I just watched Mountains of the Moon on DVD.
This title would be PERFECT for a Criterion blu-ray release. It is a great film by Bob Rafelson, and a number of his films have already been featured in the Criterion America Lost and Found BBS box set. I wish this title could be brought to BD. There are very memorable scenes in that film and I for one would be happy to see it come to Criterion. Roger Deakins also does the cinematography and his work is world class. Although Studiocanal owns the rights, I dont care. They should release this film in high definition because the old DVD is of terrible quality and just doesn't do this film justice. ![]() Last edited by jw007; 06-12-2013 at 09:06 AM. |

I watched Purple Noon last night and what an intense, amazing film. I believe The Talented Mr. Ripley to be a modern masterpiece and, for some reason, thought that would cloud my judgment of this film. It didn't and I am glad for that as everything works in this film from the acting to the music to the stunning cinematography (it didn't even bother me when unknowing passers-by would look back at the camera because that just seems like the thing to do in crowded Italian areas and, wow, do they get crowded). There are also shots of Delon that are so overwhelming because the man is just too good looking; like how is that even possible?!
![]() The film looks like it was made in the late 60s (style-wise) so imagine my shock when I looked at the back cover and saw that it was released in 1960. I guess I'll give the novel a go soon just to relate it to both adaptations as I feel that I'm missing out on that aspect. |

I took a short break from watching the films in my America Lost and Found set after I finished Five Easy Pieces, because I wanted to watch Earthquake and Dirty Mary Crazy Larry/Race with the Devil this past weekend, and then resume watching Season Three of The Twilight Zone set. I'm going out of town this weekend, but will start up the box set again with Drive, He Said later on. I've already seen the movies via my old Criterion DVD set of America Lost and Found, but the picture quality upgrade is such that watching the Blu-rays is like watching the movies for the first time again. |

I managed to avoid the current Criterion sale in order to wait until the hopeful July B&N sale, but I could not turn down the current Olive Films deal on ImportCDs ($12.99 per title).
I just ordered The Quiet Man, The Enforcer, and Sands of the Kalahari. |

I recently started collecting Criterion movies on blu-ray, maybe have 25 so far. I'm noticing that the films go out of print after some time and, being almost OCD about needed to collect everything once I start, would it be a good idea to go after the current out of print blu-rays first or buy other Criterions that are available and substantially cheaper. If I'm reading correctly, there are currently 9 OOP Criterion blu-ray's, of which I own 3. With the current sale, today I could buy one OOP or 4 available titles. With titles like the man who fell to earth and the third man, it would be more like 18 sale titles or those 2. So I guess my questions are:
1) Start buying OOP's right away for fear of them skyrocketing in price or stick to sale titles? 2) Do OOP's ever come back in print? 3) How quickly or often I should say do titles go OOP and with having limited income, is it possible to keep up? Any feedback from Criterion collectors that have been doing this for a while would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

If you really want to have, say, The Man Who Fell to Earth, it might be worth the purchase for you, but keep in mind there are other ways to view it if that's all you're after (other releases, Netflix). Also, yes, sometimes titles go out of print because they are planning a reissue; I think this is the case with Playtime right now. As a caveat, if you're into blind buying, and you see a title that you were on the fence about checking out, and it's just gone OOP, and there are few other viewing options, it would probably be worth it to pick it up before it skyrockets.
