I am so ecstatically happy at these announcements I can barely breath. The one time I forget to check them until six hours later.

There are only 4 Criterions so far this year I've been in for, so I'm thrilled when there's one thing in a month that I want.

I scroll down to the first item. City Lights! Yes! What's this, dual format – sweet.

Scroll down. Don't know what Frances Ha is. Tokyo Story! HELL YES!

Down some more.

I am so in love with Criterion right now. I've been watching the Zatoichi series on Hulu recently. I'm up to #16. There isn't a single one that's not great. This is a dream set. And since I'm going away to college this fall and I may be without a blu-ray player for a while... How awesome is dual format!

Funny how people like to complain every month, they just announced #1 (Tokyo Story) and #30 (City Lights) greatest films according to directors (#3 and #50 for critics) on Sight & Sound last year poll, no big deal

I understand if people here have seen them and didn't like them that much, but i don't think any criterion collection fan should dismiss them just because of lack of interest if you haven't seen them.

I'm disappointed. I have Tokyo Story released by BFI. I have the Japanese edition with much better transfer that, I guess, will be used by Criterion as well. But Criterion release will have much more supplements so I'll do a triple dip.

BTW, on Mar 8, 2014 Shochiku is going to release "Color 4 Ozu" boxset (Equinox Flower, Good Morning, Late Autumn, An Autumn Afternoon) also in 4K digital restoration. I hope Criterion will do the same.

La Cage aux Folles:

Review coming up later today. The new 2K transfer is wonderful. The difference between the old R1 DVD release (non-anamorpchic) and this new Blu-ray release is like champagne and flavored water

I am very happy with the upgrade. Criterion delivers yet again

Since folks here, myself included, have questions regarding the possible changes in case size with these new dual-format releases, has Criterion officially had anything to say regarding this?

I keep hoping for Polanski's TESS each month and being disappointed, I wonder what the holdup is, they definitely control it and the restoration came out on BD in European markets last year/early this year.

I keep being tempted each month on the 15th when it's not among the list to order the UK BD, but I know the moment I do, it'll appear the next month

All they'll do with them is put them in the same case like the 2 disc Brazil blu.

The size of the cases won't change.

Also the "Golden Age of TV", with the 80's PBS video re-airings of the historic 50's Paddy Chayefsky and Rod Serling Playhouse 90 kinescopes. Which, for obvious reasons, we'll never see on Blu.
(And wasn't Twin Peaks just announced on another label?)

And I'm tuning on this thread late, who's already collected their Smug Points on "So, the 'France's ha!' clue was To Be or Not to Be, was it? "

I'm very happy to hear it! Now, make sure that you wait patiently for the CC release this time.

Is ZATOICHI a blind-buy?

Little joke there.

I wish I was a big ZATOICHI fan so I could be super-excited by this news but for me this is a meh... month, already having TOKYO STORY and not being that fond of Chaplin. FRANCES HA might be decent but I'm always a bit disappointed in Criterion releasing contemporary films.

All that talk of IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD and ERASERHEAD and NASHVILLE had me looking in the wrong direction. December's always a bit lacklustre, too, though I suppose they may surprise us.

But hey - even a bad month for Criterion is a pretty good one for anyone else.

I imagine they'd go for separate releases then. It'd be alot easier, plus I'm not sure the cases they use come in "jumbo" size yet.

Look at any announcement from any company for any product since the beginning of the internet and you will find complaints about every single aspect of said product by at least one person.

Good to hear. I've never seen but I'm a big fan of both the musical adaptation and The Birdcage, so I don't see why I wouldn't like this film!

I don't normally spend much time in this thread, but...there were people who didn't think the 'France is ha!' clue was Frances Ha? That was easily the most obvious clue in the history of Criterion drawings.
