And I'm sure many of us remember the years it took for the Salo reissue to come out after they announced they got the rights back to it. 3 years I think. And how many of us are still awaiting the Andrei Rublev reissue (im sure it will be blu now) that they told us was coming in the beginning of 09.

Is there a possibility the following titles may be released by Criterion on blu-ray?

Anything Hitchcock
Anything Orson Welles
Sunrise
Bicycle Thieves
L'Avventura
Jules et Jim

The Borders Rewards coupon going around for those that are members...the 40% off dvd or blu box sets.....well I found out it works on criterion titles as well!!!!

The coupon ends 4/15

http://www.dealigg.com/story-Borders...-Code-Discount

I just ordered Empire of Passion and Fallen Angels blu for $35

Im not sure if it works on all non criteron blus, but I think it works on all criterion titles.

Hope some people take advantage of this, if you cant wait for the next CC sale or B&N heres your chance to get two titles for 40% off

Sunrise
You can pick up the amazing Masters Of Cinema blu-ray of "Sunrise" from Amazon UK or directly from Eureka right now in their April sale. It's region-free, so there's no reason that everyone shouldn't own it.

Read this out of context and thought some clue had been dropped about The Color Trilogy.

Ah well.

I'd say all of those are possibilities, though to differing degrees.

Likely Hitchcock titles would be The Lady Vanishes or The 39 Steps, which are the only two they still have rights to. They also have Foreign Correspondent in the pipeline.

As for Welles. I could see Mr. Arkadin eventually making it. F for Fake seems like a lesser chance. Reportedly there's a chance they'll be releasing Othello (or is it MacBeth?).

Sunrise is a Fox property in the US. Fox released their own DVD of it, but with the pretty good relationship between Fox and Criterion right now it wouldn't be all that surprising to see Criterion license it from them. However, if you want it soon the European Blu is a great option.

My guesses for the July releases (presumably TBA tomorrow/Friday):

Following (DVD + BLU)
The Red Shoes (DVD + BLU)
M. Hulot's Holiday (BLU)
The Four Feathers (1939) (DVD)

Mikio Naruse (Eclipse)

And my surprise pick of the month that is probably 99% unlikely to happen:

Night of the Hunter (DVD + BLU)

its Othello....and I hope CC give the blu treatment to Hamlet, Henry V, Richard III...in fact, the collection needs more Shakespeare in general. Much Ado About Nothing!!!!

I issued my picks a dozen or so pages back so I'll repost them here:

M. Hulot’s Holiday
The Four Feathers (DVD only)
The French Lieutenant’s Woman
The Red Shoes
The Secret of the Grain

LOl I wish... but since they already had the rights and released it years ago, then lost them back to MGM, what are the chances of getting them again, especially in MGM's current state? I used to play my Criterion Night of the Hunter laserdisc all the time.

I'm pretty sure they picked it up again in the latest MGM deal, which also included:

The Fugitive Kind
Paths of Glory
The Killing

And possibly the following:

Kiss Me Deadly
Red River
The Black Stallion
The Misfits

Specifically, a Facebook response in Sep '09 for Night of the Hunter was "it’s high on our list, but not 100% sure thing yet".

Sweet! Kubrick's Paths of Glory and The Killing as well... hadn't heard the news. On a semi-unrelated note, wish they'd get a hold of Barry Lyndon...

I'm pretty confident that Warner will get around to Barry Lyndon and Lolita eventually.

my local bestbuy had Vivre Sa Vi and Summer Hours on shelfs days before their street day. A couple of weeks ago I was a few movies behind with the criterion blu-ray releases now I am 2 titles ahead (I am only missing Howards End and Monterey Complete Pop Festival)

I dont know much about Summer Hours but I have wanted to see My Life to Live for a long time.

I started importing movies a couple of weeks ago. I already ordered/recieved about 13 titles from UK, Aus, Ca, Tr. Could someone help me with a list of Independent, Foreign(to USA), Art-House titles which mostlikely will not make it US edition Blu-Ray or Import version is superior?

Australia

American Psycho--Region-free with HD extras. BD-50 AVC with TrueHD 5.1 vs. BD-25 MPEG-2 DTS-ES (lossy) 6.1 on Lionsgate U.S. edition

not arthouse but,

Casino Royale--Entirely uncut (cut differently in UK and in USA) with English-language packaging. The Deluxe Edition seems OOP over there though.

UK

Let the Right One In--Region AB at least, correct subtitles, fixed DTS-HD MA error (and they will exchange if you get a defective copy) UK exclusive English audio commentary by the director and author of the book. HD video extras and PAL photo gallery.

Hidden (Cache)--Region-free, though it could show up in the USA at some point from Sony. PAL extras.

The Double Life of Veronique--Region-free with HD extras. Criterion used a print with different color filters, so this gives a different presentation of the film visually

The Italian Job (1969)--Region-free, HD and NTSC extras

Belle de jour--Region B with PAL extras, may show up from Criterion at some point but probably with some different extras.

BFI

Salo--Region B with HD extras (and PAL extras on separate DVD)--the BFI print contains a short sequence during the wedding (a poem reading) not found on either Criterion edition.

Any of the BFI Flipside titles, as the Blu-ray are entirely HD with no PAL content.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning--Region B with HD extras. A 1960 British "kitchen sink"-esque film about the English lower-class with a brilliant performance by Albert Finney.

France

Le Casanova de Fellini (Il Casanova di Fellini)--Region B, only French subs but has English LPCM 2.0 (and French and Italian LPCM 2.0 tracks as well) with Donald Sutherland's voice. Awesome hardbook packaging.

One + One / Sympathy for the Devil--Region B. English-language documentary by Jean-Luc Godard about The Rolling Stones (ostensibly). Contains two different cuts of the film. Also has some English audio extras that may be PAL (I forget). Same awesome hardbook case packaging.

"Summer Hours" is a beautiful, well-acted film. If you enjoy Jean Renoir films or films that use a setting and utilizes the beauty of nature around it, the cinematography for the film is just beautiful to watch. A very delightful film worthy of having in the collection but for those who want replay value, not sure if some will find it a film they would want to see several times.

Last, for those who owned "Armageddon" via the Criterion DVD release, I just want to say the upcoming Blu-ray release from Disney will definitely impress people via PQ esp. the lossless AQ but hang on to your Criterion version for the special features (the BD only has the Aerosmith music video and trailers).

will the new one be the directors cut like the CC is? I know its only like 2 extra minutes and I have no intention of buying the blu (just stick with my criterion) im just curious.

kndy, everyone knows the reason the Criterion DVD is irreplaceable is because the menu contains a snippet of Bruce Willis singing "YMCA" in a spacesuit.

Case in point: I haven't watched my copy in at least five years and I still remember that.

Also, I just remembered that the version on the CC DVD is slightly naughtier than the PG-13 version (more than one "f***" as I remember is the reason ).
