wanna try some french cinema soon from the criterion or moc collection..

is there a absolutely must have bluray?

so far most of my "classics" are asian movies. (japanese for the biggest part)

but i got some american now at least.. (punishment park, silent running , blow out , for all mankind and will get repo man soon)
Why didn't you wait until B&N sale? if you order six with the cheapest shipping option it works out at around €17 each delivered and no extra customs/VAT either.

A Man Escaped is fantastic, you should get that very tense.

Take a look at Diabolique and The Wages of Fear while you're at it.

If I had to pick one I'd go with Diabolique. The Wages of Fear is fantastic and very suspenseful but I absolutely loved Diabolique. A lot of that is personal taste though - I'm a sucker for a really creepy, moody, atmospheric story.

•Children of Paradise
•Three Colors

Note: I didn't list 400 Blows because I feel that Truffaut made better films in the years to follow.
It's about time Criterion released another Truffaut. Jules et Jim would be very welcome. I wouldn't mind if they released the other Antoine Doinel films either I really love those.

thats only the case for the UK.

in germany i have to pay VAT/TAX for everything above ~22,50GBP.(that would be ~27€... 1 criterion movie while its on amazon sell ends up to be ~21/22€ already including shipping). even for books and all other stuff. and they add shipping costs to that amount too.
cant even order 2 cheap amarays in most cases in one shippment without paying tax.

thats why i have to order every criterion release through amazon seperatly..
and im no B&N member so dont have any gift cards either.

Life of Oharu would end up to be expensiv as well right now

27.97 $ + 6,48 $ shipping + 6,90$ tax = 41.35$ for a single movie ^^

I hope they include the Pauline Kael essay with the set too. Fantastic film.

I raise you Shoot the Piano Player and Day for Night.

Fahrenheit 451 would be a nice surprise, but the book is so much more engaging. It's about time I revisit both anyways.

I've been wanting to see Paris, Texas, but I never made the jump for a blind buy. However the entire film is on YouTube (for those who haven't seen it and are wary of a blind buy). I can honestly say this is one of the very best films I've ever seen. I can't wait until the 7th so I can run over to B&N and pick this baby up. A full on masterpiece.

It sounds like there are some different opinions on the video quality. For example, the dvdbeaver review seems much more positive. I will be picking it someday regardless.

All I know is that it will look better than my really old DVD copy. The Ice Storm is a favorite of mine, so I just hope that I enjoy the presentation.

It will be fine I'm sure, Criterion wont screw us (contrary to some people who complain no matter what on here), it will look better than the DVD.

By the way, upon revisiting Badlands, I agree with your assessment that "Middle Malick" is the best with Thin Red Line and The New World occupying the top slot, Days of Heaven and Tree of Life occupying the slot just under (both still perfect films), then the more flawed (in my eyes) Badlands and To the Wonder occupying the bottom slot.

Recently I showed my younger brother Badlands and I think he is more than ready to see the rest that Malick has to offer. I have a strong feeling his jaw is going to drop while watching The Thin Red Line. He has a similar affinity for gorgeous, thoughtful widescreen epics like myself. Also, as a music major, I think he will find much to appreciate in Hanz Zimmer's finest score.
Very good to see that you agree with me on the middle Malick films being his best. I think after having not made any films for almost 2 decades, the man came out with simply one of the greatest pieces of cinema in history (The Thin Red Line) and he used that newfound inspiration to continue his momentum with The New World. But then the megalomania got the best of him and The Tree of Life was an overambitious project that only led to a more subdued film (To the Wonder). Yes, life caught up to Mr. Malick indeed. But at least we were given 2 superbly moving movies after nearly 2 decades of directorial silence.

I live for unexpected presents.

While I haven't seen Sans Soleil, I've seen La Jetée and it was very enjoyable. I watched it right after seeing 12 Monkeys and it just made the entire thing all the better.

Being 18, a member of the age group that many people (including myself) often consider the worst, I get the irritation that everything needs to have an interpretation or everything needs to have meaning. But being able to discuss interpretations (if you so wish) with people outside of my circle of friends or location. Seeing what other people think of Upstream Color or Bioshock Infinite's ending is rewarding and fascinating, and there are many things that I just choose to have my own thoughts on.

And sometimes I just choose to have my own interpretations of things. For example, I'm never really interested in what others say about "supernatural" film objects (The Great Whatsit, Marcellus' Briefcase, Lancaster Dodd's manuscripts, etc.), and I don't care about the meaning of vague lyrics.

So, I think the transparence of art can be a bad thing if the viewer never has to ask questions, but on the other hand, I do think we'll always have the option to ask questions.

P.S. Speaking of asking questions, I watched Stroszek last night, took a moment to recover, rewatched it with Herzog's commentary, and realized I had very little idea of what the film "meant", and I didn't really care if it meant anything. Excellent film, and one I'd love to see Criterion release someday.
Nice post.
