Right now my picks for the next Criterion sale are:
The Devil's Backbone I love this movie and I love Del Toro. Plain and simple. I own the UK release and it looks like crap. I will be upgrading to Criterion's without a doubt if this is included in the sale. -Wild Strawberries Pretty much the only Ingmar Bergman film I have a real desire to see, especially since Victor Sjostrom is in the lead role. I loved The Phantom Carriage so, so much. Wild Strawberries looks much less boring than Bergman's other films. -Safety Last! Over the last year or so I've gone from liking silent films to becoming a fan of them. My search and discovery of the best this time period has to offer continues and Safety Last! Feels like a safe blind buy. Some others I'm seriously considering but not sure on... -Wings of Desire In the case of Wings of Desire... It seems like it could be amazing but on the other hand, I hate heavy handed religious films. I'm not religious and pro-Christian films aren't very enjoyable to me because I can't relate to what they're preaching. That's certainly not to say I hate every movie with religious aspects. I have a feeling that Wings of Desire isn't one of those types of movies though, despite focusing on an angel. -The Wages of Fear ith Wages of Fear, I must admit that the overwhelmingly positive opinions and recommendations by forum members is what got me so interested. The run time seems bizarrely long for the premise but I haven't heard anyone saying it drags. In fact I haven't heard anyone say a bad thing about it. I think I'll grab it either way. -Island of Lost Souls already own Island of Lost Souls in MoC's beautiful steelbook but the special features for Criterion's release looks amazing. I love my steelbook but content wise, I want the criterion release more. It's a superficial thing to worry about but in all fairness... The steelbook is bloody gorgeous lol. I can't figure out what to do though. Other titles in my wish list that interest me but will probably require more thought: -Carlos -Still Walking May be a watch-once kind of film. It's received excellent reviews from other members but I've also heard its similar in style to Ozu. I'm not a fan of Ozu's style. -Pierre Etaix -The Kid with the Bike Considering just getting the AE release. This may end up being a movie I only watch once. Criterion's release comes with a long interview that looks excellent but I could get AE's release for like half the price of a half price criterion. -My Life as a Dog -Two-Lane Blacktop -3:10 to Yuma I love the remake and I'm not entirely sure if I'll enjoy this one as much. Normally I go for originals but the remake just got everything so perfectly right. The cinematography, the vicious violence, the acting, the music. Everything. While I'm sure the original is good, I may only watch it once as a curiosity and out of respect but I have a strong feeling the remake will still be my go-to version. -The Last Metro I like movies focusing on the back stage side of things in productions and shows (think Red Shoes. I LOVE it!). Catherine Deneuve is gorgeous and a great actress but I just really, really hate Gerard Depardieu's face. His face ruins any excitement I have for any movie he's in. I liked Life of Pi from a visual stand-point but the story was too earnest for my liking. Even still, my feelings for it went from "it was okay though slightly disappointing" to just plain hating the movie because Depardieu was in it for as long as he was. That's mean. I know. There's no excuse for being so shallow. When leaving the cinema someone asked me if the movie was any good (yes, they payed for their ticket and actually asked me that while they were lined up to go in next). I told them that Gerard Depardieu purposely went out of his way to destroy the film (I forgot to mention he's only briefly in it. Oops. Sorry not sorry). Man, I've got some real issues with this guy. Anyway, next. -Repo Man I already own the MoC steelbook. Criterion's release is very appealing as I like the look of the more saturated colour scheme and slightly opened up aspect ratio, not to mention the packaging is gorgeous, there is a couple more special features and the TV version is in 1080i rather than regular old SD on MoC's. -The Battle of Algiers Not a big fan of political films but this one doesn't really strike me as boring. -Amarcord -Fanny and Alexander My interest in Ingmar Bergman and his work isn't very high in all honesty. I've seen a couple and found his style visually pleasing but the movies as a whole so, so boring. Fanny and Alexander seems different. More exciting and joyful to watch. It bloody well better be if I'm going to invest 5 hours in it! Haha -Belle De Jour Catherine Deneuve. I suppose I should put more thought into this one... The main deciding factor is whether I should get Criterions or Studio Canal's. Criterion's seems slightly better looking but which release has the better special features is the real question. I only want to buy 1 not both. |

I've seen the movie twice now; I just recently upgraded it to the Blu-Ray, thanks to the recent sales, but I did give it my second viewing not too long ago. Thus, I reviewed it previously on my blog.
In short, yeah, it's definitely berserk. ![]() |
