Another day without a sign of La Haine (the title I ordered that I'm most excited about), but four titles I've seen and finally decided to purchase showed up. On The Waterfront, Marienbad, In The Mood for Love, and Band of Outsiders. I've got a stack of about 10 titles I've already seen but haven't revisited since I picked them up on blu, so I think I'm going to start making my way through all those this week.

Wild Strawberries Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() p.s. I don't know if there are any fans of Ingrid Thulin here, but if you like her work, I would like to recommend Nattlek and The Damned. The former is unlikely to ever get a U.S. release (read about its history) so it is a good idea to track down a copy of the Swedish DVD release, which is English-friendly. Additionally, New Yorker Video/Project X have a very nice release of Mai Zetterling's The Girls, with two of Ingmar Bergman's favorite actresses, Bibi Andersson and Harriet Andersson. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

I don't think Criterion has a fantastic relationship with Warner Bros. The chances of Criterion releasing something from Warner Bros. that hasn't come out yet is rare, and releasing something already out is even more rare. |

I really liked them both but if I could only keep one I'd probably go with World on a Wire.
Solaris is really interesting and wasn't afraid to raise questions without providing pat answers and was at times confusing but in the very good 'wait, what exactly am I watching here' way. World on a Wire is a more straight-forward, traditional narrative. It's really, really well done and also very interesting. It's a mix of straight sci-fi, seventies conspiracy movies and a dash or two of noir. Think Doctor Who (Tom Baker, of course) meets The Conversation meets Chinatown. They both look fantastic and they're both the kind of sci-fi the world could use a lot more of. |

Well, the half-price Criterion order I placed last Sunday arrived in two deliveries on Thursday and Friday. Half I've seen and half were blind-buys.
Pierre Etaix set 29.99 Metropolitan 19.99 The Forgiveness of Blood 19.99 World on a Wire 19.99 Life is Sweet 19.99 Repo Man 19.99 Band of Outsiders 19.99 Weekend 19.99 Medium Cool 19.99 My Life as a Dog 19.99 Now if the sale is continuing this weekend I'm debating on whether to get any additional titles at these prices. I'm really tempted to get IDENTIFICATION OF A WOMAN, MOMENT OF TRUTH, VANYA ON 42ND STREET (all blind-buys), BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (both of which I've seen), and maybe a few others. The Monterey Pop Festival is also tempting. The problem is, most of the titles I really want I've already got (and in most cases paid roughly 30% off list price instead of 50% off). Decisions, decisions. |

Just watched Jean Cocteau's Orpheus. What a beautiful film and such great picture and audio quality! That's the first Cocteau film I've seen. Now I'm kind of considering getting Beauty and the Beast just because I was so impressed. I'm not sure Ill enjoy it as much so I will definitely give it some more thought.
Anyway, after watching a Orpheus I'm in the mood for more classic cinema. Next up is Basket Case 2! :P |

As I've been watching The Twilight Zone set, I've been keeping a tally of prominent Criterion Collection actors who appear in the episodes.
Warren Oates (Two-Lane Blacktop) has a small role as a jeep driver in "The Purple Testament." Last night, I watched "The Mirror", about a dictator who can see the faces of his future assassins in a mirror. The dictator was played by Peter Falk (Wings of Desire). This was no immediately apparent, because his character has a beard and is made up to resemble Fidel Castro, but I was tipped off by Rod Serling himself in the teaser at the end of the previous episode. It was still difficult to see at first, but I could not unsee it once I saw it. I know from past viewings that there are a great many other Criterion Collection actors in later episodes in the series (I'm at the beginning of Season Three now.). Robert Redford, Dean Stockwell, Dennis Hopper, etc. I know that I'm forgetting about several actors, because pretty much every older actor in the world got his or her start in The Twilight Zone. |
