Stalker is a challenging movie, and it requires the utmost alertness and mental fitness to enjoy with the best results.
Sorry didnt read through the tread before I posted. That's odd, I didn't expect that. Kind of a coincidence it's rumored to be released? I hope they do it, it's a good film I'd like to add to my collection.

Well, Ebert begged to differ:

Dead Poets Society" is a collection of pious platitudes masquerading as a courageous stand in favor of something: doing your own thing, I think. It's about an inspirational, unconventional English teacher and his students at "the best prep school in America" and how he challenges them to question conventional views by such techniques as standing on their desks. It is, of course, inevitable that the brilliant teacher will eventually be fired from the school, and when his students stood on their desks to protest his dismissal, I was so moved, I wanted to throw up.

You were right, Owl. Shadow of a Doubt looked fantastic. The best I've ever seen it a look. A real joy.

And my oh my, the Dracula-esque elements of the film are more apparent with each viewing.

Haha. When I revisited Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur last night and watched the younger Norman Lloyd as Fry, I kept thinking about his school headmaster role in Dead Poets Society.

By the way, I'm watching Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry right now (well, taking a short dinner break at the moment). This is one of the most beautiful video presentations of any Blu-ray that I've ever seen. Easily the best-looking Blu-ray in the box set so far. The leaves and forest just jump out of the screen. Anyone who overlooks this one needs to be put away for a long, long time.

This is a great way to celebrate Hitchcock's birthday.

A funny, often over-looked film with Jerry Mathers before Leave it to Beaver.

But it's always given me the same hives it gave Ebert--Particularly Ebert's observation that we see Williams teach ONE entire class of poetry in the entire film, and spend the rest of the semester creating a cult of personality around himself as therapy guru.

But I can see Witness as Weir-completism for Criterion.

I'm sure you are totally right! I just think this should never have been attempted as a film. I do need to read this book and I will. But I have nothing against David Mitchell, in fact I think he's a brilliant author. The creators of the film just turned me off.

Yes sir! I would cream my pants if this came to Criterion Blu-ray. And that cream would be of the finest Amish cow dairy variety.

When Dead Poets Society came out during my senior year of high school in 1989, I was not the mental giant you see before you. I was the cinephile equivalent of a 98-pound weakling. People would walk up to me at the beach and kick copies of Resnais in my face.

*ahem*

Dead Poets Society blew me away back then in 1989, and I thought that it was one of the greatest films that I had ever seen. In years since, the movie has grown stale, and it now ranks on the lower tier of Peter Weir's works in my eyes. Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Last Wave, Witness, and even The Way Back are vastly superior efforts.
I don't dislike Dead Poets Society these days, but it does not resonate with me like it did when I was 17, which is the ideal age to take in that story. (Then again, maybe the understanding in my middle age that I did not quite "seize the day" and am now a civil servant living a life of quiet desperation has soured the film for me.)

Yeah, I would love it as a CC release, but I would prefer to give that "spot" to an older film that may not hit blu as fast. Idk.

Weir is one of my favorite directors, but I'd have to say that even I didn't like Green Card much. Dead Poets Society I enjoyed greatly when I saw it in the theater, but found it doesn't hold up well to rewatching.

Anyhoo, Weir is definitely under-represented on Blu. Either of the films that Criterion already owns the rights to, Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Last Wave, would be great to see on Blu, though personally I'd prefer the latter.

Other than that, the two I really, really, really want to see on Blu would be The Mosquito Coast and Fearless.

How could it be To Be Or Not To Be?

They had "HA" specifically on France. Plus, Criterion has a good relationship with IFC. It seems rather obvious.
