Another great opening shot, in a film I watched for the first time today, a really nice Kino release, Los Bastardos. A really good movie, and a terrific, really long opening shot that sets the tone for a movie about mayhem and the mundane against the backdrop of Mexican migrant labor in southern california.
Another awesome opening shot is from Touch of Evil.

To me, the most satisfying and re-watchable from that lot is Seven Samurai. It's a rousing old-skool Entertainer (with a capital E) with great character moments and spectacular action, and it's the most perfectly paced movie. People like Christopher Nolan and Peter Jackson should be made to re-watch this film to understand how to make epic sagas that are not whiny/boring.

Default iScottie Review: Medium Cool

It is the summer of 1968 in the city of Chicago, Illinois and the whole world is watching. As the city runs rife with turmoil, we meet two news reporters as they are covering a fatal car accident on one early morning. The accident appears to have just happened and the main focus of these two reporters is not on the safety of the victims, but on covering this "hot, new story". Before the opening credits roll, we are presented with the only dialogue exchange during this brief introduction, "Better call an ambulance". It was at this point that I knew that I would be seeing a film unlike any other - a film that calls into question the ethical and moral responsibilities of not only the new reporters, but every day citizens alike.

Haskell Wexler's political drama, Medium Cool, follows John Cassellis, a camera man facing a moral crisis about what is right and what is wrong to report as a news reporter. John tackles a wide range of topics, such as racism, but it takes its toll on him. Being a news reporter, especially during a time like this, can be very dangerous. There are many walks of life that the news reporters constantly come into contact with and it does not take much to get onto their bad sides. However, the most dangerous individuals are those that we are the closest with. It does not take much for an individual that we trust to turn on us in the blink of an eye, especially when it involves getting ahead in life.

It is very hard to go into Medium Cool without a general appreciation for politics and / or history. The film does an excellent job at conveying exactly what our country was facing during this very difficult and hectic time of 1968. As the country still mourned over President Kennedy's death several years previously, the country faced another assassination, that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the month of April. As if this was not bad enough, our country was also facing The Civil Rights Movement, The Vietnam War, and a new Presidential Election. With so much going on, it was very hard to pick a side or even make sense of the ensuing chaos.

The important thing to understand about this film is that while so much was going on, it was a time for new beginnings. With new presidential candidates running for office, for example, there was hope for a just and equal world in the upcoming years. As we saw in the years that did follow, we had a lot of advancements, equal rights for women, among other things, due to the Women's Rights Movement and other similar campaigns.

Haskell Wexler's Medium Cool is shot in a fictional, documentary-type style. While one side of the film shows how ruthless the media can be, the other side offers the viewer a sense of hope during such a dark and difficult time. With so much going on during this period, it is very impressive to see how our country pulled together and fought for their own opinions, beliefs, and rights. I personally believe that if somebody did not take a stand at this point, then a lot of the things that we currently have would not be as prominent or as significant as they are now.

America truly is wonderful.

Everyone talks about Seven Samurai being one of Kurosawa's best so I'm really intrigued. Cronos would be my introduction to Del Toro's early stuff. If... I love the premise of it after reading the summary. Ivan's Childhood I'd love to pick it up. Finally 120 Days of Sodomy intrigues me the most. I watched the Criterion preview and it peaked my curiosity to say the least. I've seen it on the featured display endcap at B&N even though it's been out for quite a while (probably trying to get rid of it hahah). I'm more intrigued to watch it just because of the controversy.

Right now my picks would be Seven Samurai and 120 Days... with If... coming a close third. I mean I'm really going to blow my load in the July sale. I may just pick up some just for the hell of it anyways.
I really suggest Ivan's Childhood, especially over Salo. The latter is a really tough blind buy.

Great advice. Salo may be the single worst blind buy you could ever make. It's a film that is impossible to enjoy, in fact, it probably wasnt meant to be, so I couldn't see why someone would "get in bed with it", especially at criterion prices.

HEY... I JUST NOW searched Last Year at Marienbad and it's in stock for shipping. Says special order 3-5 weeks but it's in stock for shipping. Just FYI. Limit 3 per customer, hopefully no reseller gets a hold of this info before those who actually want the movie to watch it.

Wanted to mention it here before I post it on the BN thread since this thread is full of people who will buy the movie for the movie, not just wholly to flip it.

Cronos doesn't seem to get much positive attention around here and seems to generally be ignored. I'm a fan of it though. Felt like I was watching an old Hammer Horror film and Federico Luppi gives a beautiful performance. He's amazing in The Devil's Backbone also so I can't wait until Criterion releases it soon.

All this talk about Chronos is really making me want to check it out. I need to see if it's available on Netflix for streaming.

Salo or The 120 Days of Sodom is definitely NOT blind buy material. I repeat: NOT blind buy material.

I would strongly suggest watching it before deciding to commit an outlay of cash for it.

Blind buying Salo would be far worse than blind buying Antichrist! And to say it's far worse than blind buying Antichrist is saying something! Antichrist is distburbing and unsettling but not to nearly the degree as Salo. You'd be to blind buy Salo.

Regardless of my personal take on it (see below) I can't see how it would be blind buy material for ANYONE.

Salo was disturbing to me. Sure the material is objectionable to many but it also made me extremely uncomfortable and disturbed me in a much deeper and harder to explain way. Not only would I never ever ever own it, even for free, I will never watch it again. Maybe to some it has replay value but I think it's fairly safe to say they'd be the 1%.

Just saying. lol

I'd say easily SEVEN SAMURAI as the first choice and CRONOS as the second. CRONOS (not to be confused with Ron Fricke's interesting but completely unrelated experimental documentary CHRONOS) is really amazing and very underrated. The others might well be worth seeing at least once or twice, but SEVEN SAMURAI and CRONOS are the richest, deepest, and most rewatchable of the list (with IVAN'S CHILDHOOD a close third).

From that list, my choices or my favorites are Seven Samurai & Salo.

Salo was a tough watch the first time I saw it (and the 2nd and 3rd, etc), but it's a great film. I truly love it.

Does B&N or Fry's usually have Criterion releases on their release date? I imagine its pretty hit or miss...

B&N has every Criterion on release date. Fry's seems to get newer titles a bit after release and availability in store is spotty.

I placed an order either yesterday or the day before and it got canceled by BN. Good luck, but most likely yours will get canceled too.

I think it depends on how you "enjoy" a film. I think there is a lot to enjoy about Salo, and that it is worth watching.

I blind bought Salo and am happy I own it. Heck, my wife even watched a lot of it out of curiosity, which is saying something

But yeah, you should know what you are getting into before you buy a film like Salo. If the subject matter doesn't put you off, it is a fascinating film.

To be honest, I despised Salo when I first saw it in the Spring of 2011. But it shook me very hard, made me reconsider my relationship with on screen violence and has burrowed into my head ever since.

I caved in and bought it last Summer. No, actually I traded in a duplicate batch of blurays I got during the B2G1 & 50%. But, it was mainly for the extras.
