I think it would have been a perfect film had Peter Lorre been the villain in the Jimmy Stewart version...but that's just me.

Far from my favorite Criterion (not knocking it, mind you, I'm very glad to have it) but I'm pretty sure it's my favorite case.

Also, keep on the lookout for A Matter of Life and Death on channels like TCM.
A Matter of Life and Death was re-released on Region 1 DVD, much better than the R2 Carlton Edition

And like a lot of other Hitchcock films, you have to take this one on its own terms. The story doesn't really make a lot of sense. It's not a modern, realistic drama. It's a showcase for interesting characters, interesting situations, fun dialogue and some pretty cool visuals.

I'm not a huge fan of early Hitchcock but I've warmed up to them quite a bit over the years.

I think the Stewart version tries too hard at times. Everything is a little too self-consciously 'big'. This one seems more comfortable in its own skin.

Maybe this is largely a function of my own expectations but the first one has a certain charm that's lacking in the remake.
Yeah the scale of his early films is something I was disappointed in when i start from the 50s/60s then worked through his filmography in reverse chronological order. However, the expert visual execution is still there. Sure, it's simpler and not coupled with an overpowering Bernard Herman score, but still effective.

It's too bad in still showing my little brother the "Big Hitchcock films", thus it will be a while until we get to said Jimmy Stewart version.

Thanks David! I will definitely keep that in mind if I get too impatient waiting for the BluRay.

Barnes & Noble My Barnes & Noble haul for July 9, 2013

Here is my haul for today.

Shoah - $36.99 (+ tax)
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - $16.32 (+ tax)
Life is Sweet - $16.32 (+ tax)
Howards End - $16.33 (+ tax)

Howards End is of course OOP now!

I used the $8 coupon for Shoah and for the other 3 I bought in a separate transaction using the $5 coupon. Both of course had my 10% member discount too. Not a bad day!

Check out my photo below!

Snagged On the Waterfront today and picking up Howard's End tomorrow (had some trouble finding a store that had it [but not on hold], but finally prevailed!).

Also, after long deliberation, I decided to sell my copy of Fanny and Alexander. I just couldn't get into it. No matter how hard I tried.

I prefer the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much, but neither are Hitchcock's best works.

There's great stuff in both though.

I want to call this my final list but I keep switching out titles:

Brazil
Godzilla
M
Island of Lost Souls
Safety Last

I think I'm going to wait on Solaris. No particular reason as to why (although I could swap Safety Last for that but I kinda want to get a silent film). How is Island of Lost Souls?

I don't want to spend too much because of all the horror titles coming out and Criterion's potential Cronenberg films.

Definitely rent before you buy. Even Robinson Crusoe on Mars is a safer blindbuy.

La Promesse, Rosetta,The Kid With the Bike...And thoughts on these?

I havent heard much if anything at all lately or at all about these movies but they seem very well received and the director has 3 in the CC.

Would Letter Never Sent be considered an adventure film? Sorry if this is too vague of a question, but I have read different opinions on this at various places, and thought you Criterion aficionados might have some input.

I wouldn't say that, no. Maybe there's some elements there, but that gives the wrong impression, in my opinion.

In a way, yes. Adventure/ survival.

It's worth every penny of those $15. As a matter of fact, there isn't a weak film in the group of cheaper releases.

just watched 12 angry men and I have to say that one was a doozy. really good movie. I don't even want to put anything else in the player bc it will just be a massive let down after watching that.
