Sad choice of film to learn such a lesson from.

And, as for learning their lesson, the recent release of The Earring of Madame de... shows Criterion still have QC issues.

I hope you enjoy it.

Act 3 is definitely the best. I could take or leave the first two.

A couple of comments / questions:

- Just to temper people's disappointment now, there is now way Criterion will be releasing films from Cronenberg and Lynch next month since they both dabble in the same type of dark cinema and the films most rumored (Eraserheard and Scanners/The Brood). That said, I have to think we can expect something next month due to the new year's clues

- On that, considering we have one month left of the year, does anyone know what was left in the illustration that has not been announced or released yet? From memory, I think we are still missing

- Scanners
- Eraserhead
- The Tenet (or whatever film represented the Builiding in the illustration)
- Le Samurai

Is this it?

What does everyone think of Criterion using Blu-ray/DVD combo packs now? I think that it's a great idea, and gives just a little extra value to each release.

There's also the clue that could be either Nagisa Oshima's Boy or Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows

In fact, there are several instances in which selected extras appear only on the DVD edition (or only on the BD edition). The most notable one being The Last Emperor: the DVD edition has the extended TV version, interviews with Ferdinando Scarfiotti & Ying Ruocheng, a reminisence by Bernardo Bertolucci, and essay & production-diary extracts by Fabien S. Gerard, none of which were included with the BD edition.

Well, even if the DVD is on the top, you can swap them around yourself.

There you go. I never knew that about the TLE release either. Kind of makes me hope they go back and re-release it in a dual format edition now.

It's not really that people don't understand. It's that they think it's silly.

So donate them to a local library. Even if, for whatever reason, they can't use them, they can try selling them at their next library sale. For that matter, you can also donate them to Goodwill or The Salvation Army, and let them sell them.

Not only do I still watch DVDs on my HDTV, I also still watch laserdiscs. Why? Because I have films or TV series in those formats that haven't been released on Blu-ray (and in some cases may never be). I'll be damned if I'm not going to ever watch The Wire again, simply because HBO hasn't seen fit to release it on Blu-ray. Hell, I have a shelf full of LDs of movies that haven't even been released on DVD, let alone Blu-ray.

Noticing that Criterion has TOUKI BOUKI offered on Hulu Plus has me hoping we'll see that wildly creative, psychedelic Senegalese film on blu in the next year. It's that rare African film that might appeal to fans of Jodorowsky as much as it does fans of Sembene. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touki_Bouki

It's Hulu availability coupled with this new documentary about the film by his niece playing festivals makes me think the timing would be ideal for TOUKI BOUKI on BD w/ the doc as a bonus feature: http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowand...fest-marseille

Preach it! But seriously, I'm the same way. I have LDs and DVDs of stuff that isn't on blu. And i play the DVDs on my DVD player I still have since it's region free. I have hundreds of DVDs i still don't have on blu because they aren't released or b/c i don't have thousands of $$$ to upgrade them all. Just silly, IMHO, to get rid of all your DVDs b/c you have a HDTV now. They can still look better on the TV upscaled. just my opinion though.

I can't wait to see it. Dr. Svet's review really makes it sound interesting.

Also, how can I own Be Kind and Rewind and Green Hornet but not Tokyo!? I had to fix that.

Boogie Nights? El Cid? The Return of Martin Guere? Darling? Zulu? Jour de fête? Damage, She's Gotta Have It? Shraeder's Cat People? Dersu Uzala? Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?? Montenegro? League of Gentlemen? Or their four forgotten-about Hitchcocks (Sabotage, Secret Agent, Young and Innocent and Blackmail)?

or all of them? But sex, lies, and videotape, El Cid, Boogie Nights, Crash, The Fisher King, and any of the Hitchcocks would be great!

I'm probably in a minority on this, but I was not at all impressed by this film. I tried both versions included with the DVD, and didn't find the director's cut any better than the theatrical cut.

Yeah, Green Hornet is terrible, but Be Kind has a good share of great visual moments.

I haven't seen Science of Sleep yet, though. Ive heard great things about that one.

Just do what I do, which is set it so that any sponsored posts like the Amazon one are only visible to me. I have redeemed a bunch of deals this way, and no one else will ever see them.
