I hope everybody considers acquiring it during the sale
yeah, it's definitely self-indulgent, and that has its downsides, but it's also part of what I like about Heaven's Gate - the unabashed scope and ambition of the thing, the details to which Cimino went to recreate the authenticity of the sets and all. The extra features on the package are great, Cimino and collaborators talking about the extensive (and indulgent) production process.

But my favorite part of the movie has to be the soundtrack, the music is so great - and the roller skating/dance scene, along with the amazing shots of the huddled masses trekking West, are two of my favorites scenes in any movie.

The coupons are a disaster, yet again. My $8 coupon that was *emailed* to me was "not on file." The cashier insisted that they were "smart" coupons, and that after being used once, they deactivate. I do not think that is the case, as I see people passing them around on here. Regardless, I specifically signed up for my membership at an opportune time to ensure I had valid, non-expired coupons for this sale.

The next hurdle was the fact that you can only use any of the coupons once, regardless as to how many you have. So I just went with it. I still didn't make out too bad; according to my receipts (four transactions):

Solaris - $16.33
Wild Strawberries - $16.74
Paris, Texas - $11.99
Kiss Me Deadly - $19.99
Revanche - $16.32
Sansho the Bailiff $16.32
Breathless $16.74
Three Colors Trilogy $33.49
Shoah - $36.99

All plus tax.

Default Summertime

For those of you holding out hope to see Summertime get a blu release, Yesasia.com has the Japanese version (region A) for $26.75 with free shipping. Although not a Criterion release, the transfer looks like an upgrade to me (DVDBeaver did a shot comparison between the Criterion DVD release with this Japanese release here). You will notice that the BD shots look a lot warmer with more shadow detail.

I could use some help in deciding which titles to get during this sale. I can only get 8 and I'm for sure getting Tokyo Drifter, Diabolique, Lord of the Flies, and Fish Tank. What other 4 should I get out of these titles

The Double Life of Veronique
Crumb
The Life and Death of Colonial Blimp
Mystery Train
Down by Law
Sansho the Baileff
Black Narcissus
The Life of Oharu

Thanks to everyone who helps in advance!!

I admittedly have not see any of the above-listed picks except for The Double Life of Veronique (and this film is awesome), but these would be my choices if I had to choose four based on my knowledge of the films.

So pumped to go today and pick up some titles! There are so many choices but I definitely want to pick up Shoah, that film looks exceptional.

What are people's thoughts on The Gold Rush vs. Modern Times? I'm thinking I need to own a Chaplin film in my library.

I'm upgrading my old DVDs of The Gold Rush, Modern Times, and The Great Dictator today when I stop by Barnes & Noble.

If I had to recommend only one, I'd recommend Modern Times. That movie is a trip.

I haven't seen The Gold Rush (I own it; will get to it soon enough), but you really can't go wrong with Modern Times. My favorite Chaplin from what I've seen.

The Gold Rush is the one to start with, in my opinion. However, I enjoy all 4 of his films in the collection, with the talkies being my favorite.

I prefer The Gold Rush by a slight margin, so I'd say to start with that one. They're both fantastic films.

Black Narcissus

I respect those who are fans of this film but personally, I think you and I just took the viewing experience too seriously and that contributed to the somewhat unpleasant experience. Worth giving it another shot when you don't want to pay attention.
It looked good (most of the shots at least), but yeah, I agree that I took it too serious almost. I think for me it wasnt bad enough to be "good", but it also wasnt....good enough to be good, lol. I think I was expecting something more along the lines of The Atomic Submarine.

For now i'll get some Criterions from B&N and then some more before the sale ends.

I need your opinion... between these 3 foreign films - which one do you think is the best.

Fellini's 8½
Breathless
Summer Interlude

That's a difficult one, but I'd pick Breathless for you, just because it's a great starting point to many other foreign films of the time (sorry, I'm assuming you haven't seen any of those 3)
