Over at the HTF, a credible source is saying both TOOTSIE and THE BIG CHILL are in the works from Criterion.

The creativity was fantastic though with whatever "sci-fi" there was in the film. The movie is about relationships first and foremost and I could actually relate to the main male character as a person who has drifted around, never meeting the right woman (though I'm not quite the "player" he was with all those flings, unless you can count my 20s). It's a great exploration of the needs of men and women and the miscommunication that comes from meaningless sex and relationships. If I were you, Great Owl, I would buy this film, especially if you like 80s new wave/post punk music. Though the music didn't dominate the film by any means, the selections used and placement in the film were very effective. It's a cool flick.
Thanks!

I just reserved a copy at Barnes & Noble to pick up after work. It'll cost me less than $15, so I can't go wrong.

Imagine if that movie was released on Criterion? One of life's greatest films on life's greatest movie distributor. Nevertheless, we must RESPECT the CLOCK of time and not be cocky about our timers.

Ti West on the other hand, imho, is great. I loved both House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers. His sequence of V/H/S was about the most interesting, though not great. His part of The ABCs Of Death was disappointing however though in all fairness, most of that film was pretty crap.
I dislike James Wan's films too. His last two have done nothing for me. Ti West's House of the Devil, on the other hand, is one of my five favorite horror films of the aughts. The film is drenched in atmosphere, yet it has a devilish sense of humor.

Just for fun, my favorite horror films of the 2000s, off the top of my head...

1. Kairo (Pulse)
2. The Mist
3. [Rec]
4. The Strangers
5. 28 Days Later

For me, horror movies are like pizza, in that even the bad ones are pretty good at the time, but none of them are particularly memorable or particularly good for me, except for the rare occasional gourmet offering.

Would be the other four choices, I think.

I could have easily included Let the Right One In or The Descent on my list. In fact, Let the Right One In could probably replace 28 Days Later or The Strangers.

I did not like the American remake, Let Me In, at all. The movie was too dark. No, really, I mean it was literally too dark. I could not tell what was going on most of the time because of the darkened cinematography.

Hmmm....? Maybe you had the Tv's energy saver feature on?

(I have only seen it theatrically)

Funnily enough, I actually did double-check my TV settings when I rented the movie, but it turns out that the movie was actually too dark.

Oy vey, I may need to watch my copy soon to confirm this.

Do you watch movies with the light on, by any chance?

Nope. I watch everything with the lights out.

I'm exaggerating about not being able to see what was going on during Let Me In, but it really does have a dark look about it that took my mind out of the story.

Hmm. Maybe the fact that it was filmed in New Mexico added a recognizable sense of place for me. It overcame the darkness factor.

The Big Chill is okay...but I would prefer The Accidental Tourist.

This was recently discussed on the Criterion forums too. I don't remember the exact details, but I think there was something about Criterion getting the rights to The Big Chill if they agreed to release Tootsie.

Also, in a recent interview with Paul Schrader on film.com he mentioned that Mishima will be upgraded once the current packaging sells out.

I have sort of a "meh" reaction to the predictions about Tootsie and The Big Chill. This may change when the releases actually happen.

The hint about Nashville quickened my pulse a lot more.

Never seen The Big Chill, but if they released Tootsie, that would be amazing.

If Criterion is going to release a Lawrence Kasdan film, I'd love to see Silverado again. Body Heat might be more up my alley these days, though.

Would love to see a "Hideo Gosha" Eclipse Set ... maybe with the 2 "Samurai Wolf" movies ... "Violent Streets" and "The Wolves".
