i already own the ae release but have yet to even open it. What do you guys think i should do in regards to that? Criterions looks like the better package but i've looked at screenshot comparisons and the two really aren't that alike. The criterion release is noticeably grainier and reveals more detail but noise also seems to be present much of the time aswel.

The ae release looks softer, even smeary in a way but seems to occasionally look clearer than the criterion release. There's a shot of the leading lady laying on her side with her breast exposed for example, and the nipple is clearer on ae's release while the criterion release seems to practically blur it with intense grain and noise.

Finally ae's release contains a 5.1 mix while criterion comes with a 2.0 mix. What's your opinions?
Order Véronique! Don't even think about it!

Went ahead and ordered the following from Best Buy:

On The Waterfront
Band Of Outsiders
Two-Lane Blacktop
The Blob

Assuming this sale runs through the week, I've got a few more I'd like to grab. Otherwise I can wait until B&N in July...

Seven Samurai though..I mean you've seen it. You know it's fantastic.
I decided to rent Ivan's Childhood from Netflix. It'll be here on Wednesday. Until then, I'm not making a move.

New to the whole criterion collection thing. Bought the Game used to see what the fuss was about and was very impressed with the quality and care put into the release. Also ordered some favorites from the 50% amazon sale (thin red line, traffic, carlos, and che) however looking at all of the criterions releases on blu, I just dont see many having that replayability factor especially for the price. Kinda bummed because of the immense improvement over the regular studio output and DVD versions.

Yeah, the presentation for The Game is remarkable. The near field mix is a thing of beauty!

Good lord the sound mix was amazing. I only have a small sony soundbar but it was pushed to its limits. From time to time I found myself looking around my house caused by the background noise in the film.......it seemed real?

I wasn't very won over by the film either. I think renting is your best bet and if you like it, you should buy it.

No way am I taking a chance of this being the first time B&N doesn't have a sale....

Ordered the 17 I needed from Amazon. Gonna be a LOT of viewing going on late at night!

(I haven't had cable/satellite/antenna in 5+ months, just canceled Netflix to use solely Amazon-Prime viewing..... I'll probably go back to a streaming-only Netflix package though)

Tarkovsky is my favorite director, but I just don't like this film, I don't know if it's because it's Tarkovsky's first film and he was still developing his style or the fact that he took over the film mid-production, but I just lose interest every time I try to watch it, and shut it off 30 - 40 minutes. I do agree that the cinematography is awesome, and the transfer is one of the best the CC has released this year.

I hope I can see all of the 25 or so movies this month so I feel like it was worth overpaying a tad

Christmas in June and July

I can understand why you'd say that, considering you've sunk thousands of dollars into Criterion titles (and hell, Blu-rays in general), but I'm a bit... I don't want to say "selective" because that sounds snobby, so let's go with... "limited" in my movie tastes.

Ehhh, owning all of the Criterion Collection and having a library card is not only cheaper, but more valuable than going to film school....

Come to think of it...a library card, a HULU and Netfix account is more valuable than a film school education...

You know you're slacking off on your viewing when ordering films from the laptop takes 3 trips to the movie storage room to make sure you don't buy a duplicate!!!!

That's the advantage of logging your collection on this site (or another).

ehhhhh disagree.....

I'll preface this by saying that neither of my degrees have anything to do with film:

Maybe you have a point (still probably not) with some fly-by-night program that isn't accredited etc..... but studying under people who have real-world experience, and people who have dedicated their lives to a particular subject matter can't be reproduced simply by buying a bunch of movies, and not even be watching them..... I've watched plenty, and a lot of them go right over my head until I see interviews with those who filmed it, or someone discusses a point of it during an interview and I rewatch and I'm blown away by how I just didn't "get it"

either way... there are technical aspects etc. I'm sure that go into it, that you can't grasp without being behind the lens etc.

Beta Man, if we are talking film knowledge and not production, reading and watching films on your own is a much more efficient route. It just depends on the level of commitment.

I agree with that. I've learned much more about films on my own.
