Wow, how on earth did I not know about this? Well, thanks to the internet, we know everything there is to know about our favorite directors in pre-production.

Amazingly enough, when the new Terrence Malick movie To the Wonder was released, I seriously had no idea about this. It was an incredibly rare surprise. Sometimes I'd like to fall off the face of the planet for a year and come out back to civilization and discover all these great new movies and music albums were released while I was away.

I recently went back and watched The Ice Storm the night before Thanksgiving last year and will make this an annual tradition come Thanksgiving 2013.

You are welcome, iScottie.

Also, I wanted to mention that if you (and everyone else) have not seen Weathering the Storm, which was also inculcated on the Criterion DVD, you should watch the entire documentary (don't skip). Quite illuminating, the best extra on the disc.

Also, guys, if you are in the New York metro area, or visiting, consider seeing L'avventura on the big screen. Opportunities like this one do not come too often

Have a great weekend everyone.

I would really love to attend one of the "L'Avventura" showings in New York. I think it's only a two to three hour train ride to the city for me (as I've only been to the city once). Should I decide to go, I would like to catch a couple other art house style films that are playing as a lot of good films do not often play around here.

Also, is the UK version of "Possession" Region-B locked? I understand that it's coming in the United States soon, but I'm just curious . Also, I'm wondering if "Love Crime" is also Region Locked. I posted a message in the thread a couple weeks ago, but I got no response.

Sorry, iScottie, I did not see your request. Love Crime is Region-B "locked" (I will update the profile now).

Also, we did not get a regular screener so I had to buy it on my own. Will do my best to put up a review in the next 72 hours.

I've found a copy of Le Cercle rouge for $40 plus tax. I really want to get it, as I loved Leon Morin and Le samourai. It's not an ideal price, but at this point I doubt I'll find better. I'm hoping it's still available after I watch Army of Shadows.

However, I will offer a dissenting opinion. I find the original to possess a certain charm, which is somewhat subdued by the elimination of the more "quaint" or "melodramatic" moments in the '42 edit.

From the New York Times:

Thanks for the tip. I'm leaning towards the original, only because the addition 10 or so minutes.

I watched this film years ago on DVD and simply hated it as a pretentious gimmicky POS. It would be interesting to read your review, perhaps I may have been too hasty in forming my opinion
As an aside, the cover art is absolutely gorgeous. They should offer a poster of that.

We are more or less on the same boat. I doubt La Promesse, for example, will be on heavy rotation here, even though it is quite good. The films I watch over and over again are the ones with great visuals, sound design and/or music...Thus, films like Lola Montes, Heavens Gate, Blow Out, Red Desert, Solaris are the ones I rewatch the most. They are all fantastic experiences first and foremost.
Yes, same boat, I noticed I've bought all the ones you singled out, except for Red Desert. I put that one off because I saw it on screen a few years ago and I doubt a bluray will compete with that experience still fresh, and the UK transfer is supposed to be an equally good alternative, so I don't worry as much about it going OOP. I also remember that except for the visuals it left me a bit cold, but it was my first Antonioni, so I wanna give it another chance.

Definitely give it another chance. Without having seen his earlier films- L'Avventura, La Notte and L'Eclisse-you will be thrown in the deep end because I feel that Red Desert builds off of those works, thus creating his fullest expression. I love what Sidney Lumet says in 'Making Movies' about Red Desert, that color and imagery can tell stories alone. He was such a fan of the film that he hired cinematographer Carlo Di Palma to work with him.

Also, Blow Up is a fascinating film too. It was technically the first Antonioni film I saw, and I was left speechless and confused, but I knew I had just seen one of the greatest works of filmic art to be found. We need that film on Region A BluRay ASAP.

If you are a fan of counterculture/ trip-movies, see Zabriskie Point. It's super heavy handed, even quite eye rolling at times, but it's a superb spectacle with a masterful score by Jerry Garcia and Pink Floyd (the BFI bluray of 'More' sits on my shelf unwatched as we speak).

I wish I wouldn't be so up to date with movie news. I'll be googling updates for the next Mann film on a weekly basis. It would be much less stress inducing if it would just land as an unexpected present.

By the way, upon revisiting Badlands, I agree with your assessment that "Middle Malick" is the best with Thin Red Line and The New World occupying the top slot, Days of Heaven and Tree of Life occupying the slot just under (both still perfect films), then the more flawed (in my eyes) Badlands and To the Wonder occupying the bottom slot.

Recently I showed my younger brother Badlands and I think he is more than ready to see the rest that Malick has to offer. I have a strong feeling his jaw is going to drop while watching The Thin Red Line. He has a similar affinity for gorgeous, thoughtful widescreen epics like myself. Also, as a music major, I think he will find much to appreciate in Hanz Zimmer's finest score.

Le Cercle Rouge is my favorite Melville, followed by Army of Shadows and then Leon Morin, Priest.

I'd really recommend getting it while it's still available.

My favorite James Bond movie, and one of my all-time top five movies in general.

A local indie theater is showing all 23 of the James Bond films during July. Sadly, I do not have the finances, the time, or the motivation to go to a theatre a half hour a way from home 23 nights in a row, but I did make a point to buy a ticket to this one, since it's my favorite, and since I've never seen one of the original Sean Connery Bond films on the big screen before.

I want to see if it is indeed a film presentation, as opposed to a digital Blu-ray quality showing. If it is a film showing, then I might catch From Russia with Love the following night. I'm also considering hitting my favorite Roger Moore Bond film, For Your Eyes Only, on July 12, since that's a Friday night.
My favourite Roger Moore film too. Greek women always avenge their dead.
