I like the long answer. I was being humorous about the missing frame every second , but surely I don't want to experience some kind of noticeable fault with the transfer. But like you said, given Criterion's track record, it's nothing to worry about.

P.S.
Criterion should include the deleted frames in the special features.

Haha, excellent. It seems Criterion basically has two options:
1) Slow the framerate by 4% to 24fps and pitch correct the audio, which would be the simpler and better-looking option since it involves no duplicate frames or trickery, or
2)Transfer the material to 60hz by adding duplicate frames, basically like 3:2 pulldown from the dvd days, and make the BD transfer 1080i/60. Here, the material would basically run at 'original' speed, but with the dreaded 'jerkiness' from good ol NTSC dvd.

I'd be really surprised if it wasn't the first one. There may be another obvious option I haven't considered, in which case someone who knows more about all this crap (haha) than I do feel free to chime in. Or not, since this is sort of slipping into OT territory.

ok, I'm definitely getting Yojimbo/Sanjuro but I'm getting 1 more and can't decide between Wings of Desire, the 400 Blows, or Kagemusha. I'd love some opinions or other films you'd put ahead of thse 3. Thanks!

Going all Kurosawa is very tempting. I could always get the other stuff at a later date. Are any of those discs going out of print soon ala Third Man/

Good afternoon,

You should try to expose yourself to as many directors as possible. Going out of your comfort zone is the only way to learn more about Cinema.

May I recommend Federico Fellini's 8 ½. It is the most important film Criterion have released on Blu-ray thus far.

I agree with the 400 Blows recommendation, one of my favorites.

I would also but not on a blind buy. Criterion are so expensive (here in Canada anyway where eventhe DVD are still over $30) that it might not be a good thing to buy it without having some idea, I would go for a rental

Well I have no doubt that Criterion will defer to LvT on this, so really it's whatever he decides, and he may well decide to keep the original speed intact to preserve the unsettling nature of the film.

As I've said before I saw this at IFC, and it was VERY blurry in motion (it was a digital presentation and not film) and I honestly believe that what I saw was running at 25fps and possibly, interlaced 1080, though I would hope IFC would be able to present theatrically at a higher resolution. There is an extremely distinct contrast between the shots in motion, and the gorgeous, crystal clear slow motion shots that do not suffer from motion blur because they run slowly. I would think that on some level, LvT intended this and that is why almost all releases sport 1080i50 transfers.

Agree 100%. I've read comments about this being projected at 25p in Europe (both 35mm and digital), from people who are seemingly pretty knowledgable about "how stuff works" in Euro cinemas. Unfortunately the 1080i/50 isn't really an option for the Criterion since most north american tvs don't support it. I think the decision to shoot 25fps had more to do with simplifying things for European dvd (no PAL speedup) than creating a mood per se. It's apparently a practice that's become fairly common on modern Euro productions - something I just recently learned. I've seen the UK dvd and though it obviously can't compete with a 25p cinema showing, I noticed the properties you mention.

It's also definitely coming from Criterion at some point, as it was in that Amazon.com poll (last year?) that Howards End won.

Was the poll concerning confirmed titles - i.e. amazon just asking which upcoming criterion blu excites people most, or just potential titles - i.e. criterion asking which title people wanted to see most on BD? Hopefully the first one.

Three Criterion editions unfortunately (original DVD release, DVD re-release and the blu-ray). Can't say it pisses me off too much as I've worn out the first two editions and love the blu-ray release.

I've never actually seen it and was thinking of making a blind buy.
