Has anybody ever used the intro shot of Lost in Translation as an avatar? I would be surprised if that has never been an avatar before.
I think that intro shot (Scarlett Johanssen's ass) would make for an effective avatar, but for some reason I like space and distance and to me, the timeless shots in the film are the ones where she is sitting at the large hotel room window looking out into the streets of Tokyo. So much can be thought of from those shots that cannot be thought of just by an image of a woman's ass.

By the way, thanks Great Owl for preferring mine.

MGM's initial batch of DVD's had incorrect AR issues, but they recalled them from stores and completely fixed the issues and had an exchange program for those who'd already bought the erroneous discs. The set is fantastic - great films (except maybe Serpent's Egg, which was kinda meh for me) with great transfers and great extras. It was a Criterion-quality release!

How long does it usually take to get a response from Mulvaney @ Criterion, in regards to the problematic disc 2 of Carlos? I e-mailed on 8/14, and I thought I would have heard back by now.

I'm hard pressed to come up with one. There are a lot of great Scores, like Star Wars and Robin Hood: Prince of Theives, but not that many "soundtracks." Pulp Ficiton comes to mind, some great R&B moments, Tommy of course, but there aren't many.

Now that's a great list... jealous. I keep wantingb to teach a film course, but we already have 2 professors who teach courses. One is a Film Lit course and the other a Pop Culture course.

Out of Sight is a close second. I have yet to see my BluRay copy, though. I'm sure it will impress.

That's a great list of films.

I'm taking an Intro to Film course this semester as an elective. The remaining courses that I need for my major (Criminology and Criminal Justice) are not offered or are full and the professors won't give me a permission number (even though I'm a senior, so it looks like I'll be going a 5th year).

so an actual Criterion question here... lol. I just noticed about 18 of the Zatoichi films are on Hulu to watch for free (with ads). I've really never seen any of the films, and not super familar with Samurai genre. My question is, what should I expect? I'm really thinking I'm going to sit down over the next few weeks and watch as many as I can... along with the 8 freebies from the WCF collection during "Criterion's 101 Days of Summer." I really loved The Housemaid, and can't wait to watch the others.

Hope you have fun, Scott. I'll be looking into film schools this fall/winter myself. I expect to graduate from Engineering this December.

Loving this two month Hulu Plus free trial. I've put 88 CC titles on my wishlist so far. I wonder if I can get through them all? :P

I just wish there were a way to import imdb ratings or something to hide films I've already seen.

I watched the first one last night and it was excellent. I'm only a beginner really at the Samurai genre (seen a fair number of Kobayashis, all the Kurosawas I can get my hands on etc) but Zatoichi was similar in my mind to Yojimbo more than the Samurai Trilogy (which I honestly disliked). I'd definitely suggest watching the first just to make sure you like it, but I'm going to hold off on the rest and enjoy them fresh on Blu. Also want to avoid the absolutely ludicrous amount of commercials Hulu forces you to endure on the free watches.
