From their POV, it's better than making 2 sets which would have to be designed differently to house the different number of discs of each respective format. Even without DVD's incuded, it's unlikely that they would put just one film on a single BD. The movies are quite short, and it'd be a waste to do that.

I'm not worried about any of that - Just that the set has to be wide enough to include 18 DVDs that I have no interest in. Might actually be a deal breaker for me.

There are several TV series that I think would be great to see as Criterion releases. Off the top of my head:

Fallen Angels -- A Showtime series from the early 90s adapting hardboiled stories by the likes of Chandler, Woolrich, Thompson, Hammett, Goodis, et alia. Among the episode directors were Steven Soderbergh, Alfonso Cuarón, and Peter Bogdanovich. Never released on DVD.

Philip Marlowe, Private Eye -- An HBO series from the early 80s, with Powers Boothe as Marlowe. All episodes were adaptations of Chandler stories. Released on DVD, but of so-so quality.

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, and Further Tales of the City. Released on DVD from three different companies (one min-series apiece).

Kieslowski's The Decalogue

Von Trier's The Kingdom and The Kingdom II

On the Air -- Lynch & Frost's demented sitcom follow-up to Twin Peaks, behind-the-scenes at a comedy/variety TV show in the 50s. Never released on DVD, but I have a Japanese LD of all seven episodes.

And many more.

Here's the runtimes for the movies, broken down into 3's:

1-3: 259 Minutes
4-6: 255 Minutes
7-9: 255 Minutes
10-12: 246 Minutes
13-15: 271 Minutes
16-18: 250 Minutes
19-21: 305 Minutes
22-24: 273 Minutes
25 + Documentary: 146 Minutes

One of the movies from 19-24 will probably be added to the diisc with the 25th and the doc. Overall, it's doable without compromising anything.

You can sort of work out the measurements of it based on the size of the disc to the packaging. I don't think it'll be overly huge. Each page, looks like it "unfolds" to house the DVD's. Of course it would have been smaller if it were just BD's, and I would have preferred it, but it doesn't look humongous from what I gather. Maybe from another angle it might be.

Thanks for the breakdown.

While it doesn't look ideal...it may just be Okay. Afterall, they've released just as much movie on a single disc before (World on a Wire), and they did a stellar job.

I'll hope for the best.

All I know for sure is that it's two thirds wider than it needs to be.

They also put the TV version of Fanny and Alexander on one disc, and that's 322 minutes (5 hrs 22 mins) and it still looks great.

Seeing them all collected, I get a "fan art" impression from them. That's not a knock per se, it just reminds me of other occasions when fans are asked to submit their interpretations of a character or movie, and you see a hodgepodge of different art styles submitted. I love most of what I see there

Yes indeed. Crazy how today they unveiled both their worst artwork of the year and their best.

I'm in for Frances Ha, Tokyo Story, and City Lights. Fantastic month. I don't see how anyone could be disappointed. Two of the best films from two of the greatest film directors of all time.

People who have zero interest in these movies would be disappointed - general statements about how anyone could be disappointed can easily be shot down.
I thought this was the least interesting batch of titles yet. But that's just me. Being a casual Charlie Chaplin fan maybe City Lights would be one of interest
I wouldnt even say Im disappointed because I dont get worked up on the 15th anymore.
Im sure that some people who were hoping for Le Samourai , a Hitchcock, a Lynch or some American classic from the 30s-50s could very well be disappointed.
But its not the end of the world ! No sir ! Wait until next month

I'm not a big Chaplin fan but I don't think people hoping for some American classic from the 30s-50s have too much to complain about.

Not that the pissers and the moaners need anything to complain about. Like I said earlier, they make their own fun.

Agreed. As I said, this wasnt the month for me but I cant complain as I have gotten The Blob, Devils Backbone, Rashomon , The Man Who Knew Too Much, 310 to Yuma this year.
Titles not being announced is really nothing to get all sour grapey about for page after page. A simple *Meh* will do

Any Criterion that makes it to Blu-ray is OK in my book.
