I definitely need to revisit it, and until I do I couldn't say where I would rank it. I loved it, though, and I appreciated how relevant it is to contemporary times.

It's honestly just some deleted scenes with Salma Hayek's character. I can't remember it since I haven't watched it since it came out on Blu-ray.

I absolutely love it, though, and I think the ending worked out great.

I don't get what's pretentious about it (really hate that word, especially when it comes to film.) It's a good way of putting his later work. If you try to describe Veronique, it just sounds... well, silly. But you need to watch it in order to really get it.

Yeah, almost everything about it is trash, and not the good kind. It's the kind of low a filmmaker reaches where I have no intention on seeing any of their new work from hereon-out.

Having Grown up in an art studio, I'm just really sensitive to the way artists define their work, the vibe that gives. Words can be a bit limiting sometimes, so yeah, defining Double Life of Veronique will only set you up for failure. Great film, though. My absolute favorite Kieslowski.

Me too. My favorite film ever.

Also, I agree, it's really hard to define Veronique. On the surface, the plot sounds a bit intriguing, but until you experience it first hand, you won't appreciate it as much!

By the way, all Gallo fans should check out Essential Killing. Great atmospheric thriller kind of like Le Samourai & The American.
I should expound and let you know the Blu-ray quality of that Japanese issue is remarkable. It is hard to improve upon the quality of the visual and audio presentation. Here is a great BD review I found actually: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/misc/buffalo_66.htm

I have to check out Essential Killing too. I recently bought Coppola's Tetro on BD and Gallo is superb in that too. I think it was the very last BD in Barnes & Noble's stock at the time (in any store). I had to get it shipped to me.

What are your various avatars from? They seem to be from the same film.

EDIT: Never-mind. Miami Vice.

While I don't want to rub anyone the wrong way, I can't consider people like Gallo or Korine as genuine, bona fide artists. One of the by products of the Independent boom of the 90s was the pseudo auteur who could get a movie made full of artistic posturing but lacking any actual substance or originality.

Gallo and Korine both make movies that you could see in any film class. The only real difference being the presence of genuinely talented actors like Chloe Sevigny or Ben Gazzara or Christina Ricci or Werner Herzog. These actors do what heavy lifting there is, while the rest of the movies are mostly artifice.

I haven't seen Spring Breakers, but I can't believe that it would get anything close to the attention it gets if it didn't feature hypersexed versions of Disney Channel jailbait. Stunt casting and real time blowies aside, these two guys just don't have much going in the substance department.

From my seat, at least.

Thanks for the link. Those screen caps look astounding, Safe Place.

You need to see Essential Killing ASAP. It made my best of list from 2010 or 2009. Just really remarkable on a visual level. Not necessarily eye popping, more very assured visual storytelling. The whole film is nearly dialogue free.

Wow, that is pretty much spot on from my perspective as well. Kudos!

I'm shocked I didn't leave when I heard that line. Had it not been for Dark Shadows, Savages would have been my least favorite film of 2012.

I thought the line was ridiculously great. I almost squealed with joy upon hearing it.

You need to see more movies then, there were much, much worse films in 2012. Hell, there were worse films the weekend Savages hit theatres.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a film I disliked more. Although I don't seek out films that I know I'll dislike. There was Les Mis... No, I think Savages takes the cake.

EDIT: And yes, that line is what really made me roll my eyes.

You can't deny that Les Mis was inferior to Savages on a visual and sonic level.

I got Still Walking and The Sword of Doom on the way.

Does anyone know why on Criterion's site there is no mention of the White Mane/Red Balloon release but only the singles/separate editions of the two films and the film collection that has all three films with it White Mane/Red Balloon/ Paddle to the Sea.

Also Are there any other Kor-eda movies that have been released in the US through Criterion or something else. I've only seen Morobsi but wish Criterion had that and do a nice BD of it.

Sonically? Sure. Visually? I don't know. I'd probably give the edge to Les Mis.

Everything else you said was an opinion, but that particular word was factually wrong.
