Frances Ha is going to make for a splendid addition to the Criterion Collection!

I just saw the film in a little arthouse theater here and I absolutely loved it. And yes, the soundtrack is killer and I dig the David Bowie song too.

Also, Every1's A Winner by Hot Chocolate was the best featured song in this film. Totally cinematic guitar section!

There needs to be more movies like Frances Ha made. Brilliant Baumbach.

Great to hear you are also a fan, jw007. I wish I would have mentioned those tracks in my review. Perfect iron musical choices

Dr. Svet recently posted a review of the French version of Identification of a Woman. I'm so tempted to pick it up for those extras and the different color-scheme

Wow! Comparing screencaps is like day and night!

Hi Abdrewes. Do you think if this film was released in color, not in black and white, the film would have been stronger? Sometimes certain movies just fit in black and white (less information) and it really gets right to the point.

By the way, sorry for mistaking you for that other guy a few days ago (who was trying to charge money for a list of B&N stores holding OOP BDs). ha.

Ha.

Slightly on the topic of Criterion related stuff....

I was doing a neuro check on a patient who I had previously been discussing David Bowie with (he had a book with him... a biography of some sort, don't recall the name...) So I went through some standard questions name/bday/place/president/date and then I said "Name three movies with David Bowie"

He threw out "The Hunger" "Labrynth" and "The Man Who Fell To Earth"

I walked out... ran into our staff Neurologist, and he said "Any residual deficits" and I said "I asked him to name three movies with David Bowie" and he looked at me puzzled, said "you did?" and I said... "Yep... he nailed it" and walked away.

I love when I can film-geek at work....

No apologies necessary.

I mentioned in my review that Baumbach took influence from the tableaux structure of Cleo from 5-7, Vivre as Vie, but that in fact it's operating on a different, less overtly stylized plane.

Unless your name is Fritz Lang, Josef Von Sternberg or Raoul Walsh, the use of B&W will narrow an audience's field of vision to the performative aspects. I think kind of like Faces or Shadows, both by Cassavettes, it limits it in a great way. How characters respond to each other or generally act is more important than the plot, or really what the camera is doing. Those are the most affecting moments in the film: Frances doing hand stands, running through sidewalks, conversing with her roommates, and especially Sophie. And the awkward moments, wow, I felt they were less deliberate than those seen in Greenberg, Squid or Margot. There's a fluidity here that Baumbach hasn't tapped into prior (in my opinion).

Interesting points. I have not seen all of Noah Baumbach's films so I cannot say I am well versed enough in his work. For some odd reason though, this film not only reminded me of various Woody Allen films but also that of Metropolitan (directed by Whit Stillman). Maybe its just that New York City is such a main character too. I really love how Baumbach really was able to express his love for the city in this film. It's a really fun and realistic movie with very familiar characters. This film took me back to my 20s too.

I love Heat and Dust, great script by RPJ based on her own novel and gorgeously shot with some VERY pleasant-looking actors.

Just wondering about The Third Man. Is the digipack release valued more than the plastic case? Both sealed.

That commentary track is stuff of legend. Bay tells you the rules to film making which includes that you never kill children in your movies then bam, he has an asteroid killing millions of them. Also, you get to hear Ben Affleck doing Sling Blade's Karl imitation as an added bonus.

Yes, the presentation of this film is stunning on blu. A wonderful film. Very intense and emotional. But Cameron's Titanic is not what I would call a 'remake'.

A likely possibility it's 'It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

The clue's earth is mad in the sense of angry. The movie is mad in the sense of crazy.

Man! This thread moves fast. I hope this is the second to last time you guys have to suffer through my LCR purchase updates. I got a tracking number!

Anyways, I fell asleep last night while watching the The Ballad of Narayama (blame it on the whiskey) but was enjoying what I saw
[Show spoiler](Up until they left for the mountain)
. I was really digging the Kabuki style, the beautiful sets, and the soundtrack .

We've already been discussing it for the past few days and most of us think that it's "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"

I actually am pretty positive it is that now because there's four mad faces and there's four "mads" in the title of the film.

Excellent movie! Again, Criterion's $30 titles frequently upstage their $40 titles. Of all the CC blind buys I have made recently, Jubal, Gate of Hell & Ballad of Narayma have been among my very favorites.

Nice, tonight I am trying to decide on a drink-film pairing.

The Big Lebowski - White Russian
Leprechaun 2 - Blended Canadian Whiskey

Blue Velvet - with PABST BLUE RIBBON!!!!!

James Cameron's Titanic is a prequel for the 1980 film, Raise the Titanic. It works fairly well on its own terms as a stand alone film, though.

I prefer A Night to Remember to both of the above, though. Certain historical elements of A Night to Remember have been disproved by recent research, but it's still a strong story with enough factual elements to preserve its validity.
