Can anyone give me a thumbs up-or-down for Leon Morin, Priest?

I really enjoyed Jean-Paul Belmondo's performance in "Breathless," so I'm thinking about blind-buying it for $30, but wanted some feedback from other members before I do.

Yep, it's OOP and $30 is pretty much the going-rate on eBay right now.

Personally, I found Belmondo's character fascinating, but not everyone might agree with me. I think he gave an outstanding performance and I respected his character quite a bit by the time the movie was over. It's a rare film in my opinion. Some people might find the movie to be dull and boring at times but Melville did just enough of a job to keep my attention until the end. If questions of morality and ethics is something you find interesting, I'd buy it.

Thanks for the feedback! The fact that you give his performance praise is exactly what I was hoping to hear, since he's my main draw.

Right on man... You'll definitely get something satisfying out of the film then. Enjoy!

Thumbs way up. It might be my favorite Melville and Belmondo and Emmanuelle Riva are both fantastic.

I found it a very middling film and wish I hadn't jumped on it even for a 20$ price tag. Belmondo's character isn't fleshed out too well (although some may say the ambiguity works better), and I thought the script was rather tepid. Your mileage may vary.

Leon Morin was a blind buy for me last week. I liked Belmondo in Breathless and Pierrot Le Fou. I saw this when amazon had it for 19.99 but didn't get it as I haven't seen the 2 films yet. Waiting for my copy to arrive.

The joke I like to make is that Criterion's first laserdisc release was Citizen Kane and its last laserdisc release was Armageddon, which is a perfect illustration of the phrase "from the sublime to the ridiculous".

But guilty pleasures are guilty pleasures. Mine are Independence Day and Spice World, so who am I to judge?
Thanks for not ripping me.. and Spice World ... I get it. My favorite scene is Meatloaf saying he'll do anything for those girls, but....

[Show spoiler]The fact that you felt compelled to post this to a group of internet strangers is a cry from the heart. Whether or not you decide to cohabit - or even marry - the girl, I urge you to be a positive influence in the child's life, a role model appreciative of the awesome responsibilities and marvelous discoveries of the single greatest thing that can happen to a man - being a dad.

Not trying to lecture you or anything, but I hope that your thinking quickly moves beyond how many Criterions you could buy with diaper money. Reading that in your post frankly sounds awful, but I also realize you wrote it out of stress and frustration. I wish you strength, courage, and most of all, wisdom.
Yes, that was an awful thing to say.

Eventually the assistant director caught me and escorted me out. The worst though was the last time there, I got caught with 3 other teenagers and the police showed up and put us in the paddy wagon but then dropped us off around the corner and let us go home. The Hollywood security guys thought I was stalking Sharon Stone (who was in that remake of Diabolique)!
You could have earned some serious coolness points if you had told them that you were there to stalk Isabelle Adjani instead.

That reminds me... I have the Twilight Time Blu-ray of The Driver in my stack. Soon.

The original version of Diabolique is so amazing. I revisited it last month when I bought it along with a few others during the Amazon sale.

Léon Morin, Priest has a glowing recommendation from me. The discussions about religion are the most intellectually-stimulating ones on the subject that I have seen in any movie. Jean-Paul Belmondo is incredible, although this role is quite different than the movies of the 1960s that people normally associate him with. Emmanuelle Riva (Hiroshima Mon Amour, Amour) has a great role as well. The underlying storyline about the French Resistance, and about the different ways that the French responded to the Nazi presence, is my favorite aspect of the film.

I mailed my Blu-ray of Three Colors: White to Criterion this morning, so that they'll send me the corrected version. It was a strange feeling to send an expensive Blu-ray into the great wide unknown like that, but everyone else has had good results.

With my current setup, the shortcomings of my copy of White were not apparent, but I want to have a future-proof copy for the day when I eventually do get a new sound system.

Sorry to hear that. I actually received my copy a week ago today, but the case was cracked and the outer sleeve was warped as a result. I emailed Ed at Screen Archives Entertainment with photos of the damaged shipment, and he sent me a new case and a new outer sleeve. I was pleased and impressed with the customer service.

Leon Morin, Priest is a great film. For me, it wasn't about the story, music, cinematography, I just liked Belmondo and his role. He is very magnetic in this film. Kinda the same way Clooney can be in movies like Out of Sight. Just my opinion

Did you send it because of the "Secret Sunshine" writing on the Blue disc? Or is it another issue? I have the "Secret Sunshine" label on my Blue disc and thus I am curious exactly why you are returning it. Thanks

Nevermind, I see now that you wrote "White". However out of curiosity, has anyone mailed back the Blue disc because of the "Secret Sunshine" label?
