I'm just playing
![]() I don't hate Life Aquatic, I just thought it was way too indulgent. After a while the artifice became the point, leaving it with a hollowed out, inert core. It'll still be interesting to see in HD, because there are some pretty impressive sights there. |

We really need a thread devoted to the films.

DVD Beaver's review of Bergman's Autumn Sonata. I'm really excited about this release. The screenshot comparisons literally look like night and day, particularly the first one.

That said, it's still my favorite Wes. It had the nicest blend between strong character and quirk IMO. |

Perhaps this has been stated previously, or perhaps Criterion has yet to say, but do we know the style of packaging for the dual format releases? They look to be larger DVD style cases which I hope is not the case since I've enjoyed converting my Criterions one by one to the blu-rays. And I doubt all editions will be G1 size digipacks, especially for the smaller films.
Either way, the announcement of Tokyo Story is incredibly exciting as I've purposely held off on the BFI edition for a restoration. And no doubt, Chaplin's City Lights is one of my 5 most anticipated blu-rays. |

The Blu ray transfer does look stunning but it does not have the 'autumn' tone like it did before. Looks like the hazy tone was scrubbed out; kind of like what was done to Do the Right Thing when it went from Criterion DVD to Universal Blu ray.

Wow, I just looked at the screenshots and the difference is pretty startling. I have no idea what the original looked like, but I agree that the DVD looks more autumnal, and even matches the tone of the cover. The BD does look more accurate in terms of real-life colors, while the DVD has the whole movie tinted in reddish/orange, but the BD presentation just gives me a "cold" feeling. Again, I don't know what's more accurate, but I think I prefer the color timing of the DVD. Aside from the color, the image quality looks quite good, lots of detail, a fine grain texture.

I marinated on this for a couple of hours, and decided to take a leap of faith. I just ordered this for $24.20 US dollars, including shipping, from the French Amazon website. I'll brown-bag my lunches for a week after going over my pre-planned budget after yesterday's haul. ![]() What prompted my decision, aside from this being my all-time favorite movie? Here's a Caps-A-Holic comparison of the existing Criterion DVD vs. the Pathe Blu-ray Looks like there's a lot of manipulation by digital elves/filtering/whatever, but it's a clear picture by comparison that might look fine on my modest-sized television. No English subtitles, but I can pretty much quote the subtitles from memory anyway from my Criterion DVD that I will continue to hold on to. I ordered the Amaray pressing instead of the digibook, since this site confirms that the Amaray one is Region A playable. I'll let y'all know my findings. Chances are likely that I'll end up swallowing my pride and admitting that this was a reckless buy, but it's my all-time favorite, so it's worth a shot. Does anyone know if the Dual Format change has anything to do with falling sales?
I think that may be why. Either that, or The Criterion Collection is trying to phase out DVDs by getting people to get the dual format editions. Personally, I hope that the casing is the same as it is for Blu-rays. They should put them in something like the Brazil release with two caps for the Blu-rays on the one side. The November announcement was very disappointing by the way. |
