I think to keep up with where things are going they would have to jump on the UV bandwagon.

Frances Ha is my favorite film of the year thus far, and I've been meaning to see City Lights. Two definite buys come November!

It's interesting that the AK100 cost considerably more than the Zatoichi set, especially since that set was DVD only.

Ehh, wasn't planning on going to the city this weekend...don't have anyone there now to meet up with anyway..and it's not really worth the money for just one film, I guess.

So I guess I could, it's just inconvenient and it would be rather awesome if I could see it here instead.

..but I really do want to see it...a lot..

So I expect a Kurosawa upgrade on December since Criterion has always release at least 1 Kurosawa film since 2009.

2009: Kagemusha
2010: Yokimbo, Sanjuro and Seven Samurai
2011: High and Low
2012: Rashomon

Maybe on December we'll have Ikiru or The Hidden Fortress??

France's problems are not "huge" (in the sense that you mean anyways), but she does not act like they are.

Agreed. The Zatoichi set looks cool, I just have a feeling it's something that would sit there sealed and unwatched for years to come. It would definitely be quite an undertaking to tackle it!

Here's hoping next month delivers some Cronenberg, Lynch, Life Aquatic, Carnival of Souls, Hidden Fortress, or a big surprise like The Tenant, Suspiria, or Thief. Something a little more mainstream I guess.

It probably won't happen, but I would love to see them release some public domain horror films; Night of the Living Dead, Last Man on Earth, House on Haunted Hill would all be great! It doesn't sound like any other company will ever release these here in North America which is a real shame!

I'm let down with the NOV releases and at the same time I'm excited if that makes sense. Let Down because no titles that have been hinted at were announced. No Lynch No Its a Mad Mad Mad World, No Scanners!

I would bet a million dollars Barnes 50% off Sale will capture that final Tuesday release date for that massive crazy Cool looking Zatoichi Box Set. I am sure they even timed it so they could get more sales from the box set.

I just hope the new Dual Format cases aren't ugly. I'd hope for the same standard case that the 2 Disc sets come in just always keeping that DVD copy in the back. At the least they better be the same height as the current BLU style Criterion cases.

What sup?

I just got back from the gym and went straight to the Criterion home page for announcements.

A summation of my reaction...

Dual format Blu-ray/DVD =

Frances Ha =

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman =

Tokyo Story =

City Lights =

I don't think we get it until the 30th but I will be there opening weekend.

David Lowery did vaugly tease that his early stuff (Pioneer/St. Nick) could find its way onto the collection.

I like the idea of the blu/DVD combo, especially because the price will stay the same.

If these are DVD cases however...dear god.

I promised someone if they didn't like Frances Ha, I would watch any foul thing of their choosing. So....I've gotta watch Keith Lemon: The Movie.

Gonna try to wash it down with some Hollis Frampton afterwards.

Unfortunately, looking at the cover art images, the aspect ratio is consistent with a DVD-sized case. If that is the case, holy crap, Criterion, WHAT are you thinking...

And they better not charge more with the DVD in there too. Who was asking for this? WHO? If anything just stop releasing DVDs.

But here's one thing I find interesting -- now I wonder if the old-school blue stickers will see an increase in collectibility/value much to the chagrin of all of the naysayers about sticker collecting.

That's pretty much my problem with it. I do realize I'm in the minority here, but I thought it was a well made movie about annoying people.

I've yet to see Tokyo Story, but it looks good. Overall, it's another disappointing month for me. I'm always hoping for more Kurosawa, Lynch, Von Trier, Fellini, or alternatively The Pusher Trilogy or The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I'm happy for all those whose wishes were fulfilled by Criterion today, I was just REALLY hoping for Mulholland Drive.
