I'm probably one of the few fans here of The Last Days of Disco. She and Chloe Sevigny are great in that Stillman film.

Great choice! I know you immediately encountered some disagreement from other members, but Amarcord is Fellini's greatest film (even in comparison with 8 1/2) and it is one of his most accessible films (along with La Strada). It is Fellini's most personal film, in many ways autobiographical as the director fondly recalls the four seasons as they pass through a small Italian village. It features a wonderful score by Nino Rota and an amazing cast of zany characters that is so typical of Fellini. It was lauded by critics and it won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. You won't regret your purchase for a minute.

I sold a lot of lowbrow comedies (Road Trip, Old School, Office Space, Varsity Blues, Son in Law, Wedding Crashers, Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Eurotrip, etc.) when I did the massive streamlining of my DVD collection earlier this year to finance my accrual of Blu-rays. I may or may not ever get around to replacing these on Blu-ray. The prices are pretty low for all of these when I've seen the Blu-rays in stores, but I'm just not in a big hurry to replace them. Not out of pseudo-snobbiness or anything like that. I'm just over a lot of those movies. My friends and I probably watched Office Space a thousand times during the past 15 years, for example, and I can recall every still frame of that movie from memory, but I'm sort of worn out when it comes to revisiting it. I might actually upgrade Eurotrip if it ever comes out on Blu-ray. That movie gets me cracking up whenever I see it, even moreso than the others that I've mentioned above. It's not exactly a huge priority, though. It's not that I'm averse to buying comedies on Blu-ray. I upgraded Ghostbusters, National Lampoon's Vacation, City Slickers, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and a few others to Blu-ray as soon as I possibly could. I'm just sort of burned out on the lowbrow comedies of the past couple of decades right now. I'll probably get nostalgic for these films in a few years, I'm sure. Why I'm posting this in the Criterion thread, I do not know. |

We're all hoping that the films come out soon. I'd like to see all of the early Cronenbergs in one box set, but we've only seen cover art hints for The Brood and Scanners. Maybe Criterion will just release those in separate singe-disc packages. |

I'm a big fan of this movie too. Also Juliet of the Spirits, which goes equally un-noted. The colors in the latter would make it seem like a natural for upgrade, but surely they'll blugrade any Fellini they can eventually. Hope so.

Anyone that has a dislike for 8 1/2 needs to watch Fellini's earlier work, before he veers into his surrealistic period. It gives you an understanding of the man and his gradual growth in style. Once you watch 8 1/2 again, you'll wonder what the hell it was you found so tedious and bizarre in the first place.

In all fairness, I have not seen any of the Stillman films. They don't seem like my personal can of worms at first glance, but Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny are both great, and The Last Days of Disco got a lot of attention during my college years.

Glad to know that there are people waiting for Criterion to release some Cronenberg. Hoping to see Shivers and Rabid along with The Brood and Scanners and hopefully The Dead Zone. |

Just watched The Kid With a Bike.
What a wonderful movie all around. It was kind of predictable, but that's not the point. It was so very very very well executed. I'm not sure if I loved the movie because of the great storytelling, or if it's because I kept enjoying looking at Cecile De France. The continuous bike ride scene that went on for about a minute reminded me so much of Antoine's last run to the coast in 400 Blows. Albeit, it was under different circumstances, you just watch the scene go on and on and it makes you think deeper into what each character must've been thinking at that very moment. |
