I'd imagine Le Samourai would hit BR first among the CC Melvilles---- if CC is able to do them on Blu-ray.

Although, I certainly wouldn't mind Army of Shadows, Bob the Gambler, Red Circle or the gem Leon Morin.

Not BD but if anyone's interested Amazon seems to have made a pricing mistake on Eclipse 21: Oshima's Outlaw, the price right now is $37.49 and they have the msrp listed as $44.95 when it's really $69.95. I'm sure this won't last long so if you want it, now is the best time.

Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00393SFQG/ref=ox_ya_os_product

I was able to buy it for $36.49 earlier today.

I caught that mistake earlier today and pre-ordered a copy, too. Oh, yeah.

my local indie cinema is showing Ran until THursday. it opened last Friday (3/19) and i did NOT even know about it! =D

so if you live in Boston (or metro region) and you want to see a NEW 35mm remastered print:
http://www.coolidge.org/showtimes

i'm SO EXCITED. this will give me a GREAT reference point to see if the Studio Canal truly messed their transfer up or i'm just delusional =P

So I wanted to link him to a dvdbeaver review of one of the best releases to show him how much of a difference there actually is.
I think "The General" is much better than its restored DVD counterpart. "Sunrise", I don't have the Fox release but I would assume it was much better as well. But you know there is more to PQ involved. Hardware, distance, eyesight, etc.

Just got my replacement cases in the mail for The Third Man, The 400 Blows, and Last Year At Marienbad. Woot! The last shipment from my massive order of soon-to-be OOP DVDs also just showed up, with the Orphic Trilogy set and Alphaville.

Just preordered it. I was waiting for a B&N sale to pick up some eclipse sets but this is just as good.

I know others have given you some options, I say show him Buster Keaton The General, it's not Criterion but Kino. However it's from 1927, if he still say that no pre-2000 movies benefit to be put on Blu-ray, find a new friend

From Criterion's Twitter feed:

Anybody recognize the screenshot? RT @benlim: http://twitpic.com/1a8o5m - Screening the HD master of an upcoming release...

A clue for an upcoming release, maybe?

That still does indeed look like its from the Thin Red Line. Obviously part of the island subplot where future JC superstar Jim C hides out from the navy.

I'm deeply impressed with Criterion's BD of "Playtime", especially compared with the DVD from BFI in the UK.
Check the trusty DVDbeaver comparison.

Or a non-Criterion one - "North By Northwest" looks beautiful on blu. Would that all films would be transferred with such care.

Its not really worth it to try to convert someone who doesn't understand that even 16mm film sources receive a nice upgrade over DVD when put on Blu not too mention that 35mm and up material has more relative resolution than 1080p.

Not sure how many of you live near Long Beach, California. But Fingerprints Record Store on 2nd Street in Long Beach has a bunch of Pierott Le Fou. They have them for $32.99 w/Out of Print stickers on them. I guess they put out what remaining ones they had in stock out near the blu-ray/dvd section of the store. They had about 12 left when I was there yesterday.
