Hello everyone! First time poster here. I've enjoyed following this thread and learning lots about film as I go. I was wondering if anyone could make a couple suggestions for me. I've picked up several movies during the recent sale, but wouldn't mind grabbing 2-3 more while they're on sale. Based on the movies that I have already in my collection, what are some other titles that you think I would enjoy? So far in the sale I've picked up the following:

Badlands
Repo Man
Anatomy of a Murder
Rosemary's Baby
the 39 steps

I'm pretty much open to any genre and have really enjoyed the Criterion titles that I've purchased thus far. Would love to keep exploring and figured there was no better place to get input than from this thread. Let me know what you think!

You have chosen wisely.

Naked Lunch is a fascinating film (or least it was when I saw it decades ago as a teenager), but I would not quite place it in the same league as Badlands or Videodrome.

Naked Lunch is an icy, bizarre film and I think it's close in tone to eXistenZ, especially with the art design. It's well worth a look.

Take a look at the extras. They look first rate!

I am looking to pickup a few more criterions before head off to vacation. I am mainly looking for ones that are dark/noir/mystery. Something on the lines of 39 Steps and the Following. Of the ones listed below, which 3 or 4 would you buy if you were me:

Kiss Me Deadly
Anatomy of Murder
Charade
Lady Vanishes
Sweet Smell of Success
400 Blows

Now eXistenZ is an underrated Cronenberg film. Wish it had gotten a respectable blu-ray release.

If you liked The 39 Steps, then I am sure that you'll also enjoy The Lady Vanishes. The Lady Vanishes even comes with another fun film, Crook's Tour, so you're getting two for one (although The Lady Vanishes is vastly superior to the bonus film).

Kiss Me Deadly is a wonderful film noir as well that you'll especially love if you are fan of Pulp Fiction or Repo Man.

The other two are excellent, but the bolded best fit your criteria.

Note: Charade is getting a Universal release in about a month.

If you can find it on the cheap, it's worth a buy. Watchable transfer but could be better.

Kiss Me Deadly, Anatomy, and Sweet Smell of Success.

400 Blows is excellent, possibly the best of the six films listed, but doesn't fit with the dark/noir/mystery genres you're looking it. It's much more of a coming-of-age story.

What are everyone's thoughts on the David Lean Directs Noel Coward box set? Is it a fairly safe blind buy? Hard to resist the $50 price tag.

Considering Brief Encounter is one of the greatest romantic films I have ever seen, yes! Worth a look. I have not seen In Which we Serve and Blithe Spirit yet, so I cannot comment on their quality.

If you end up liking Brief Encounter, do check out Letter from an Unknown Woman (Olive released it on BluRay last year), its very much a soaring melodrama in the same vein.

Pretty good advice for a newcomer to the collection. For aficionados, the Blu-ray quality coupled with the added value of the supplements enriches the film experience and makes a purchase (blind or otherwise) worthwhile. And we all wait for the 50% off sales.

Thanks! I'll probably give this a look then, either during this sale or the B&N in July.

On the subject of eXistenZ... If possible, just grab the Canadian DVD release. The blu-ray looks a little better but it isn't good or even great. As mentioned, it's watchable. The Canadian dvd release however comes with 3 audio commentaries and an hour long documentary. I've only listened to Cronenberg's track but that alone makes it worth obtaining.
