In regards to "The Ice Storm" >>>

Why does Criterion release a BD with such a mediocre transfer?
That's quite surprising.

i would like to order the three color trilogie in the next sale. will there still be a chance that i might get a faulty edition of white?

it would be annoying to have to send a disc back and wait for a replacement if you are in germany and everything will take months instead of a week or 2

thanks !

I was just about to order The Devil's Backbone and it got pulled from my list??? Looks like B&N sold out or something. Anyway, I was going back and forth between it or Sweet Smell of Success to get with The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Looks like its been decided for me.

If you order online you should probably get the updated edition (there is, obviously, a chance you may get an older one though), but if your store is not heavily trafficked during the Criterion sales and they have a copy you may get an older edition...

I got the trilogy during the last sale in store and I had to send the white disc in as it was the faulty version. I actually guessed to myself that I got the faulty edition because of the date on the B&N price sticker: it was actually the release date of the blu so I knew right then that I had to send it in, but I wanted the discounts in store and I even got the gift certificate from Criterion because of having to have it replaced.

I ordered CARLOS some weeks ago at B&N and got the faulty first pressing. Let's see if Criterion sends me a replacement disc to Germany...

Houston we have a problem!

Interestingly enough, I loved The Seventh Seal and Fanny and Alexander, but was unable to connect the dots last night with Wild Strawberries. I'm not quite sure why, as I found a lot of the scenes redeeming and very powerful, but a lot of them didn't "click" together to impress me with the final presentation. Maybe this is one I have to revisit at a later date.

well that's disappointing. i didn't get a chance to watch it last night, and planned on sitting aside time today to watch it. I really enjoy the movie, and still glad i bought it, so i'll try to ignore the transfer quality.

I suggest seeing these before Playtime:

You'll make better sense of what he is doing in Playtime if you do so for it is, really, the culmination of those efforts.
Thanks for the recommendations!

Mon Oncle was the first one I tried to hunt down, seeing how it makes an appearance in the film. Tried to look for Monsieur as well. Hmph.. Need to find a way to watch them.

I went in for Band of Outsiders, and ended up getting Marketa Lazarova instead. I'd never even heard of it. I just looked up a few reviews and it sounded like something I needed to see (I've seen Band of Outsiders, just not on Blu-ray). I love surreal, atmospheric movies. I have to admit that I've only seen a few Czech films - Valerie and Her Week of Wonders has long been one of my favorites. Hopefully this one is as amazing as everyone says. For $17, I figure its worth a shot if it means possibly discovering a great movie that wasn't even on my radar before.

You definitely should. I think 'Mon Oncle' and 'Hulot's Holiday' are much broader films when it comes to comedy, but they are nothing less than complete joys to watch. So many great physical gags that poke fun at the notion of ideal living, ie. buying the latest technological advancements.

The genius of 'Playtime' is apparent whether or not you've seen his prior works. The complex "gag per quadrant" innovation is quite frankly overwhelming in the very best sense. You are not sure where to direct your gaze, so at some point, you just give in and try your best to soak in all the lunacy. I like this quote by Noël Burch, "Tati’s film is the first in the history of cinema that must be seen not only several different times, but from several different distances. It is probably the first really ‘open’ film. Will it remain the only one?”

I absolutely love all of the apartment gags. Just so brilliant:

Think I might end up watching it tonight.

Really didn't know what to expect with The Illusionist. I remember wanting to see it during its release, but never got around to it. I wasn't expecting it to be one of the better films of this decade. It's thematically crushing. The ability to convey so much through its simplistic yet aesthetically pleasing visuals is just so refreshing. Even this morning, I can't seem to shake away that ending.

[Show spoiler]"Magicians don't exist."

Currently have The Triplets of Belville on hold at the library.

Report back. I have not yet seen 'Triplets' but needless to say, my interest was piqued with 'The Illusionist' which was by far the best animated film if 2010. Considering I saw it in a theater populated by two other people (one which was apparently asleep most of the way), it deserved to be much bigger and warmly recieved than it was.

Unsurprisingly, 'The Illusionist' plays very well on repeat viewings. I may see it again after I finally watch Jour De Fete.

Yes, the BD MSRPs for $125, while the DVD MSRPs for $100. That's not unusual, though. Contrary to what you suggest, the MSRP on a given BD is usually about $10 more than the equivalent DVD.

You might be confused by the fact that pre-BD, most Criterions DVDs were released at $40, which is the current price point for most of their BDs, But if you go to their website and check any random title, like say The Devil's Backbone, you'll see that the BD is $40 while the DVD is $30. The only recent title that I can think of off-hand that is priced the same for both BD and DVD is Shoah.

i remember seeing a few also but can't really remember now. this month has been a crazy blur of criterion titles. must have been to 3 stores (actually 4 but one did not have a movie section) and 7 or so total trips

i guess also i was thinking that i paid the same price on DVD for a lot of the BD's i bought this sale but the DVD's i did buy are not on BD so i paid 17.99 for them like which is the common BD price
