Also. The conversation I started was in relation to some movies being "too gay" and trying to make the point that gay cinema has more breadth and complexity than some people would originally consider.

No such thing as too much Bowie.
Hopefully that's the next CC bluray to feature a Bowie performance and not Twin Peaks FWWM. Paramount should just dump it as an extra on the BluRay release of the series.

It would be Ssooooo awesome to have a Tony Scott film in the collection

I'd be interested in having The Hunger and True Romance in the collection. As for the others...

I see. Is it fair to characterize that Slacker is primarily about intellectual nerds or misfits (i.e., over-educated people), whom they publicly revealed their personalities, grappling with social exclusion, and trying to make use their intellectual talent in the "real world"? Or, it goes beyond that?

His later work is his best. Nobody else was able to fully utilize the editing booth to create such great modern works of art. What people tend to brush off is how much of an impact Roeg had on his work.

Deja Vu is one of the best films of the 2000's and makes a great companion piece to La Jettee and Solaris.

Sorry, if this has already been asked/answered but- Does anyone know when this Amazon/Best Buy sale will end? It seems like its run well beyond the usual 1-2 week window. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

I just finished listening to both No Joy albums (Ghost Blonde and Wait to Pleasure) and the differences between both albums are vast. Wait to Pleasure is clearly a better album and far more immediate even though their first album had many moments that showed promise. I think Wait to Pleasure is a fine album but I can't see myself listening to this album repeatedly unlike the MBV album which I probably listened to about 20 times now (though that was all within a span of 2-3 weeks). This is a good band that does the shoegaze sound right, but the female front-women do not move me. A nu-gaze band like the Raveonettes on the other hand do, and I love listening to their music (which is immediately catchy and addictive).

I plan on listening more to No Joy as an initial review is not justifiably fair, but these are my thoughts.

1990s shoegaze...
Ride
Catherine Wheel
My Bloody Valentine
Lush
Chapterhouse
Pale Saints
Slowdive

For some present-day bands influenced by shoegaze, I heartily recommend...
Film School
School of Seven Bells
DIIV

I second the motion for Lost in Translation to be a Criterion title. If this is ever announced, I will do cartwheels from one side of Atlanta to the other.

I do occasionally listen to the album throughout, but most often i just skip to Hare Tarot Lies, Lunar Phobia & Slug Night. These tracks simply do not lose their punch after dozens of listens.

I really do love Jasmine's voice (I have a weakness for female singers, especially rock) it's very soothing and dreamy, especially when layered with all the guitars and synths.

Will need to check out Lush, Chapterhouse And Pale Saints.

School of Seven Bells is fantastic. The only artists I have listened to more in the last four years are Aimee Mann (solo and Til Tuesday) and Ryan Adams. A very enthusiastic thumbs up for me

Marketa Lazarová Blu-ray REVIEW

An all-around superb release (including the supplemental features).

If you already have the R2 DVD release, do not hesitate for a second to purchase Criterion's Blu-ray. The difference between the two is like night and day!

This release has a reserved spot on my Top 10 list at the end of the year.

Thanks for the review Pro-B.

I've been wanting to see this film for over two years now. The time has finally come

Are you trying to break my heart? While FWWM isn't perfect, in large parts because of actors not wanting to participate, etc., it is by no means worthy of being dumped as an extra.

I'm as big a Lynch fan as there is (including the first season of Twin Peaks), but boy, it was a huge disappointment.

I think there are a few very effective set pieces (especially the ones that provide the full explanation for what happened). But the rest of it does feel perfunctory and kind of flat: both performances and direction.

Did you read the news that Lynch is about to start working on a new project?

Yes, No Joy do remind me of School of Seven Bells a bit. I'm listening to this album again now and some of the tracks are starting to grow on me, especially those tracks you mentioned.

Don't forget:

Asobi Seksu
Vinyl Williams
Pia Fraus
A Place to Bury Strangers

for the new shoegaze (nu-gaze) bands.

And also for older shoegaze/space rock bands, there is:

Blonde Redhead
Swervedriver
The Telescopes
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Flying Saucer Attack
Spacemen 3
Spiritualized (first album)
The Verve (first album)

Criterion doesn't have rights to any of the Handmade Films catalog anymore.

Is there a website or webpage where I can find out which film companies/studios Criterion doesn't have the rights to anymore (to release BD editions)?
