Such a shame that Criterion had been touting the WCF films, yet only make them available on Hulu, while MOC waits until announcement day to say they are the UK partners and are releasing the films in November. I doubt Criterion would even release all 8 at once. So this time next year MOC will have all 8 releases Criterion has touted, along with one more. Perhaps A Brighter Summer's Days? And since they will be the same sources, I highly doubt there will be much discrepancy between each company's releases.
I guess Criterion is too busy with releases like Frances Ha to start unloading these films. |

Don't get me wrong, I love Eureka. They do great stuff. Their booklets are great and I haven't been disappointed with a transfer yet. But it's not a completely apples-apples comparison. |

The other truth is, Frances Ha will probably sell more copies because it's a newer film. And Criterion is still in the business of making profit. They space out the more obscure releases and match them with more "mainstream" titles to keep a balance. |

MoC occasionally creates/commissions their own supplements. They've had introductions/discussions with Tony Rayns, Alex Cox, Simon Callow and others (the WCF set boasts exclusive introductions by Scorsese) and also some commentaries.

I had given 12 Monkeys a second try, when it came out on DVD, and still didn't care for it. Part of the problem was that it took Gilliam over 2 hours to tell a story that Chris Marker told with much more inventiveness in only 30 minutes. And Brad Pitt's acclaimed performance was little more than a channeling of Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now.

For years it seemed like Brazil was one of those releases that was beyond reproach, so now when I see so much negativity it just seems like it is due for some backlash. All just part of the normal life cycle.

![]() The BD was a blind buy for me (I hadn't been actively avoiding it but I'd never gotten around to it either) and I'm very glad I bought it and can see how somebody might really love it but I can also understand reactions along the lines of 'so what's all the fuss been about, exactly'. After one viewing I'm sort of in the middle but I'll definitely be going back to it at some point. |

Since a major focus of my cinematic interests was Hollywood's studio system era, my LDs and DVDs of those films were ordered by studio, and chronologically within each studio grouping. Post-1970 films were filed alphabetically by title (series were grouped together with the series or character name serving as the "title"). Foreign-language films were filed by country, and then by title. The work of certain favorite directors was filed separately. Criterions were also filed separately, in numerical order. When I moved in with my then-girlfriend/now-wife, I had to re-file in a way that would be more convenient to her, because my collection was so large, and we interfiled our two collections, so everything was mostly in a straight alphabetical-by-title order. With my Blu-rays, I have six major groupings: Criterion, foreign-language, animation, series, non-series films, TV. Generally speaking, within each group, I file them as I used to when I lived alone. The Blu-ray collection is still relatively small enough that the arcance system isn't as much of a problem for my wife, and she rarely watches movies on her own anyway. |
