I already explained why i don't like combo packs. I don't use the DVD's. Ever. I throw them all in the trash and there sits an empty disc holder. Now i always go for the single disc versions if the studios make one. It would be nice if Criterion still made single disc versions to give people a choice who don't want the DVD. I don't like DVD's anymore and it just messes up the BD cases uniformity.

And DVD's are just a distraction to bluray's growth.

It's the same price. I really don't understand the problem. You just get an extra disc. No one's forcing you to watch it.

I don't see the problem either. Having an extra disc slot with a DVD affects nothing to me. The sticker that mentions that a DVD is included is removable. So on the outside it will look exactly like any other Criterion BD I own.

I'll be picking up Tokyo Story and City Lights. I'd like to do a blind buy on the box set, but it's a little too much for that.

As for the combo packs, for me it's a waste, but there are a lot of people that want to watch them on their PC or laptop that don't have BD drives. So I get it. I don't throw mine away, but it's not going to keep me from getting the release. Heck, the DVDs may end up as gifts for friends and family. Get them hooked on CC discs.

One possible perk about including a DVD is it might allow Criterion to include more special features that couldn't fit on the BD, and they wouldn't otherwise include if not for the availability of the other disc. Several studios that put out BD/DVD sets have done similar things, and I look at it as a positive in that respect.

Just out of curiousity, can you explain the benefit of throwing DVDs in the trash as opposed to selling them or just letting them sit in the case on the shelf?

I agree. If they jacked up the price $10.00 I would complain. But it is what they are charging already for a stand alone Blu ray. I can see why they are doing this, financially it is cheaper for them to release only one SKU.

I don't get that either. I'd be more bothered about having that empty space where the DVD 'used to be'.

I hope they don't do the separate tray packaging because a lot of times the plastic breaks. Hopefully they will do the stacked format with the blu ray on top.

Yep, financially it makes a lot of sense. Also, the complaint that dual format releases prevents the spread of BD doesn't make sense to me. If anything, people who used to only buy DVDs now will begin to own blu copies of films, which will add incentive to finally buy a blu-ray player.

Some people have no sense.

I'm looking forward to the DF editions.

[Show spoiler]Fallen Angels -- A Showtime series from the early 90s adapting hardboiled stories by the likes of Chandler, Woolrich, Thompson, Hammett, Goodis, et alia. Among the episode directors were Steven Soderbergh, Alfonso Cuarón, and Peter Bogdanovich. Never released on DVD.

Philip Marlowe, Private Eye -- An HBO series from the early 80s, with Powers Boothe as Marlowe. All episodes were adaptations of Chandler stories. Released on DVD, but of so-so quality.

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, and Further Tales of the City. Released on DVD from three different companies (one min-series apiece).

Kieslowski's The Decalogue

Von Trier's The Kingdom and The Kingdom II

On the Air -- Lynch & Frost's demented sitcom follow-up to Twin Peaks, behind-the-scenes at a comedy/variety TV show in the 50s. Never released on DVD, but I have a Japanese LD of all seven episodes.

And many more.
I think another great one would be Rectify, which aired earlier this summer on the Sundance Channel. Only six episodes in season 1, and it was just fantastic. Very unusual but emotionally powerful. Way better than Top of the Lake, which is insanely overrated IMO (and I resent the comparisons to Twin Peaks, one of the best shows ever period)!

I don't see the point in the uproar over dual format. The prices are unaffected and it's a great way to bring interest to Blu-Ray.

Top of the Lake was very solid, but Rectify was extraordinary. So much of the best talent today is working on TV, not features.

Rectify was also only released on DVD, which is a crazy, crying shame.

Solid announcement. City Lights and Tokyo Story could've been announced by themselves. Looks like a few holdouts were correct about Frances Ha - though maybe it could have been a clue for the both titles? I'm still holding out hope that the New Years' clue now widely interpreted as for Zatoichi could also double for Le Samourai, for example...but Criterion could, and should, take their time to either produce or procure another transfer for that title. They'd be smart not to let another Children of Paradise or Madame de... debacle happen again.

It's gotta be coming. Of course I have no confirmation of this, but (especially) if you follow the order of recent titles with recent restorations released in both France (Gaumont) and the UK (BFI usu, though MoC as well), you can pretty much chalk it up.

Perhaps they're looking to produce unique extras, like a new Polanski interview or something? Though they could license a few of the Gaumont features that did not appear on the BFI disc.

The BFI in particular does this with their discs, to note a producer of the same like as Criterion.

I don't really see the fuss over the dual-format releases, especially since they're the same price. If anything I'm more apt to lend that to a friend than a blu, and it provides an easy redundancy for your collection.

They might put that one in a "digipak".

We'll soon find out.
