I loved that, personally. Even more, I loved the fact that the grandparents were played by the two lead actors from the 1953 version of War of the Worlds.

Thanks! Some novels simply do not translate well to screen, and I love Jack Kerouac's On the Road so much that I'm hard-pressed to imagine any adaptation measuring up. I'll check it out just the same, though, through a rental in the future.

It's a fantastic movie about the competition between athletes but thats about it. It's not quite deep or existential enough for me to really declare it a masterpiece. A film like Chariots of Fire however is quite the opposite. It's more than just about the thrill of the competition but also about spiritual themes that go beyond just sports. I always look for that extra meaning that takes a sports film over the edge. Field of Dreams comes to mind too, and even though its not a movie about sports or baseball really, what matters more to me are the intangibles (family, life's purpose, community) in the film. I did enjoy Downhill Racer though and I thought Robert Redford and Gene Hackman were terrific, but the film was shallow and didn't quite go beyond what was intended. Does anyone else feel this way about the movie?
What I love about Downhill Racer is that the athlete (Redford) is depicted as a flawed and not particularly pleasant individual, as opposed to most sports movies that bend over backwards to paint the picture of inspirational hero athletes. It's a low-key film that is eerily prophetic of today's media attention that reveals many famous athletes as being great at their particular sport, but not necessarily being likeable people.

I sold my DVD of Downhill Racer months ago in anticipation of getting a Blu-ray someday, only to find out that the film will likely not be restored to the level of a Blu-ray release. Oh well...

This is my hope. I've been holding out on buying the individual Blu-ray of The 400 Blows for this reason.

You really should just buy 400 Blows. Repackaging a film like that isn't CC's game.

Was it originally a digipack? Mine's just a normal Criterion case in a slipbox.

No. Videodrome has always been a plastic Criterion case tailored to look like a videotape, then cased inside a box that resembles the old-school cardboard covers for videotapes.

Default Weekend

Two nights ago, I watched Jean Luc Godard's Weekend, which I purchased as a blind buy at the recent Barnes and Noble sale.

I found it absolutely brilliant!

I must admit that I was hesitant about even purchasing it with some of the negative remarks that I had heard from some members on this thread. Bottom line: "To each, his (or her) own."

Check out 2 or 3 Things I know about Her. Its in the same politically charged, floaty vein. Alongside Contempt and Weekend, it is my favorite Godard. His early 60's playful films kind of irk me in that Wes Anderson self-satisfied way.

Chinese (PRC, HK, and Taiwan) films have been a big hole in the Criterion Collection. They did John Woo's The Killer and Hard-Boiled on LD and (briefly) DVD. And on DVD and BD, Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express (no longer available) and In the Mood for Love and Edward Yang's Yi Yi

There are a lot more I'd love to see from them. In addition to the ones above, there is the rest of Zhang Yi-mou's oeuvre -- there are only five of his (more recent) films released on Blu in the US. Plus classics from King Hu, classics from Tsui Hark, some terrific films by Clara Law, Mabel Cheung, Stanley Kwan, Peter Chan, Tian Zhuang-Zhuang, Hou Hsiao-hsien and others. And I'd kill for a definitive Director Approved Edition Blu-ray of John Woo's Bullet in the Head (his very best film).

(re: Farewell, My Concubine)

Concubine is a gorgeous film that's never had a decent video release. There are some intense colors that get oversaturated in Standard Definition. Miramax's LD and DVD are nice tries, but they're not up to snuff.

The same is true of Raise the Red Lantern, where the intensity of the reds get overdriven easily. I admit, though, that I've not seen MGM/UA's DVD release (which is said, at least by Amazon, to be 2.35:1; really? it should be no wider than 1.85:1). Sony's LD had an OK picture, but was 4x3, and I've got a couple of DVD's (one from a small label called Magic Play, the other a Hong Kong import) that are the correct aspect ratio, but have ghastly image quality.

ive only seen a 720p rip (dont know if it was from HK HDTV or a bluray) of raise the red lantern , aspect ratio was something between 16:9 & 21:9. but video quality was pretty decent.
there should be a newer transfer avaible in france and germany (we got a bluray release not to long ago).

===

yep criterion needs more Korean and chinese cinema. looks like nobody is releasing these movies.
