Yea, we don't want any Indian films. They can't be any good...you know, because they're Indian.

I don't mind people being excited and asking for a title. But I agree with some of the posters here - there is a line between excitement, and being rude and shitting all over the other titles that Criterion does excellent work on.
It really doesn't, though. People either buy the titles they want when they come out, or they wait for 50% off sales. It doesn't matter when a movie comes out if people are going to wait for sales. And it's not like they are heavily discounted on release day like blockbuster studio films.

But that wasn't even the point of my original post.

The Indian movies don't surprise me. I remember listening to a past episode of the Criterion Cast podcast where Criterion restoring movies of Satyajit Ray was discussed.

People only have so much disposable income. So dumping too much on the market at one time decreases the total number of impulse buys from the "buy the titles they want when they come out" crowd, and results in more "wait for sales" purchases (or "forgot that that Blu-ray ever came out" non-sales from the general non-OCD consumers these mainstream crossover titles also attract). EVERY studio follows this logic, no one is dumping all their big titles at once just so "people stop asking about them."

And beyond the actual sales of these popular titles, these big releases keep the name "Criterion" on the radar of mainstream crossover Blu-ray customers, and encourages some percentage of them to maybe see what else Criterion is up to at the time. These reminders to the mainstream customers that Criterion exists every 6 months or so are more valuable then one big "Wow Criterion is awesome for releasing these 10 titles I want!" moment followed by 3 years of nothing that catches their attention.

And really, people obsessing and harassing Criterion about certain titles does not hurt their business. I only wish they'd stop because I find it rude and lacking perspective, but it doesn't hurt Criterion and it doesn't hurt the Blu-ray market so I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Seconds and To Be or Not to Be both sound great to me.

WWII was an endless wellspring for awesome movies, and To Be or Not to Be looks to be another fun addition in this regard.

I do not know enough about the two Satyajit Ray films to be excited, but I have always heard great things about this director.

It looks to be a solid month so far.

Now, Criterion, stop standing around scratching your butts, and get to work on upgrading Le Samourai.

Where did anyone ever say anything about dumping titles all at once? They seem to release Anderson's films about a year apart, so IF they plan on releasing it, it will probably come in the fall.

Perhaps I misunderstood your initial statement. You said "if they'd just release it then all those people can finally shut it. Happened with Badlands... and after, I guess, will be Thief." I took that to mean "release all the titles people keeping obsessing over so they'll all shut up." Because releasing Life Aquatic won't shut up the Thief people, releasing Thief won't shut up the Eraserhead people, won't shut up the Scanners people, etc.

My point was there's ALWAYS going to be some mainstream title that people keep harping and obsessing over because it is in Criterion's best business interest to release them with a fair degree of separation, and always have something big like that on the horizon to keep said obsessive people's attention.

If this does not match the sentiment you were trying to express, then I apologize. In such case, I retract my statements insomuch as they relate to your post, but keep all other aspects insomuch as they apply to every poster here and on Facebook that throws a pity party every 15th of the month when [insert popular title] is not yet announced.

I have yet to see any of Ray's films, but I've heard nothing but exquisite stuff about them. I'm sure his work will be a great addition.

Just sayin'.

I'm close friends with an Indian family around here, and I've watched a few Bollywood films over the years. The movies that I've seen are quite awesome, with incredibly high-budget special effects and dance sequences. Not my normal cup of tea, but they're great entertainment. I had the music from the 2005 film, Bunty Aur Babli, going through my head for a week.

So because the Indian version of Superman was terrible, that means all Indian films are bad?

So it was Satyajit Ray in particular you had a problem with then?

Come on, seriously? When you make a comment such as yours, don't you kind of expect that from an online chat room...especially when you bash films of another country and you can't even use English correctly!?
