They didn't exactly skimp on supplements.

[Show spoiler]
  • Trailer - original trailer for The Tin Drum. In German, with optional English subtitles. (4 min, 1080i).
  • Volker Schlondorff - in this long video interview, director Volker Schlondorff discusses the production history of The Tin Drum, his collaboration and interaction with French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Belle de jour, That Obscure Object of Desire), Günter Grass' novel (with some interesting remarks about its popularity in Poland where the German director was looking for shooting locations) as well as its adaptation, Oskar's unique personality, etc. The interview was conducted exclusively for Criterion in 2012. In English, not subtitled. (68 min, 1080p).
  • On The Tin Drum - in this video interview, film scholar Timothy Corrigan (New German Cinema: The Displaced Image) discusses the importance of The Tin Drum, the evolution of German Cinema after WW2, the new generation of German filmmakers during the '50s and '60s that will ultimately give German Cinema a new identity, the influence of American culture/Hollywood in Germany after WW2, etc. The interview was recorded exclusively for Criterion in 2012. In English, not subtitled. (21 min, 1080p).
  • The Platform - a scene from The Tin Drum accompanied by an audio recording of author Gunter Grass reading the corresponding passage from his novel. In German, with optional English subtitles. (9 min, 1080i).
  • 1. Adorf and Carriere - video interview extracted from the French television program Les rendez-vous du dimanche. Actor Mario Adorf and co-screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere discuss their collaboration with Volker Schlondorff, their interactions with Gunter Grass, as well as David Bennent's performance. In French, with optional English subtitles. (5 min, 1080i).
  • 2. Bennent and Schlondorff - video interview with actor David Bennent (Oskar) and director Vokler Schlondorff filmed at the Cannes Film Festival. The two gentlemen were interviewed shortly before the festival jury would announce that The Tin Drum has won the prestigious Palme d'Or Award (in a tie with Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now). The interview was directed by Pierre Andre Boutang and Philippe Collin and was included in an episode from the French television program Cine regards: Bilan du festival de Cannes, which was originally broadcast on May 27th, 1979. In French, with optional English subtitles. (5 min, 1080i).
  • 3. On Location - in this short archival video interview, director Volker Schlöndorff discusses The Tin Drum. The interview was conducted during the shooting of the film. Also included are comments by writer Gunter Grass. The interview was directed by Bernard Volker for the French news program Cinema allemand. It was originally broadcast on January 31, 1979. In French and German, with optional English subtitles. (4 min, 1080i).
  • 4. Post-Palme - archival footage with director Volker Schlöndorff commenting on the success of The Tin Drum shortly after the was awarded the Palme d'Or. The segment was directed by Georges Begou for the French television program Cannes palmares Palme d'Or. It was originally broadcast on May 24, 1979. In French, with optional English subtitles. (1 min, 1080i).
  • Booklet - illustrated booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Atkinson and 1978 statements by Gunter Grass about the adaptation of his novel.

And I don't think people are defending Criterion so much as suggesting you might be overreacting ever so slightly.

I'm just saying...

Thanks for the responses. Perhaps I'll but it in the upcoming sale. Oh and I definetely plan to use the subtitles option. I couldn't understand a word they were saying in the Three Reasons video

It's possible that including the old DVD's supplements (from 'The Tin Drum') on the Blu-ray would have been embarrassing. In those supplements, the director states that he made the cuts that were made. He offered a very good reason for making the cuts: to remain faithful to the novel.

The new 'Tin Drum' is called the "complete cut," because, now, the director has seen fit to un-cut the film. It is now no longer as faithful to the novel as the director's cut that appears on the now out-of-print DVD, if what the director stated in that supplement is true.

I guess not. I thought it was a decent list, anyway.

They'll miss ya. If Criterion hadn't done this release, it might've been Lionsgate or Olive or Kino or one of those..and then what kind of supplements would you have had?

Ok, that's unfair! Resorting to reasonableness and logic on an internet forum and dragging up actual facts to support your argument is just not right!

Wondering about The Third Man. Is the digipack release valued more than the plastic case? Both sealed.
Maybe try OutofPrintBlu-RaySpeculator.com.

I don't think anyone has numbers on how many of each were produced (i.e., which is more "rare"), but plastic cases seem to be more desirable, and since the early Criterion paperboard cases really are rubbish and replacement cases for this title are no longer available...

If they Included the Banned in Oklahoma documentary (30 mins - very good documentary) , and expanded the commentary and included that I would have been satisfied but these are very good extras and people are missing out on some great material if they just have the new Blu and not the older DVD release. Just good material that should have been included for all to enjoy.

So name your top 5 favorite movie distribution companies. I'm just curious. I am guessing Olive Films, Mill Creek Entertainment and Shout! Factory could be some?

Lately, Warner Bros. has put out some fantastic catalog titles.

Sony is usually always good too.

Yes, I remember when we had to buy VHS tapes for our VCRs. We popped the big plastic tape into the machine and pressed "play". The movie came on (after the FBI warning) and then it ended. Nothing else!

I think supplements should be seen as a luxury and we should be grateful for whatever supplements we do obtain.

Sometimes, not knowing so much about a movie elevates it to being more cool and mysterious. Sometimes we shouldn't know every detail into the making of the film. There used to be a time when we used our imagination more. Not anymore though with the internet now. Those days will never come again.

I love all the privilege going on. I see a lot of complaining from that member, if you don't like it, don't buy it. But don't bother us with your problems, because they are exactly that...your problems.

Also, I like pie.

I really hope we don't have to wait another decade for Criterion to add another Hitchcock title to the collection. What do you think we'll see next? I know most speculation leads to some/all of the Hitchcock 9, but I wouldn't mind seeing something from his Hollywood era that hasn't seen a blu-ray release yet.

I already have the MOC release, but I wonder if they'll do Lifeboat eventually?

Hopefully Blackmail. Even while watching the the disc from that cheap multipack Hitchcock DVD set, I could tell it was a gorgeous film.

Foreign Correspondent, Young and Innocent and Sabotage are all up on Amazon Instant so they will probably be the next Hitchcock additions to the collection that we see. I still have my fingers crossed for a release of Under Capricorn that does Jack Cardiff justice.

Pie is much better than cake. Especially cherry pie. And peach pie. And apple pie, and custard crème pie, and chocolate silk pie, and...

And it's even better on March 14th at one minute to two! (Now there's a Criterion clue I'd like to see, but I suppose we'll have to wait on Lionsgate.)

Her comment about gay men being her target demo was obnoxious too.. I'm glad they are a commodity she can use to dump her trash TV upon..?

(I really like Tiny Furniture though!)

Caught To Be or Not To Be on TCM - really interesting movie, I hadn't seen it before. I am a sucker for screwball comedy and though this one felt unusual when paired with something as heavy as World War II. Still, perspective is very different now than it was back then (it was released in 1942). Carole Lombard was great though, all the actors were over-the-top and perfect.

What is obnoxious about making a show for the gay community?
