Edit: I know Pay-pal sent them 2 payments; that's one of the reasons I've been trying to get ahold of them. Anyone have a phone number?

A phone number for Criterion has been posted a few times in this thread. I suggest using the Search function for "phone number" or something along those lines.

The Larisa Shepitko Eclipse Series release was delightful... I hope Criterion releases one for Elem Klimov or even considers a film like "Come and See" for Blu-ray.

For those of you salivating and waiting for Seven Samurai (such as myself) I read an article a couple moths ago stating that Criterion is working on it. They could have released it around the time of Yojimbo and Sanjuro, but they said they are putting so much care and work into it because they want the transfer to be as close to perfect as it can get. They believe it will be out by the end of the year.

Come and See would be a great addition to Criterion. I would eat it up and so would a bunch of others I know that love that film.

Yeah, we all read about that from Criterion's site. They had hoped to put it out for AK's 100th birthday, but they wanted to fine-tune things more and that's fine by me. Seven Samurain is one of the most important parts of the Collection, not just from a historical/cinematic perspective, but also a financial one, as I have no doubt that the title is one of Criterion's all-time bestsellers.

OK, it's a Saturday and I'm bored. I wanted to ask the thread:

1. What was your very first Criterion title (in any edition or format)?

2. What is your favorite Criterion title (e.g. the Criterion DVD that you wouldn't sell/trade until you had the Blu-ray edition in your hands)?

Mine:

1. I started collecting the DVDs several years ago, but wow, I don't actually remember. I think it was either Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or The Royal Tenenbaums.

2. The Criterion release I will treasure is the Fanny & Alexander Box Set. I absolutely love the 5-hour version of the film. Sadly, it's been in storage for some time and I never got to the extras! But soon that will change...

1. RoboCop on DVD

2. Mine is Insomnia. It's a wonderful movie, and I have it signed by the director.

Super Cop (LD)

That's a hard one... Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales boxset.

As I've stated before, my first Criterion release on any format was their first DVD release of "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom" when it came out back in 1998. Before the introduction of DVD to the USA in 1997/1998, I was unfamiliar with The Criterion Collection and its laserdiscs. Being born in 1977, I was too young to financially afford or even care about the laserdisc format. I did drool over a few laserdisc box sets such as "Rocky Horror Picture Show," though, when I would see them in the stores. However, I was much more interested in buying up hard-to-find and out-of-print VHS movies at the time.

The one Criterion DVD title I'll forever hang onto will be their release of "Nights Of Cabiria." Giulietta Masina's performance lingers with me daily because I have her image from the film's poster as the wallpaper on my cell phone.

mcrutchy,

1. i don't remember honestly. i always wanted LD and if i got that i may have gotten Criterion on LD. but DVDs came out. i was never a very serious DVD collector cause i've always known hi-def media was coming. i've been waiting for hi-def media since early 90s! i think i ballooned to 80-100 DVDs at 1 point... but there was a lot of buying and selling and giving away as well for titles i never watched. i'm pretty sure i never owned any Criterion titles on DVD. on Blu-Ray it was probably the 1st batches released: Bottle Rocket, Last Emperor, Kagemusha, etc.

2.my absolutely fav. is AK 25 (i bought it last fall) cause i know they won't be able to release that on BD (all 25) for quite a while =). i'm the biggest AK fan, i even have the 16 individual film releases (bought at the same time as the boxset) cause i realized that the AK25 editions are movies only, no bonus =P.

Family Video is probably the best place to buy Criterion Blu at the moment in the U.S. They have Pierrot Le Fou and any other single disc Criterion Blu for $25.99.

Just surprise they are still around. The Third Man went away so fast yet this one still hang around even after the announcement of OOP.

I have never been able to pinpoint my very first Criterion. As I never really thought about it until a few months ago. I think I have narrowed it down to Naked and Walkabout...though who knows at this point. I could be any number of films, Haxan, Burden of Dreams lol

1. 8 1/2 and Ugetsu Monogatari on DVD

2. Definitely Fanny and Alexander, imo the most complete DVD package of all time

I think my first Criterion title was Rushmore. Straw Dogs is my favorite title in the collection. Sam Pekinpah is my favorite director and I would love Criterion release more of his work. MGM's lackluster Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia DVD comes to mind as needing an upgrade.

1. The Lady Vanishes, original DVD release. I didn't upgrade to the new release because I figure it'll come out on Blu eventually.

2. Brazil DVD. Love that set. Can't wait to upgrade it to Blu.

I guess one way to vaguely describe it would be "the most non-traditional gangster/crime flick you've ever seen". It is primarily a character study, and therein the focus lies rather than on any, er, "crime stuff". Definitely worth seeking out if you're a Cassavetes fan in general. Or if you're not for that matter - maybe you'll become a convert.

(Drools imagining the prospect of a Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia Criterion BD...)
