I think I missed it but did anyone have any good guesses as to the latest Criterion newsletter clue? Is it Nashville?

That was the consensus on the criterionforum.org board, yes.

Quick question guys: I love Bergman films and so far I have The Seventh Seal, Fanny & Alexander, Wild Strawberries and Smiles of a Summer Night and all of them are great. Right now I can afford one more so between Summer with Monika and The Magician, which one you'll choose?

Bergman is my favorite filmmaker, and of those 3, my personal preference is Summer Interlude. The Magician is well shot, but rather slight and unfulfilling to me. And Monika is filled with character I just don't like.

Personally I'd just wait for Autumn Sonata.

I, too, was going to suggest Summer Interlude. It is one of my favorites.

Think I'm going to bite the bullet on Identification of a Woman today.

Summer with Monika, definitely. Not only is it a worthwhile Bergman, it's a fascinating display of the master in his early days. You can spot a lot of his concerns within this picture. It's almost like a blueprint for what was to come.

EDIT: Not seeing where the other two users are getting Summer Interlude from. Even if it is among your choices, I'd still go with Monika.

Yes, but at the time I had no clue...didn't quite have the wit yet in my brain at that point...my brain was still developing radically... it was quite an adventure that summer of '96, I gotta say.

With my current setup, the shortcomings of my copy of White were not apparent, but I want to have a future-proof copy for the day when I eventually do get a new sound system.
I felt strange mailing the WHITE disc as well as Carlos (disc 2) to Criterion. Here I was taking mint condition blu-rays out of my collection, throwing them in a thin-padded envelope and shipping them off not knowing 100% I'd even receive my replacement discs. But sure enough, 3 weeks later, they arrived on my doorstep much to my glee.

Good call, since the price is right for that Blu-ray during this sale. Let us know what you think.

I'm inclined to think that most people today who see Identification of a Woman may not quite have the same high opinion of the film that I did when I watched it two nights ago, but it really is a beautiful work of cinema that is worth seeing. For me, almost everything came together, because I love the early 1980s music and the general aesthetic of the film, while I also relate to the burnout of the main character.

Big Bergman fan, but I've never seen Summer with Monika for some reason. Maybe I'll blind buy with a coupon.

I ordered a couple of blus on the B&N sale on Tuesday. On the order status says "Expected Ship Date: August 19, 2013". Do they take that long to process orders?

So...

Which version of Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much do y'all like best?

After revisiting the 1956 remake that stars James Stewart and Doris Day, I decided that my preferences sway slightly in the direction of the original 1934 version that was given such a beautiful release by Criterion. For me, nothing can replace the menace of Peter Lorre in that version, and I loved the wild and crazy gunfight.

I've got a lot of love for the 1956 version as well, so my preference for the original is high praise. I'm convinced that Steven Spielberg drew influence from a pivotal Morocco sequence in the remake for some of his chase scenes in Raiders of the Lost Ark. James Stewart and Doris Day are both quite fun in their roles, and it's fun to see the frame-by-frame similarities that the remake shares with the original during the London scenes.

Watching the 1956 version really made me want to revisit my Criterion of the original, so I might just do that this weekend.
