sorting and categorizing are obsessions for me. I sort all of my DVDs and BDs together in a set of genres, and have Criterion mixed together with non-Criterion.

Anglo American drama & comedy
Asian drama & comedy
Asian epics, samurai, & period
French drama & comedy
Italian drama & comedy
Russian/Soviet drama & comedy
other European drama & comedy
labor drama
political & legal drama
epic (period/historical films about ancient times to the Renaissance)
period (about early modern times to 1914)
war
sci-fi
thrillers
adventures
criminals, gangsters, & cops
horror
western
spy, cold war, international, & political thrillers

Within each category, the movies are sorted chronologically. yeah, I'm obsessed with this system and love the topic of how to categorize movie collections.

Sometimes a film confounds this system - e.g., is Drive a thriller or a crime movie? - but I'm happy with how it looks and works.

Ditto. Plus I sort the foreign articles in, as well. I.E. Le Cercle Rouge would go under L.

I don't think Criterion has a fantastic relationship with Warner Bros. The chances of Criterion releasing something from Warner Bros. that hasn't come out yet is rare, and releasing something already out is even more rare.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and responses.

I don't keep Criterion titles separate, although it's been tempting at times. I keep everything alphabetical and have one set of shelves with movies from 1960 to the present, and another with movies before 1960, including a shelf of silent films only. I have separate shelves for animation, documentaries, and TV shows.

The problem comes with box sets, which I usually alphabetize by the director or star's last name they're collected under, but sometimes by the title of the main feature.

I want! I see you have Salo, I really want to buy that movie but I think it would just sit on my shelf. I am torn.

Salo is definitely worth seeing. As a movie it is well made and does what it sets out to do, which is to make you not like it and believe that there is no hope. So there is also very low replay value, imo. Well, not exactly - I've seen it twice, the second time was simply because I was so turned off the first time around, I needed to see that I wasn't missing something. Nope, it's a movie without hope or any inkling of redemption, and it's also absolutely disgusting. To my eyes (and stomach) it is an entirely different league of gross and repulsive compared to, say, Empire of Passion or Antichrist. With that said, I like Pasolini a lot and you can't say that it's not well crafted. The ways he uses the camera and the mise en scene are well calculated in view of what he wants to accomplish with the film.

With the exception of titles on the AFI 100 (which go on that shelf) Criterion has its own section broken down by...

Watched/unwatched
Digipack/plastic
Language/region

Salo is a horrible experience. I'm open minded and certainly not squeamish. But, if a filmmaker's best idea to show the horrid nature of living under a Facist rule is to force young teens to eat shit and get raped and tortured in a closed environment, he is officially creatively bankrupt.

Get it! You won't regret it, it's well worth seeing. Although I'm afraid you have a point because it's not something you will watch over and over again at all.

I've seen it once, so I would buy it just to have. Still not 100% sure.
