Hey there Kbg

Considering Frances Ha may become part of the Criterion Collection, my latest blog entry is a review of it.

I disagree about film discussion being solely about cover art, the film themselves, etc.

I love bringing politics and social discussion into film when it is in the film's message or subtext. Since this conversation discusses Weekend and La Cage Aux Faux it is certainly relevant although it should be said that the conversation should be tempered, so at least the conversation appear civilized.

Yeah that's fine until people start getting "butthurt." I only gave my preference on film and that was already too much for this forum.

As far as Frances Ha, I'm pretty excited for it. I've only see his "Kicking and Screaming," but it really connected with me as a college student. Almost like a pre-"The Graduate." I look forward to seeing more of his stuff.

They are currently $29.01 at Barnes and Noble I think. Factor in the buy 2 get 1 free, it's a good deal.

Found the clip where he says this here. I'd like to think Stewart was just doing some tired schtick and would understand the value of pride parades in a society where there's been such a long history of discrimination and violence against gays (other clips like this one make it obvious he's pro-gay-marriage and anti-discrimination), but either way it's a pretty lame joke.

I imagine a good deal of you people are EXTREMELY offended by Rupert Everett's anti gay-marriage viewpoint.

thanks very much, very helpful. yeah, I agree with you on Stewart's wider views and the importance of that context.

Yes, Frances Ha is a wonderful movie, saw it a couple of weeks ago . . . definitely Truffaut vibes, also very Godard, reminded me a lot of Band a Part because much of the plot revolves around trios and their interrelations.

The date OR a review. I guess if you don't have any other information there, there's not much point tagging it?

http://letterboxd.com/tedprior/ by the way

Letterboxd is a lot of fun, if you haven't checked it out yet everyone.

I dig Letterboxd. I don't always write about the stuff I watch, but I try to get a sentence or two in as frequently as possible. I've also found it to be an great tool to find recommendations (based on users who've given a lot of similar scores/share the same favorite films). I do shake my head at a lot of stuff I read on there too.

I'm watching The Gold Rush tonight for the first time and was wondering which version do you guys prefer: the 1925 original cut or the 1942 re-release cut?

I recommend the re-release. The first one might be more "historical" but the re-release is in line with what Chaplin might have wanted from the beginning and I find it much more entertaining.

for me, it's not so much the viewpoint or policy position. i disagree with Everett on the policy, but that is what debate, politics, and law is for. i have plenty of friends, family, and colleagues who share Everett's position. i get along with them, respect their position and their dignity, and don't harbor any kind of special grudge.

rather, what's disturbing to me is the vitriolic language from EricJ, his insufferably sweeping generalizations, his faux, prefabricated historical and cultural analyses that parade around (lol) as thought, but are in fact exemplary of the "Age of Stupid" (if there ever was an Age of Enlightenment), and the ways that through his posts he manifests forms of "micro-fascism" (to use a term from the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze) . . . reflecting a desire to control and conserve, to have power over the normal and the abnormal in life, what these mean, and what others might say about them, and a sense of personal entitlement in being able to s**t on others.

whereas fascism in Salo is macro state-based or party-based fascism, although manifest in intimate and concrete ways, EricJ's postings make the forum, which i love reading, unfortunately feel like Salo sometimes, where one feels sick in reading his posts. he exhibits in vitriol and hubris, and in the anonymity of being able to hide such hate speech behind avatars and call-signs, fascist impulses that are about dehumanizing, cavalierly joking about, and in many ways stereotyping and denigrating forms of existence, otherness, experience, pleasure, complexity, community, and family that may be different from his own.
