Gotcha, thanks. Hopefully I do just get the keepcase with the movie.

I received my copy of Pierrot le Fou from Criterion yesterday and while I haven't watched it yet I am very impressed with how well it was packaged. I only ordered the one title and yet it came in a box about 6 times too tall and was full of packaging material to ensure it arrived safely. While I've never had a problem with any shipments from Amazon, Criterion's shipping went above and beyond. This was my first shipment from Criterion and I'm very satisfied with my order.

Blu-ray speculation for older titles continued - Final version.

For Spine #'s 301-449 (the last Spine # released in the pre-Blu era), I'd say the following are more likely to get upgraded:

#306 - Le samuraļ - Rather popular Melville
#309 - Ugetsu - Their most prestigious Mizoguchi
#330 - Au revoir les enfants - In amazon.com poll
#374 - Bicycle Thieves - Prominent de Sica; an international film staple
#385 - Army of Shadows - If Rialto licensed outright (no Studio Canal); most prestigious Melville
#408 - Breathless - Prominent Godard; European Blus already available

And the following have little or no chance (not counting already OOP titles):

#325 - Kind Hearts and Coronets - Most likely Studio Canal licensed
#336 - Dazed and Confused - Universal likely to keep for themselves
#369-373 - Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist - Studio Canal licensed title within set
#385 - Army of Shadows - If Studio Canal licensed (through Rialto)
#411 - Berlin Alexanderplatz - Simply too long a film

There are lots of films I would want from this section of the collection on Blu (#432 Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, #378 Fires on the Plain, #335 Elevator to the Gallows, to name just a few), but I'm not sure of their chops for an HD re-release. And then the other more obvious titles are already out.

Thoughts?

I believe Breathless is going to be a 2011 release by Criterion (saw on Criterionforum that they said it on their facebook page) and makes sense with the new print's theatrical rerelease about to make it's way through the summer.

My latest shipment of 8 Criterions came in the mail today. Most of them blind buys. Watching Days of Heaven now. So far it's very good. Amazing picture quality.

From The Current:

Quote:
COMING SOON: TWO RARE ANTONIONI SHORTS

We’re excited to tell you that we’ve officially added two early Michelangelo Antonioni documentary shorts, Gente del Po and N.U., to our upcoming release of Red Desert in Blu-ray and DVD editions. The films, both of which focus on the daily lives of working people, were made in the forties and are rarely shown. In Gente del Po, Antonioni takes a barge trip down the river Po; N.U. documents the lives of street cleaners in Rome. Look for Red Desert this June.
Even more reason to love it now!

Has anyone had any trouble playing Days of Heaven? I saw there was one other poster a few pages back that had trouble, but other than that a search of this thread turned up nothing. It locked up on me around the 49 minute mark, between chapters 13 and 14.

No problems for me, on my PS3. There's a thread about this though, that may be of some help.

Thanks, I'll be keeping an eye on that thread to see what new information pops up. In the mean time, I think I'll get a replacement tomorrow to see if maybe I just got a bad disc.

It's really too bad as I was enjoying the film quite a bit. Their were so many breath-taking scenes. So far I'm enjoying Days of Heaven much more than I did The New World.

Anyone had trouble with Repulsion on their player? The sound won't go up or down n my PS3! It's like it is fixed at a certain level. This doesn't happen with any of my other Blu-Rays.

EDIT - Nevermind. It seems that all of my Blu-Rays are doing the same thing now. The Onkyo receiver remote sound adjustment isn't working. Sound is stuck at the same level on my PS3 for movies. Weird.

Have you tried adjusting the volume at the receiver itself?

Yes, I can turn the receiver volume to zero and it's the same level as sound maxxed out.

I've never heard of that issue. Perhaps sending an email to Onkyo's customer support would be helpful. Either way keep me posted on how this works out.

Not bluray related, but the hollywood video in my town is now closing up shop and i nabbed quite a few oldies for super cheap:

3-The Lady Vanishes (original cover art)
4-Amacord (original cover art)
44-The Red Shoes
143-That Obscure Object of Desire
234-The Tin Drum

Got all of those plus another film for my gf for $40. Not too shabby.

I disagree with you about "Berlin Alexanderplatz" being too long to release on Blu-ray. We already have a number of miniseries on blu plus some long-running, multiseason TV shows. If those can be released on Blu-ray, then Berlin Alexanderplatz can as well. As the format grows more established and more titles are released, I expect more mega-sets on blu from all the studios, including Criterion.

I do agree with you on "Bicycle Thieves" and I hope it's soon. That film would look excellent on Criterion Blu.

The company did a wonderful job with Days of Heaven, a film I'd seen previously and loved. The only quip I have is that the theatrical trailer wasn't included.

What other titles did you order?

Am I alone in wishing for Criterion to grant David Gordon Green's "George Washington" the upgrade from DVD to BD? If Criterion truly does have Malick's "The Thin Red Line" on its upcoming BD slate, then "George Washington" would be a superb companion release.

Well, I'd still say it's unlikely anytime soon, if not the near impossibility I implied earlier.
