something to do with it too. Sure, the price is driven primarily by the C on the cover but I think newcomers will always be a little more eager to add The Third Man to their collections than say The Man Who Fell to Earth.

It's an imperfect comparison but all sold out Twilight Time titles will be equally rare but the Fright Nights and Christines will generate higher prices because they have a more passionate fanbase.

(until they get released somewhere else and the bottom drops out but that's where the imperfect part comes in)

Someone can probably correct me or verify that..
I may have misread an article on the main site of this site as far as which ones went OOP.

I feel like, if it didn't have that Criterion logo, almost everyone would buy the already-in-print copy of the film going for about $15 these days. I've seen many people who have never even seen the film put off that copy because they want the Criterion one (me included )... so, I'd say since it's the only OOP film already released by another label, I wouldn't expect the film itself to be the entire reason.

That is the amazing part that it also has a in print release from Studio Canal, and to loosely quote the reviewer on this site who said if you never saw the Criterion disc you would be think the Studio Canal disc was stunning. So yeah I too think it has a little more to do with the C but I can understand the Criterion love and wanting that version.

Watching Heaven's Gate right now....I am about 2 hours in and had to take a few minute break. I don't know how favorable this one will be with me but it is still to premature to make any assumptions so back to it I go.

I must admit that I was late to the game in terms of the Criterion Collection. I didn't buy my very first Criterion BD until the autumn of 2011. I missed out on the whole early releases of Criterion's BDs (such as "The Third Man" and "The Man Who Fell to Earth") but was fortunate enough to purchase the latter film on DVD back in November 2009, having no idea that it was about to go OOP a 6-7 months after I bought it. I was still collecting DVDs up until the summer of 2011 when I switched to BD. My very first big blu-ray purchase was the BD collection of Star Trek: The Original Series for $180.99! (now selling for $112).

In any case, hindsight is 20/20 as they say and had I known, along with many other people, I would have jumped at the opportunity in buying "The Third Man" BD at a 50%-off sale at B&N. Still, I have managed to buy a lot of OOP films either by chance or quickly before they started skyrocketing in price.

My Criterion OOP list:

The Man Who Fell to Earth (DVD) (OOP): Bought it for $13 at B&N, sale
The Milky Way (DVD) (OOP): Bought it for $13 at B&N, sale
Pierrot le Fou (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $20 at Amazon, sale
Playtime (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $16 at B&N, sale
Trafic (DVD) (OOP): Bought it for $22 at 3rd party music store, non-sale
Army of Shadows (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $16 at B&N, sale
Chungking Express (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $16 at B&N, sale
Mafioso (DVD) (OOP): Bought it for $25 at DVDEmpire.com, non-sale
Léon Morin, Priest (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $20 at Amazon, sale
Last Year at Marienbad (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $32 at B&N, non-sale
Le Cercle Rouge (BD) (OOP): Bought it for $36 at B&N, non-sale

I just went to Amazon to look at Léon Morin, Priest and here is the following message that's listed:

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

I should be getting it on Thursday and see what they mean exactly.

I wonder if they've been receiving copies with the same issues as others have from other sellers (different looking packaging, etc.)

As long as it's not some bootleg version then I'm fine. It's from Amazon so the chances of that happening are pretty much zero. I should be getting mine in the mail tomorrow.

Oh, I agree. I don't think there's any 'feel like' about it. The price premium between the Criterion The Third Man and the Studio Canal The Third Man is driven almost entirely by the whacky C on the cover. Some of that premium is driven by preceived PQ/AQ differences or by different supplements but not much. People might be willing to pay tens of extras dollars because the Criterion release is said to be superior but the people paying hundreds of extra dollars are doing so because it's the Criterion release.

We agree there.

What I was driving at earlier is more a comparison between the prices paid for The Third Man and the prices paid for The Man Who Fell to Earth. One could argue that premium is due primarily to the fact that The Third Man went OOP earlier. I don't know if I agree with that. I think that particular difference in price is driven more by the fact that The Third Man is sought by more people and those people desire it more passionately.

IOW, if The Third Man and The Man Who Fell to Earth went OOP on the same day and there were the exact same number of copies in circulation I believe we would still see the kind of prices differences we see now.

But who really knows?

But like you also said - it is due to the perceived difference between the pq on the different releases. The pq on the UK release of The Man Who Fell To Earth is considered on par or of better quality then the Criterion.

That sounds about right. When comparing just those two, I can also see The Third Man being the more desirable.

It would be interesting to see what the OOP film's pricing will be like over a year from now when availability of the rest of the OOP ones will be more of an issue. Perhaps once one of the other films becomes more rare, it will rise to that position of most-sought-after.

Is the August announcement today, or are they going to do that thing where they make us wait over the weekend again?

Where are you getting this? I see nothing on Facebook or their site. Unless you're joking about it.
