That's not always true. Although I'm not a big fan of DD's shipping, there are some titles that are not comparable to Amazon. I'm straightforward hunter when it comes to pricing and see which product I can get the best deal. When it comes to sales for Criterion, the best I've seen is B&N's 50% off sale especially if you are a member. Amazon has had Criterion sales where B&N has all Criterion titles, Amazon's last sale was just a few.

Continuing.... "The Art of Buster Keaton" from Kino is advertised as $174, lowest I have seen it on Amazon give or take is around $146. DD has it now for $99. Same goes for "The Fanny Trilogy", lowest I have seen it on Amazon is $55-$59, you can get it on DD for $29.99 (right now, granted it's sold out at this time).

But when it comes to Criterions or anything, it all depends on how much effort you want to put in getting the best prices.

When it comes to art house titles....You don't have to pay for a product when the prices are high. There are those who want to support a company and will pay at top price and there are those who wait for the best sales.

Well, as much as I would love to have my dream 200-inch screen and a top of the line projector, I'm just going to have to make do with what I have. Hehe...

Expect a wait either way, maybe more than a month. When I Paypalled 'em for the new cases (all of them) I got:

"Thank you for your case replacement order!

Please note that we are out of stock on all cases and expect more to arrive within the next two weeks. As soon as we receive more cases, we will ship them out through First Class/Priority USPS Postal Service, so you should expect to receive your order within 3-5 weeks from now.

Please let me know if you have any more questions and thank you for supporting Criterion!

Cheers,

Giles
The Criterion Collection"

Not that I care or anything, I've had the old ones all this time and I had no idea this program existed until I read this thread, but for anyone looking to get new cases "soon" that isn't going to happen.

Australia Replacement Cases

Does anyone have spare replacement cases for The 400 Blows & Last Year at Marienbad that they are willing to ship to me in Australia please?

Of course I am willing to reimburse for shipping costs and their trouble.

I just received an email from Criterion telling me that they no longer ship replacement cases internationally after I sent my PayPal payment.

The only reason I purchased my region free Blu Ray player was to purchase Criterion Blu Rays. Criterion don't ship them internationally, and now they have ceased shipping their replacement cases as well.

How much does it cost to ship to Australia?

If you Paypal me the money for the cases and the actual cost to send them to Australia I can send it off to them and send you the cases. Doesn't really bother me, I go to the PO all the time.

They're back ordered though, so it could take a few weeks.

I've seen it mentioned once or twice before, but is anyone else unhappy that Criterion has chosen (at least for now) to package all their blu-rays in the uniform clear plastic cases? I believe all their recent DVD releases have also been clear plastic plastic cases outside of the box sets and Lola Montes. One of the coolest things about the DVDs was the variety of packagings especially their side loading cardboard digipaks (Bicycle Thieves, Ugetsu, Amarcord, Pandora's Box, Vampyr etc). I agree their cardboard digipaks from the original blu-ray releases were flimsy and needed to be replaced but the DVD side loaders were much sturdier. I'd love to see mini versions in the future if any of the aforementioned films were to receive the blu-ray treatment. Actually now that I think about it, I recently noticed at Barnes and Noble that The Rules of the Game and Short Cuts have been released in the normal thinner clear plastic cases. I just think the variety makes for a more interesting looking collection.

Maybe they're just sick and tired of replacing damaged boxes, slipcovers and inserts. I know it's really about what's inside the box and probably much more cost effective for the company but I really miss how handsome some of their DVD releases used to be.

No.

I think that they look very elegant.

i agree with pro-b. when i was just buying dvds, the cooler/nicer/weirder the packing, the better. but once i made the blu switch, i love the uniform look of them all. whereas i used to love slipcases, i loathe them now. with the criterions, i am glad that, thanks to the replacement cases, they all have their own seperate look from regular blus, sans benjamin button, and that they all fit in well together. it gives it more of a "Collection" look, at least to me.

Don't get me wrong I think the clear cases look great. I just miss their side-loading cardboard packages with the thicker bound booklets. Two Lane Blacktop and Mishima: Life in 4 Chapters jump to mind. Gorgeous packages.

There are people who are nitpicking about the C on the spine being different heights.
I think the majority of Criterion collectors are way too OCD to want different packaging. UNIFORMITY!

I think the majority of people on here just cares about collecting and don't even watch the movies. I don't get it. You buy a movie to watch it, not to be cool and say you got all of the Criterion blu's. I am not buying all of the Criterion blu's, I buy the movies (dvds or blus) that I like.

Agreed. Packaging and labels aside-- some of us just want to watch great films on Blu-ray.

I noticed a troubling trend in the steel book thread- people buying sb's even though they don't like the film---- just because it's on steel book. Also, I seem to remember someone on this site that bought ALL the Criterion blu-rays then proceeded to ask people if he'd like the films he just bought.

I do not buy all of the Criterion. Movies are for watching and I prefer buying or in this case upgrading to Blu-ray those I truly enjoy. I rent the other Criterion releases. Afterall Criterion movies are in all cases movies well worth watching at least once.

I love to get a Criterion. I must say, movies released by them have totally opened my eyes to films I have one, never heard of or secondly, just knowing Criterion is putting out makes me want to invest in one.

I've seen a good sized chunk of the Criterion Collection. Some movies I've loved and have become cherished to me. Some movies I've enjoyed, but I probably wouldn't watch again. There are even a few that I have outright hated (Salo, I'm looking at you). I have a hard time believing anyone loves every Criterion release so much they need to own it. I think your film collection tells a story about what kind of person you are. Buying movies you don't care about so you can have a pretty shelf is against everything I believe as a film fan and collector.
