After all my asking about it and deciding to skip Shoah due to lack of interest...I went ahead and ordered it for $42 anyway..

Sigh...I'm weak..

Stopped by my local B&N earlier and grabbed: Shoah, Heaven's Gate, Safety Last!, High and Low, and Weekend (Godard). Wanted to get Harakiri but their copy was damaged with the wrapping half torn off and the corner scuffed, so I passed. Also wanted to grab Life of Oharu and Naked Lunch but neither was in stock, to the relief of my wallet.

If I had a coupon I'd totally be all over Shoah. lol. If I get a couple more gigs this month i'll definitely purchase it.

I did, however, end up getting Things To Come, Safety Last, and Cronos.

also, re: Dardennes, I think they are up there with the most important directors working today, and their three Criterion releases to date are beautiful and essential. I'd give my highest recommendation to pick those up. For me it's a tie between Rosetta and Le Enfant for the masterpiece status. Oddly enough Le Fils is the only one I've not been crazy about.

My haul today was pretty nice. A bunch of blind buys and an upgrade. Picked up:

La promesse
The Killing
M
Rules of the Game
Children of Paradise
Beauty and the Beast
Red Desert (almost entire because of Andrew's enthusiasm and I feel our tastes line up well)
Chantal Akerman Eclipse set.

Hoping to pick up Night of the Hunter online, because the copy in store was busted up something unpleasant.

I find that last statement crazy. Mind you, I view L'enfant as their second weakest, only behind Lorna. Still a stunning work though, mind you.

It's been some time since I watched Le fils and I could definitely stand to see it again, but I seem to remember it being the sole instance in their work of the Catholic/religious parable elements really feeling too on-the-nose to the point where it overwhelms the drama. I remember reading an interview where they talked about deleting a scene with overt cross symbolism in the climax because it was just too much, but I think that feeling is pretty prevalent in the latter half anyway. I didn't dislike it or anything, but it didn't give me the kind of visceral catharsis that I normally experience with their work.

Obviously it is still full of great stuff, Gourmet's performance in particular is one of the strongest in any of their movies.

I think Shoah is the hottest seller according to everyone on this forum. I'm noticing a lot of people buying it or adding it to their carts (including me). I am not sure how I am going to watch this 9 hour film, but it will probably be in 3 parts (3 hours each).

How is everyone else going to watch Shoah?

Is anyone going to attempt to watch the whole 9 hour film without interruption?

I believe it is split up into two roughly 4 1/2 hour parts? I will probably attempt to watch it over two nights, one part each night.

Hey, its Orson Welles! and not many people know or talk about that movie. Totally obscure is totally cool.

It's just so funny. Har har har.

Here's a brief reccomendation for Shoah (originally aired on Ebert Presents)

for shoah
each disc has 2 parts, disc 1 has pt 1 which is 2.5 hours and part 2 which is 2 hours
the 2nd disc also has a pt 1 and pt 2 but not sure how long they are but the 3rd disc is all the bonus films

i am watching a part a night on disc 1 and the same with 2

not sure if i would blind buy this unless i was 100% sure i liked it since its not really a movie, more a documentary
i like it though so its all good

Thanks for this information.

I just read a lot more about this Blu-ray release and learned about the 3 disc organization. I definitely am going to watch 1 part a night for 3 consecutive nights and then the 4th night I will try and watch all of the other 3 films that total around 3.5 hours. If I can't make it through all 3 of the extra films I will leave a 5th night open for whatever there is left to watch.

Basically it should take about 4-5 days for me to get through the Shoah release. It will be a very sobering and life-changing week for me no doubt with Shoah on my mind.

After all of the reviews I read, this is probably the most important documentary film ever made. And this I cannot question whatsoever. To me, this film is a time capsule or living history, so if someday my government takes away libraries and the internet, I still hope to have this movie in my possession so I can remind people 50 years from now that the unspeakable once happened in human history.

Don't forget Marcel Ophuls' THE SORROW AND THE PITY and MEMORIES OF JUSTICE, among others. These two are must-sees, although sadly not yet on Blu.

Yeah, but then you'll have to recite it from memory, like the folks from Fahrenheit 451.

Okay, I need some help in narrowing some choices down.

Out of the following:

Gate of Hell
Jubal
Letter Never Sent
The Makioka Sisters
The Moment of Truth
The Organizer
Three Outlaw Samurai

Which would you get if you could get only 1?
And if you could chose 5, which would you get?

Thanks!

Or maybe it will become a bible of sorts, like in the movie The Book of Eli.

One? Easy! GATE OF HELL if you're more into classics or THE MAKIOKA SISTERS if you lean more towards relatively recent cinema.

Five? JUBAL, LETTER NEVER SENT, and the three Japanese titles.

If you haven't yet got them, look at a bunch of Criterion's other Japanese films, especially Kurosawa, but also Suzuki, Ozu, Mizoguchi, and others.
