My copy of Salo 120 Days arrived in the mail today. Can't wait to watch it and let everyone know how it goes this week!

(also got Seven Samurai and Sweet Smell of Success as well)

I can't wait to hear your thoughts

Jeez I'm pretty mad! I just say down to revisit Umberto D. then the neighbors started blasting pop music (you can hear thumping). Fortunately the other members of my household are cool with this, so they're still watching it...I guess I'll be watching You, The Living on my laptop on the other side of the house....(sigh)

I actually love Salo! Definitely hard to find others willing to watch it with you haha, but I really like it. Very intelligent with a dark sense of humor (at times)

Don't eat a brownie while you're watching it though

I made good use of my lunch break and compiled my Top 25 off the top of my head. The Criterion Collection (titles in bold font) is well represented, of course.

1. Le Samouraï
2. Dr. No
3. Army of Shadows
4. Le Cercle Rouge
5. Casino Royale (2006)
6. North by Northwest
7. King Kong (1933)
8. Stand By Me
9. Escape from Alcatraz
10. The Shawshank Redemption
11. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
12. Paris, Texas
13. The Vanishing
14. Badlands
15. Blade Runner
16. The Night of the Hunter
17. Pulp Fiction
18. Jaws
19. Raiders of the Lost Ark
20. The Birds
21. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
22. Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
23. Alien
24. Casablanca
25. Seven Samurai

I had to flip a coin between Seven Samurai and The Wages of Fear for the 25th spot. Ouch.
I really like this list that you posted a couple of weeks ago. All excellent movies. I went back and revisited Stand by Me and Jaws, and plan to check out the original King Kong again sometime soon.

I'm not sure any of these films would be in my top 25, perhaps maybe Badlands or Jaws. Others that would be high on mine include Wizard of Oz, On the Waterfront, Knife in the Water, Murmur of the Heart, Amarcord, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Naked, Paths of Glory, Shop on Main Street, Harlan County, Graduate, Ben Hur, Robocop, Heaven's Gate, Mama Roma.

Still working on it. Would love to hear others on the forum throw out some of their very top picks (Criterion or otherwise).

On a non-Criterion related note, I'm wondering if you've seen Jaws 2? I've actually never seen it and am curious, looking forward to perhaps checking it out but am ambivalent due to the mixed reviews. I've seen the other two Jaws sequels and they were, um, yeah.

Sometimes there's a 2-3 hour window where they overlap

I'm having trouble deciding which release of Harakiri I should eventually get. The criterion release is the better package and generally has better picture quality (IMO) but I can't get past the amount of missing information on the Criterion release compared to MoC's release. It bothers me.

Would the 40% off Blu-ray, and 2 for 1 Blu-ray / DVD overlap? I wasn't able to use the 20% off coupon with the 40% off Blu-ray this past weekend, so wondering if two different promos can be used together.

Also just caught a gorgeous HD presentation of Magnificent Obsession on Xfinity Ondemand, presented by Movieplex. My first time seeing it, pretty good but not as good as Written on the Wind. Wonder if Magnificent Obsession will go to Blu soon, since there is an HD version floating out there?

Out of the blue, I happened to find myself thinking today - and I have no idea if anyone here would agree - that I'd love to see a Criterion release of Pink Floyd's The Wall. It seems the kind of film that would be right up their alley...or at least, one of their alleys (the alley where films like Head and Quadrophenia reside)...and I think it would be amazing to see a BD release from them. Perhaps with a 5.1 remix supervised by Roger Waters (in addition to the original audio, of course).

Just a thought.

I think that Pink Floyd- The Wall would make an outstanding addition to the collection. I had the privilege of seeing it during the first week of its original release at New York's Ziegfeld Theater in 70mm. Needless to say, that movie-watching experience left a deep and powerful impression.

I would buy this immediately. It will go well with my autographed The Wall vinyl album.

I have seen Jaws 2 a couple of times. The best thing about the movie is the outstanding tagline: "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water..." I've always loved that.

Jaws 2 does not hold a candle to the original film, but it is a fun little popcorn movie that shares a lot of the same cast from the original. The sequel also follows a similar plot line to the original, in that it starts out like Ibsen's play, An Enemy of the People, and closes out as an adventure/horror story. Basically, a bigger badder meaner great white shark starts terrorizing Amity, the deaths are dismissed as accidents by everyone but Chief Brody, people eventually come to their senses to realize the imminent danger of the shark, and Brody hunts the shark down. Chaos ensues, with a few priceless scenes, like Brody discovering a burnt body, the shark taking down a helicopter, and a rather gruesome finale that actually makes me feel sorry for the shark.

It's the best of the sequels, but it's still not the original Jaws.

Incidentally, and back on Criterion topics, I went back to the original thread and changed my vote from Badlands to The Thin Red Line. I tend to go back and forth between those two as my favorite Malick offering.

Cool, thanks, I'm going to check out the sequel. Badlands is my favorite Malick film, and then Days of Heaven.

Would it be blasphemous to say The New World is every bit as great as the rest of his work?

I neglected to acknowledge that your above list is quite good.

I am also reminded that, now that I'm caught up with my Blu-rays, I need to go back and revisit On the Waterfront by watching the 1.85:1 aspect ration version. (I simply watched Disc One the first go 'round.)

No, of course not! My admiration for that movie grows with each subsequent viewing, and the Blu-ray really knocked me off my feet when I watched it a few months back.

I have a difficult time ranking the Terrence Malick movies. To the Wonder would rank last on the list, but it's still the best film of 2013 so far.

Absolutely not. It's a stunning piece of work. Might even be better than Badlands.

It's definitely better than Badlands, and maybe better than Days of Heaven. I'd need to see it again to be sure. It's just too bad Malick's preferred cut isn't the cut on Blu.
