Couldn't wait for a decent sale and bought myself 'Badlands'. In the end, I'd have to say its my favorite Terrance Malick film.

Maybe I'm a sucker for road trips, but the movie works really well. I of course can't go into too much without spoilers, but the first 15 minutes convey a vastly different film than what we end up with.

Great film, too, with the wonderful Michel Piccoli.
That is certainly true. But I sure wouldn't mind if we'd see an upgrade soon.

So...I have a huge backlog of Criterion titles that I have either not completed or never started. Can you please help me pick the next five I should target?

Brazil
Army of Shadows
Battle of Algiers
39 Steps
Last Year at Marienbad
Samurai Trilogy films 2 & 3
Pierrot Le Fou
The Man Who Fell to The Earth
Rules of the Game
Lady Vanishes
Howard's End
Phantom Carriage
Cronos
Last Emperor
Walkabout
Red Desert

Thanks in advance.

The Man Who Fell to The Earth-OOP

These I would try and obtain while you can find them for as cheap as you can...Brazil...just because it's good ol' wacky fun and I'll throw Gilliam at anyone who will accept him.

No problem. . So I think consensus says three of the films should be

Brazil
Walkabout
Howard's End

Possibly Army of Shadows.

Trying to watch a lot of the backlog before any summer sales happen and I'm with a even bigger backlog.

Remember that The Last Emperor won an Oscar for Best Picture, and it deserved to. It is a superior film.

I can't comment on all of them, as I haven't seen a lot of them, but of the ones I have seen, The Lady Vanishes is my pick of the bunch.

Watching a broadcast of Winchester '73 today made me think; we really need more Anthony Mann westerns on Criterion.

Excellent movie. A few other notable Anthony Mann westerns: The Naked Spur, Man from Laramie & Man of the West.

I have all of these except Last Emperor, Howard's End and the Samurai movies.

My five picks would be:

Red Desert
Last Year at Marienbad
Pierrot Le Fou
Army of Shadows
Battle of Algiers

Probably in that order. Although, it has to be said that there isn't a lot of popcorn in that list.

Knocked another two titles off my list today.

Everlasting Moments might be one of the most overlooked "modern" releases from Criterion. While it definitely lacks focus at certain points, I couldn't help but be completely mesmerized the entire time. I don't think it needed to be 2+ hours, especially since there were a few pieces that got introduced and rarely brought up again, but at the same time, I didn't feel that its run time damaged the film in the slightest.

La Jetée is a wonderful example of how well brevity can work. I feel that at anything longer than its brief half hour, the effect of the film would be lost. You get so invested and engrossed in such a short amount of time that the ending delivers a harder gut-punch than one might expect. I'm already compelled to return to this already.
