My local Best Buy has a decent Criterion selection. By which I mean they consistently have a dozen or more titles. Never a lot...but from what I gather, more than most Best Buys. Maybe they do it to compete with B&N, since there's a B&N pretty much next door to this particular Best Buy.

Quick question about the The Barnes and Noble 50% Criterion sale:

Is it 50% off the RRP?

I ask because Amazon have dropped the price of a number Criterion titles to $19.99 which I've been waiting until the July sales for. They also dropped The Three Colours Trilogy (Red white and blue) to $43.40, the B&N price is $79.99 which would make it $40.00 but Amazon's shipping is cheaper to Australia than B&N.

So I could get that a few of the other titles from Amazon that I wanted, then get the rest from B&N.

Unless, somehow, B&N work out cheaper than 50% off the RRP (stacking coupons or something?)

Thanks guys!

Ivan's Childhood was rough for me to get through, I had to give it two or three tries before I actually finished it. Interesting overall but not one I feel I need to watch again.

Seven Samurai though..I mean you've seen it. You know it's fantastic.

Just ordered Bicycle Thieves DVD from Best Buy online.

Now deciding between several Blu's to get from either BB or Amazon: Purple Noon, Naked, On the Waterfront, Last Temptation of Christ. We'll see how my bank account is doing in a few days!

Thanks, might get that one..

Nope. I bought a few titles from Barnes & Noble during this month's 40%...
The Leopard
Revanche
America Lost and Found: The BBS Story box set.

I had a $10 gift card that I used in conjunction with the 40% off for the America Lost and Found set, so all of that with my member discount got me the set for $61.
The timing just happened to be right for purchases of The Leopard and Revanche.

The July sale is going to be fun, but I do not regret spending $4 or $5 extra total for the above, because this frees up more money for me in July to pick and choose some other favorites.

More often than not, my decision to buy Blu-rays during any given week is dependent on timing and personal circumstances, as opposed to being dependent on sales. If I have more spending money set aside after a particular week than expected, I'll generally take advantage and buy a movie if the price is reasonable.

I watched Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast over the weekend and what a gorgeous film. I also wasn't expecting it to have a comedic element to it but the film can be quite funny. A very interesting use of lighting and the camera tricks were pretty amazing in their effortlessness.

I watched Breathless last night, and I did enjoy it as a standalone movie, as opposed to the number one complaint about it - "I don't want to have to read a film essay to have to understand the movie." The jump cuts seemed to work fine. The most interesting part, I thought, was the characters and trying to figure out their motives, boundaries, and plans for the future - it appears as though none of the characters were well grounded. I will have to watch the film again, and I may pick it up at the B&N sale in July.

I'm now looking for some recommendations... can anyone assist? My two favorite Criteron's are:

Le Cercle Rouge
Fanny and Alexander

Keep in mind I've already exhausted Melville's library, but have yet to dabble in more Bergman. I also really enjoyed Bresson's style in A Man Escaped, so I'm looking to see more of his films - the only other which I've seen is Salesman. Some of my other favorites: Rashomon, The Wages of Fear, Revanche, Le Trou, and The Killing.

Which other movies in the collection are most similar to the titles I've mentioned?

A whole bunch more are showing up today. Perhaps because of price matching.

It's really comedic with the Philip Glass score and no subtitles.
[Show spoiler]The singers' words are synced with the actors speech, but they couldn't possibly be singing.

Mystery Train showed up today, oddly before La Haine, which shipped first. Looks like I'm watching that and Modern Times (which I DVR'd off TCM this morning) today.

Too many blus currently not watched, but added a few more:
3:10 to Yuma
Ministry of Fear
Band of Outsiders
Monsieur Verdoux
The Man Who Knew Too Much
On the Waterfront

Kind of want to get Summer Interlude and Summer with Monika. Maybe Weekend. Maybe the Kurosawa stuff I don't have.

Or maybe it is time to reanalyze my overall collection.

I am pretty sure I would enjoy but I have never seen Repo Man before. Can anyone here compare it to any other films that it is similar to so I know what I am getting myself into before I buy it?

Sid & Nancy was also directed by Alex Cox. I'm sure there are more similarities than just a punk soundtrack.

At this stage I'm getting:
-On the Waterfront
-Fish Tank
-Monsieur Verdoux
-Revanche (when it finally drops to $19.99... Holding up my order.)
& Considering The Double Life of Veronique

I already own the AE release but have yet to even open it. What do you guys think I should do in regards to that? Criterions looks like the better package but I've looked at screenshot comparisons and the two really aren't that alike. The criterion release is noticeably grainier and reveals more detail but noise also seems to be present much of the time aswel.

The AE release looks softer, even smeary in a way but seems to occasionally look clearer than the Criterion release. There's a shot of the leading lady laying on her side with her breast exposed for example, and the nipple is clearer on AE's release while the criterion release seems to practically blur it with intense grain and noise.

Finally AE's release contains a 5.1 mix while Criterion comes with a 2.0 mix. What's your opinions?
