I have 80 bucks more to play with to buy more Criterion blurays. I was leaning towards the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set. You guys have any other recommendations?

Can't go wrong with that box. The transfers are stunning

I recommend Last Year at Marienbad (Best Criterion BR, imo) and Pierrot Le Fou if you don't own them already.

1) I'm pretty positive it was "In The Mood For Love" on DVD. I had taken a film class at school (well, one of many film classes I took) and our professor showed us Fallen Angels and I just fell in love with Wong Kar Wai's work. I asked the professor to recommend other films from the director, and the first he mentioned (and insisted I probably already saw in one of his classes...I hadn't, but we had so many classes together so I can understand the confusion) was In The Mood For Love. I think that was my last semester at school (back in 2005) so shortly after that I was back home in NYC and shopping at J&R, with their great (if overpriced) foreign film section. They had the film, so I picked it up. The decision had nothing to do with it being Criterion. Truth be told, I won't buy something just because it is Criterion; however, when I am looking to add something foreign and/or classic or important to my collection, Criterion is the first place I look because of the kinds of film they generally release.

2) Not really sure what my favorite title is that I own. In The Mood For Love perhaps. The Bad Sleep Well is also a favorite, and Band Of Outsiders. Truthfully, I don't have a large Criterion DVD collection (only 13 titles), and my Criterion Blu collection is already close to the same size (9 titles) in much less time. I wouldn't get rid of any of the DVD titles I have without an upgrade to Blu though.

I'd say Seven Samurai is my favorite title in the collection that I don't own. Love the film, truly one of my all time favorites, but I never bought the DVD. Now that it is so close to coming out on Blu, I'm just waiting it out. Definitely buying the Blu right away.

I think my first were a few in a DD sale: Naked Lunch, M, and Videodrome on DVD.

1. Definately The Royal Tenenbaums. I got it release week from Best Buy (this must've been when I was 13 or 14, my dad had to beg the employees to let me run in and get it, because they were closing)

2. The Third Man or Brazil. I don't think I can decide between those two (three, if you wait a few months for The Night of the Hunter, whenever that gets announced).

I have to admit I know nothing about Cassavetes, plus Gazara & Falk have never been 2 of my favorites but I might check it out later on depending how it goes with Killing Of Chinese Bookie. I sometimes discover new things with Criterion releases about actors and directors I did not think much about before hand. That is why I enjoy Criterion so much, great way to discover new interesting things that are so different.

Yeah the thing about Antichrist is that it was apparently shot at 25 fps, so the upcoming criterion blu will inevitably be 1080p/24 and thereby not true to the source, yet will no doubt be approved by LvT anyway and sport the sticker accordingly...I mean, right? But for serious, interested to see how this is handled. Silly LvT, shooting 25 fps to begin with...

He didn't really shoot it 25 fps so much as he shot it 1080i50... which means there are essentially 2 fields per "frame", each displaying 540 lines. When the lines are merged, half of 50 is 25 - hence, the 25 fps. It's mostly a European thing, but even Final Cut Pro will de-interlace 1080i50 and convert it to 24p, so it's not really a big deal.

Not to be combative but I'm pretty sure he shot at 25fps progressive. It seems pretty unlikely for a major feature length production to be shot interlaced at this point. IMU, the 1080i/50 only comes into play because that's what they went with on at least one of the existing BD releases (forget which) to retain the original fps, since 1080p/25 wasn't included in the BD specs. But at least one of the other BD releases (again forget which) is already in 1080p/24, so I agree it's no big deal so long as it's handled 'correctly'--whatever that is. I'd assume it would be accomplished simply by slowing down by 4%? My main concern is the audio, since I hear pitch correction can affect sound quality. I dunno.

Edit: Yeah, according to Wikipedia/imdb it was shot mostly with the Red One camera at 4k resolution. Some of the ultra slo mo shots were captured with a Phantom V4.

I would never part with Short Cuts, 3 Women, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Passion of Joan of Arc until Blurays are released

Short answer - No. Long answer - Are you being facetious? In an earlier reply to me you said something like, "I hope I can keep up with the action with one frame missing per second", so I felt it's a justified suspicion. Haha.

But I'm sure it'll look great. Going from 25p to 24p, there's no need for any wacky conversion stuff. It's mostly the audio that concerned me.
