I agree having seen Kid with a Bike and Hunger quite recently I am very impressed, Add Carlos to that the other day and wow I am very very impressed. Fish Tank is next on the list since I have heard so many good things about that.

I owned Hunger on DVD before my big streamlining a few months back. I forgot to mention it a few posts back, but it's a solid movie. I'm shaky about upgrading it to Blu-ray, because it's not a film that I particularly wanted to enjoy watching multiple times. I might give in one day, though, since the sheer emotional impact of the film is worth appreciating again.

I tend to steer clear of recent movies (2000-present) in the Criterion Collection and, instead, concentrate on older long-lost classics that have "earned their stripes" over the decades, but this is admittedly more of a personal faux-snobbery thing than anything else. Revanche is an exception, because the premise of the film and the trailer intrigued me enough to take a leap of faith. I am glad that I did, because it's a majestic work of cinema that stands shoulder to shoulder with many of the older greats.
I certainly hope you live long enough for Carlos to become a long-lost classic.

It's freaking awesome.

Fish Tank isn't just about social deprivation. It's about somebody having one foot in that world and one foot out of it. I avoided Kes for years because it sounded depressing but, without spoilers, Kes represents the possibility of escape. The hole in the hedgerow is a magical image.

I've always felt a bit sorry for Lena Dunham. I couldn't imagine what she'd done to deserve such relentless scorn. When I read her Criterion top 10 it confirmed my suspicion that her sense of humour is too dry for a world that uses emoticons. I was won over by her inclusion of Fish Tank and Weekend, which is ridiculously underrated.

As much as I love those two (my favorite comment about them was from a posting on Usenet way back in the day: "BRANDED TO KILL, on the other hand, is like TOKYO DRIFTER's drunk, crack-addict cousin who just happens to have taken some acid on the day you run into him.") my favorite Suzuki films are Gate of Hell and The Story of a Prostitute.

Gate of Flesh, with its (as Tony Rayns once put it) "retina-ripping Fujicolor" would look great on Blu.

The last three look almost as sharp as a Blu-ray when upscaled and projected 10 feet wide, and would be good candidates for Blu-ray upgrade editions. The set provides a great sampling of nicely-plotted and beautifully shot noir titles by five different directors including Suzuki (as well as three titles featuring BRANDED TO KILL's Joe Shishido). The black and white CinemaScope compositions are really amazing. It really makes me want to see more films by each one of the directors (especially in full Criterion-quality Blu-rays).
I have this set as well. I haven't finished, but the three I've seen all the way through were all gems (I Am Waiting, Cruel Gun Story, and A Colt is My Passport). Kind of funny that I'm hoping for more Suzukis when I haven't watched one I've got, but I did start Take Aim at the Police Van once...unfortunately, it was 3 A.M. and I fell asleep.

If I could have one other Suzuki upgraded, it would have to be Youth of the Beast, but I'd obviously prefer to have all of them on Blu. Still, at least the other DVDs are strong SD-DVD presentations, unlike the original Criterions of Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter.

That's too bad because they have some wonderful recent films in the collection. I never would have known about the amazing Secrets of the Grain if it weren't for Criterion putting it out and now it is one of my favorite films of the past ten years.

I have just watched Solaris for the first time in my life.

the review says it would be a "slow" and "demanding" movie. but i found it to be interessting all the time, it was never boring or slow at all.
i liked 2001 already alot but i prefer solaris much more.

i think i have seen the remake years ago but i didnt like it and dont remeber it all but Solaris will stay with me thats for sure. might watch it again with the commentary track.

Great Movie !

I will make sure to order Ivan's Childhood in the next sale

Yes! Solaris is the ultimate tear jerker and my favorite science fiction film. The second half devastated me unlike anything I have ever seen.

solaris would probably make a good double feature with children of hiroshima or godzilla. all the talk about radition. they even talk about hiroshima. and i think solaris was made 10 years after the russians were still testing nuclear bombs (tsar? world destroyer).

i liked the second half alot but the first half was still pretty interessting and well made.

Solaris was one of the first Criterions that I upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray. That film is just downright phenomenal across the board, and it's one of my top five science fiction movies.

Solaris would be a fun double feature with the 2013 film, Oblivion, that just came out this week on Blu-ray. Oblivion is...somewhat less cerebral...but, like Solaris, it does feature some plot elements that call into question how we define the reality of people whom we love, and about whether we love an actual person or merely love our idea of that person based on memories and appearance.

Funny you say that.

Quote:
There’s definitely that aspect with your character, Julia, completely taking over the memories of Jack (Cruise). “Solaris” was another film that immediately came to mind as well.

Olga: See, what's funny is I actually watched that; Joseph never brought it up. I come from Tarkovsky-land [laughs], and at that point I hadn't watched it for many years. I thought there were themes in there though that I should pick out for "Oblivion."

I watched the new one [Steven Soderbergh’s 2002 remake] as well, with George Clooney and Natasha McElhone. The story – both in “Solaris” and “Oblivion” -- deals with space and memory. Why does Jack remember certain things but not others? Why does he remember love? I like to believe, and it’s very naïve, but perhaps it's because love never dies. You know, you can wipe someone's memory, but you can't wipe love away.

Thanks! I had never read that Olga Kurylenko interview before, so I went all the way back to the first segment, where she discusses To the Wonder. Interesting how Hitchcock's Notorious is also mentioned in context to Oblivion, and I can see the influence.

Oblivion happens to be my second favorite film of the year behind To the Wonder. Not just because of Kurylenko, of course, but she does fine work in both films.

yes that was a really beautiful part of the movie. but i had the feeling people on the station were dealing with their guilt, too. all kind of emotions not only love.

but i liked the part as well about "hiroshima", like horishma was only a experiment on mankind. the same thing they did on solaris as well with their X-RAYs.

"we dont understand that, lets better destroy it"

I watched the 1951 Humphrey Bogart movie, The Enforcer, late last night. Awesome, awesome movie.

This, of course, got me wishing that Criterion would deliver the goods on some Bogart films. In a Lonely Place, Key Largo, Dark Passage, or any of the others.
