Oh wow, I never noticed. I'm behind on my MoC collection, so I just noticed most of the titles I want to eventually buy have Dual Format editions.

all of BFI's releases are dual format, and imo "new" to the catalog Criterion releases going forward will be dual format, while upgrades will obviously stay split for the time being.
does anyone know the msrp of the Zatoichi set??
that could be really scary.

It'll drop to $112.50 + tax during B&N's 50% sale, which is a great price for the content included. Even cheaper if you're a member of course.

Criterion's page. Look above the $179 price you noticed, and you'll see the MSRP

Ah, they had it in bold print for a reason I guess.

Undoubtedly. Most of the films in the series are under 90 minutes. Only one is over 100 minutes, so two films should fit comfortably on a BD50. I'm guessing that Zatoichi and Yojimbo, which is 115 minutes, will be the one on its own disc.

Doesn't seem that way as Tokyo Story is an upgrade and it's a dual. In fact, it looks like they no longer sell the currently available DVD version on Criterion.com.

Decidedly non-Criterion-related, but here goes...

September 2009...

I was not at work that day, because it was a furlough day for state government. I slept an hour later than usual, went for a 10-mile run in the rain, took a shower, and was sitting in a big living room chair reading a book. I was in a pretty cheerful and relaxed mood, because I had nothing to do for the rest of the day after my run, and I had the entire time to relax, read, watch a movie or two, and just chill.

I noticed that it was raining incredibly hard outside, but I just shrugged it off and kept enjoying my book.

I suddenly saw water trickling across my carpet. WTF? I ran over to the window and saw a massive 40-foot-wide raging flash flood river across the apartment courtyard area (in an area that I had never seen any sort of flood water or standing water in the past during rainstorms). The force of the flood was unbelievable, and I would have been swept away had I stepped out my back sliding glass door. I just sort of laughed, threw my hands up in the air, and knew that all was lost. I then picked up most everything extremely valuable that I could pick up in a short time. Within five minutes, my apartment was submerged in five inches or so of water.

Since then, I have had a whole new respect for people who deal with tornadoes, floods, and such.
One minute, you're relaxing at home, minding your own business, and living your normal daily routine. The next minute, your entire life is suddenly thrown into an unbelievable hassle.

I'm thankful that I had a furlough day that day, funnily enough. If I had worked in the office that day, it would have taken me five hours to make my normal 30-minute commute home due to the flooded roads, I would have finally parked my car in front of my apartment, thankful that I could relax, then walked downstairs to my apartment, seen the damage, and absolutely lost my sanity in a split second.

Anyway... The clear plastic containers for the win.

They won't have released enough Ozu titles until they've done them all.

Tokyo Story will be only the second Ozu title they've released on Blu-ray.

I wonder why they left out the 26th film of Zatoichi? Seems very strange considering this is Criterion. Maybe it will be a stand alone film released in Dec.

Can that kind of thing be interesting and entertaining? Sure. I mean, Woody Allen basically built a career out of that kind of thing. But it can also be self-indulgent, self-important drivel.
Gah! It's so frustrating that so many people have these pre-conceived notions about what Frances Ha is! SEE IT! Especially if you like Woody Allen.

Tokyo Story will be blind buy for me, but it's a no-brainer.

Postwar Japanese movies (as in post-WWII) fascinate me to no end. The resilience of that culture just impresses me and humbles me.

Akira Kurosawa's Something Like an Autobiography is an essential read for anybody interested in the topic. I thought about that book during the days after the Japanese tsunami. I read an article about how a bunch of people who had lost their homes established a temporary camp in a park area near the coast, and, every day, other people kept bringing gifts to that area (food, clothes, supplies, etc.) in elaborately-wrapped gift boxes and leaving them along the side of the camp.

I've always loved Kurosawa's Stray Dog for this reason. Not to mention the wonderful Postwar Kurosawa Eclipse set.

You were saying?
Where are you getting 21?

#84: Good Morning
#217: Tokyo Story
#232: A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds
#240: Early Summer
#332: Late Spring

Eclipse #3: Early Spring / Tokyo Twilight / Equinox Flower / Late Autumn / The End of Summer
Eclipse #10: Tokyo Chorus / I Was Born, But… / Passing Fancy

That's 14. 16 if you want to count the two Blu-ray releases (both of which had previously come out on DVD). 19 if you want to add in the three films of his they released on LD (Floating Weeds, Early Summer, Good Morning).

What difference does it really make to get an extra DVD copy? Seems to me like people have made a home business for themselves out of selling the DVD and digital copies that come with Blu-Rays. I would also prefer Blu-Ray-sized art but I own too many DVDs for it to make a difference if I end up with some DVD-sized cases on my shelf.

I don't like the City Lights art much, but it's no dealbreaker. I don't think The Great Dictator art is that good, either -- overly "clever" without much inherent visual attractiveness, for me. Both ends of the Criterion art spectrum.
