Hey, Snicket! Long time no see.

EDIT: I just read his Top Ten, so I guess that there actually is a way on Earth that Refn did not pick Le Samouraï as one of his Top Ten.
Refn claimed he had never seen the Melville film.

By the way, I was at the doctor's office earlier this evening for my annual physical, and I thought of you people.

When you choose a physician, be sure to ask whether or not he or she uses Criterion surgical gloves. Accept no substitute.

Yes, a fun film. Too bad Disney marketed it so poorly.

I can't wait until they announce their new sizes/colors...I'm hoping clear medium-large for the next one.

Remotely related, and possibly influential as well, but I cheated on Criterion recently by pre-ordering The Driver from Twilight Time. I've always wanted to see that film. It should be at my doorstep in a couple of weeks.

Nope. A clean bill of health. My blood pressure is lower than it's ever been, and all of my preliminary readings are quite good. I'm reverse-aging, sort of like Benjamin Button. Physicals still make me nervous, though.

I have to see Bound again. I only saw it once a long, long time ago. Erotic thrillers are titillating but I'm not crazy about them. The Last Seduction was good though. Lots of sex scenes in there.

And even with the pink dreadlocks, Lana/Lola still looks more like a "Larry" than most Larrys have a right to, including Larry King, Larry David, Larry Flynt, Larry Tate, and Leisure Suit Larry.

And now that it's all about "Personal expression", we're probably going to get more things along the line of Cloud Atlas ("It's all about who you WANT to be; you don't have to be black or Asian to play a black or Asian character!"), than anything with, oh, say, boring old story coherence like Establishment society forces on movies.
Yes, indeed. I think now with digital technology and CGI, any director can now make an old man look like a young man (as in the example of the recent TRON: Legacy film where Jeff Bridges was digitally enhanced to look about 30 years younger). Larry will never be Lana to me, cause he still isn't 100% female. I think though there are exceptions. Some female actresses really can pull off playing a male character. Two perfect examples are Hillary Swank in Boys Don't Cry and Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There. In the latter case, Blanchett was the best Bob Dylan character in any movie and it was a female playing him. That is just pure skill and acting talent as opposed to digital manipulation of making a man a woman or vice versa in a film. There is really nothing brilliant about digital manipulation because if anyone can do it with today's technology, what makes it so great?

Speaking of good news, my UK edition of Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection arrived today in perfect condition!

Saboteur / Shadow of a Doubt / Rope / Rear Window / The Trouble with Harry / The Man Who Knew Too Much / Vertigo / Psycho / The Birds / Marnie / Torn Curtain / Topaz / Frenzy / Family Plot

(I already own a stand-alone copy of North by Northwest.)

As always when I purchase multiple Blu-rays at once, I'll be following my policy of picking the Blu-ray that I'm least excited to watch, and watching it first, so it looks like I'll be starting this set off with Family Plot.

Love erotic thrillers. They are my bag.

Can anyone recommend some obscure but great erotic thrillers for me?

I would hardly call Bound an "erotic thriller". Yes there's a little girl-on-girl action but it's more of a neo-noir film than anything.

Barnes & Noble My Barnes & Noble haul for July 18, 2013

MY 4TH HAUL!

And I got the 15% coupon to work in the store!

I was shot down by the CSR for trying an $8 coupon on Night of the Hunter. I told him I successfully used this at other stores on $49.99 titles, but he did not want to hear anything. He even called the manager and got his way. HOWEVER, I did ask him if he could at least try the 15% coupon I had received in my email today and he did! Though I could have saved another $4-5, I'm ok with this. I was successful with the coupon.

Here are the titles:

Night of the Hunter (BD) ($19.12 + tax) (15% Coupon + 10% discount)
Marketa Lazarova (BD) ($16.32 + tax) ($5 Coupon + 10% discount)
In the Mood for Love (BD) ($16.32 + tax) ($5 Coupon + 10% discount)
Safety Last (BD) ($16.33 + tax) ($5 Coupon + 10% discount)

Here is my accompanying picture.

Okay, people can think what they like, but why don't you whip something up for us?

I don't care who likes Cloud Atlas, but there is some really nice stuff in it, even if it will probably go down as an interested 'not-quite' of a movie. It isn't like you are sitting through ten Cloud Atlases a year. Mark Webb isn't rebooting it next year or anything.

If you ask me, Cloud Atlas' main flaw was trying to be as accessible as they attempted to make it. It is also weirdly, visually dull considering the pedigree of the directors.

I'd also ask you to chill it with the Lana/Larry stuff unless you have anything approaching insight to relate.

I have to agree about making personal attacks on a filmmaker for his or her gender or sexuality, or how he or she chooses to express them. Not only is potentially offensive to many people on here, it also violates the forum rules.

I am all for digressions, but this is one case where I have to say "let's keep things on topic."
