I disagree about film discussion being solely about cover art, the film themselves, etc.
I love bringing politics and social discussion into film when it is in the film's message or subtext. Since this conversation discusses Weekend and La Cage Aux Faux it is certainly relevant although it should be said that the conversation should be tempered, so at least the conversation appear civilized. |

As far as Frances Ha, I'm pretty excited for it. I've only see his "Kicking and Screaming," but it really connected with me as a college student. Almost like a pre-"The Graduate." I look forward to seeing more of his stuff. |

![]() Yes, Frances Ha is a wonderful movie, saw it a couple of weeks ago . . . definitely Truffaut vibes, also very Godard, reminded me a lot of Band a Part because much of the plot revolves around trios and their interrelations. |

I dig Letterboxd. I don't always write about the stuff I watch, but I try to get a sentence or two in as frequently as possible. I've also found it to be an great tool to find recommendations (based on users who've given a lot of similar scores/share the same favorite films). I do shake my head at a lot of stuff I read on there too.

I recommend the re-release. The first one might be more "historical" but the re-release is in line with what Chaplin might have wanted from the beginning and I find it much more entertaining.

rather, what's disturbing to me is the vitriolic language from EricJ, his insufferably sweeping generalizations, his faux, prefabricated historical and cultural analyses that parade around (lol) as thought, but are in fact exemplary of the "Age of Stupid" (if there ever was an Age of Enlightenment), and the ways that through his posts he manifests forms of "micro-fascism" (to use a term from the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze) . . . reflecting a desire to control and conserve, to have power over the normal and the abnormal in life, what these mean, and what others might say about them, and a sense of personal entitlement in being able to s**t on others. whereas fascism in Salo is macro state-based or party-based fascism, although manifest in intimate and concrete ways, EricJ's postings make the forum, which i love reading, unfortunately feel like Salo sometimes, where one feels sick in reading his posts. he exhibits in vitriol and hubris, and in the anonymity of being able to hide such hate speech behind avatars and call-signs, fascist impulses that are about dehumanizing, cavalierly joking about, and in many ways stereotyping and denigrating forms of existence, otherness, experience, pleasure, complexity, community, and family that may be different from his own.
