yeah, some days I think Harlan County is one of my absolute favorite movies, in my top five or ten, it's so great, so moving.

No offense to the man (I love his films), but that sounds a bit pretentious. Almost like, "I think my work speaks for itself", "it means whatever you want it to mean."

I think it's fairly clear what the film is all about when all is said and done (the puppeteer conclusion). It's not like it's Inland Empire or Red Psalm or anything like that.

At 80 minutes, It's atleast worth a rental. I may have to do a full write up the next time I see it.

. And Just putting it out there: I have an extra copy I'd like to let go to someone who would enjoy it.

There's a lot there. I've watched it twice and sampled a couple of the supplements and I missed a lot the first time around and there's a lot I still haven't noticed.

But there were no big 'aha, now I get it' epiphanies. They were more of the 'oh yeah, how did I miss that' variety.

Care to offer an explanation on what you think it means? I feel like it should be so simple.
[Show spoiler]The puppeteer wanting to write his novel is the main story in the film and that the whole double life thing is just coincidence.
But the more I think about it, the more I think there's something more that I'm missing.

It's horrific. The dialogue is absolute trash, on top of everything else.

I'm always distracted by Irène Jacob, and I miss some of the subtleties.

I really need to upgrade this one to Blu-ray. I'm planning to unload a lot of my remaining DVDs next week and use the money to grab some more titles during the sale. If I do this, then The Double Life of Veronique and the Three Colors trilogy are candidates.

(Minor spoils for Double Life ahead)

I guess I think it's simple because the metaphysics are all on the surface, laid bare for all to see.

The connection between Weronica and Veronique is a gimme. The interconnectedness story that has been very popular in the last two decades.

The puppeteer conclusion is definitely much more abstract. But the swirl of emotions I felt during were palpable. It touches on the possibilities of the existence of a creator and a cruelly deterministic universe (the great contrast between the political environments both women inhabit, one free, one not as much). It's a defined ambiguity (the mystery of existence, chance, faith), rather than something just flat out perplexing.

Just in case any of you are currently hunting for new avatars, the Criterion website has posted the drawings from the Lord of the Flies artwork.

I didn't think of it that way but that could be a possibility.

I don't know. At this point, I still like White and Red a lot better. I'd rank this slightly on par with Blue.

I enjoyed Savages very much. The reaction from the audience over the
[Show spoiler]rewinded denouement
was priceless. Stone's best film in years.

"I had orgasms, he had wargasms."

That's my favorite Stone film (although I haven't seen many) and it was one of my Top 5 from last year.

Saw it at the theaters and LOVED it. Such an entertaining film. Regarding the Director's Cut, it's a few newer scenes. I'm not quite sure if there's any more action or not, though.

Well, it's the only version of the film that I've seen, but a couple of the scenes that they added in were stand-outs for me:

But yeah, the movie is definitely divisive. I watched it in a group of about five people: two really enjoyed it, three hated it.

I thought for sure you would hate it but its a full ten minutes or so longer. Must change the pace a bit.

Thanks for the link. I'll take it into account when I revisit it this year. Need. A. Price. Drop. Soon.
